To keep an OBS YouTube livestream from replaying its opening video immediately when the playlist wraps, use an OBS VLC Video source with Loop Playlist enabled, then arrange and check the playlist so its last item differs from its first. Shuffle can vary the order, but the available OBS documentation does not guarantee that it will prevent a repeat at the loop boundary.
First, distinguish a YouTube playlist from a livestream playlist
YouTube’s playlist repeat control applies to a person watching a playlist in YouTube’s player. YouTube Help says, “The playlist will repeat continuously,” but this controls viewer playback—not the sequence an encoder sends as a live broadcast (YouTube Help, accessed October 3, 2026).
For a live broadcast built from multiple local media files, the sequence is controlled by the streaming software. In OBS Studio, use a VLC Video source for the playlist and configure its loop and ordering behavior.
Set up a looping playlist in OBS
- Add the playlist source. In the scene that will carry the videos, select Sources → + → VLC Video. Give the source a recognizable name.
- Add the media files. In the source properties, add the video files in the order you want them to play. The regular Media Source is intended for individual media playback; VLC Video is the playlist-style source described in OBS guidance (iTechGuides, published October 3, 2026).
- Enable continuous playback. Turn on Loop Playlist so playback returns to the start after the final item.
- Choose whether to shuffle. Turn on Shuffle only if you want the item order to vary. OBS’s interface includes both controls, but their presence alone does not establish a no-repeat guarantee at the wrap point (OBS Studio source-interface labels, accessed October 3, 2026).
- Check what happens when the source is hidden. If you switch scenes while the broadcast continues, review the source’s visibility behavior options. OBS exposes controls for stopping or restarting, pausing or unpausing, and always playing. The available labels do not establish the default setting for every OBS version, so check the selected option in your installation.
Prevent the opening video from immediately repeating
Looping repeats the list; it does not by itself guarantee that the final video and the opening video will be different. Shuffle changes order, but OBS community discussions include user reports that shuffled ordering may not reshuffle at every cycle. Treat those as reports, not an official guarantee (OBS Project Forums: “VLC Playlist Shuffle”).

When that end-to-start repeat matters, control the transition directly:
- Decide which video should open the broadcast.
- Arrange the playlist so a different video is last.
- Review the sequence from the last item back to the opening item. Confirm that the two are not the same.
- If you enable Shuffle, do not assume your manually chosen boundary will remain intact. Check the actual order and accept that the boundary may vary unless you control it.
This method guarantees a different final and opening item only for the specific sequence you have checked. If the order changes, check the boundary again.

Which approach should you use?
| Approach | Playback layer controlled | Loops? | Guarantees a different last and first item? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube player repeat | Viewer playback of a YouTube playlist | Yes, for viewer playback; YouTube Help says the playlist repeats continuously. | No. It does not control the outgoing live encoder sequence. | Repeating a playlist for someone watching in YouTube’s player. |
| OBS VLC Video with Loop Playlist | The media sequence sent from OBS | Yes, when enabled. | No, not by itself. | Continuously playing multiple media files in a livestream. |
| OBS VLC Video with Shuffle | The order of playlist items sent from OBS | It can be combined with looping. | No documented guarantee located; forum comments are user reports. | Varying playback order when an occasional repeat at the boundary is acceptable. |
| Manually arranged sequence | The order of playlist items sent from OBS | Yes, when combined with Loop Playlist. | Yes for the sequence checked, provided the last item differs from the first and you preserve that order. | A controlled end-to-start transition. |
Optional: refresh the playlist to reshuffle
An OBS forum reply describes using the Directory Watch Media plugin’s refresh action to reshuffle a VLC playlist (OBS Project Forums: “How does VLC video source shuffle work?”). This is community guidance, not a built-in guarantee. Before relying on it, check the plugin’s current instructions and compatibility with your OBS version, then verify the resulting playlist order. You do not need a plugin to loop a playlist or to arrange a different final and opening item.
