To play several clips in one OBS scene, add them to an OBS VLC Video Source playlist and enable looping if you want it to repeat. To change layouts automatically as clips end or on a schedule, use Advanced Scene Switcher macros: Scene Collections organize scenes and sources, but do not schedule their rotation.
Choose the kind of rotation you need
| Goal | Use | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Play several local clips in the same layout | VLC Video Source playlist | Plays a list of media items, with loop and shuffle controls. It does not give each clip a different scene layout. |
| Switch scenes after media events or at set times | Advanced Scene Switcher macros | Runs actions when configured conditions are met; a macro can switch scenes. |
| Save or reuse sets of scenes and sources | Scene Collections | Organizes production layouts. It is not an automation scheduler. |
OBS describes Scene Collections as saving the scenes and sources added to them (OBS Scene Collections). Output settings are managed separately in OBS Profiles (OBS Profiles).
Play a playlist of clips in one scene
- Create or select a scene. In OBS, choose the scene that should remain on screen while clips play.
- Add a VLC Video Source. In the Sources panel, select +, choose VLC Video Source, and create or select the source. Add the local media files to its playlist. OBS describes VLC Video Source as similar to Media Source, but able to hold a list of media items (OBS Media Sources).
- Choose how the playlist behaves. Enable Loop Playlist to repeat it. Enable Shuffle Playlist only if you want randomized playback. OBS lists looping as on and shuffling as off by default.
- Check VLC compatibility. VLC must be installed. OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Test playback and audio. Confirm the order, transitions, audio levels, and what happens when playback reaches the end of the list before you connect a live broadcast.
Switch between scenes automatically
Build the scenes first
Create a separate scene for each layout or segment you want viewers to see. A Scene Collection can keep those scenes and sources together, but it will not switch between them automatically.
Set up an Advanced Scene Switcher macro
- Check compatibility before installing. The OBS forum listing for Advanced Scene Switcher reports version 1.36.1, updated 2026-08-07, a minimum OBS Studio version of 31.1.1, and Windows, macOS, and Linux support. Confirm that the plugin version is compatible with your installed OBS version before using it (Advanced Scene Switcher listing).
- Create a macro. In the plugin, add a condition that matches your intended trigger, such as a media state or a timing condition, and an action that switches to the target scene. The exact configuration depends on your sources and scene design.
- Check media visibility behavior. If a scene’s visibility setting affects whether its media pauses or resumes, make sure the behavior fits your sequence. Otherwise, returning to a scene may unexpectedly restart or stop playback.
- Test every transition. Run the sequence through clip completion, scene changes, and the end of the playlist. A community forum example shows one possible media-state-based configuration, but it is illustrative rather than a universal recipe (OBS forum example).
Use a VLC playlist when all clips share one layout; use macros when scene changes need to follow media events or timing. Combining a playlist with macros is possible, but requires testing the interaction between your sources, visibility settings, and triggers.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live and test the stream
OBS sends its program output to YouTube as an encoder stream. Scene automation changes what OBS outputs; it does not create, schedule, or start the YouTube broadcast for you. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup flow, then configure OBS with the stream URL and stream key provided in YouTube Live Control Room (YouTube: Go live with an encoder).
- Set up the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room and retrieve the encoder stream URL and stream key.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select the applicable YouTube connection option, and enter or connect the stream details using YouTube’s current workflow.
- Start with a private or otherwise appropriate test broadcast, then verify that YouTube receives the picture and sound and that the intended playlist or scene sequence plays correctly.
- Test a full pass, including audio, transition timing, loop or shuffle behavior, end-of-list behavior, stream connection, and what happens if a clip fails. OBS recommends testing settings and running a short test stream before a first live broadcast (OBS Quick Start Guide).
Troubleshoot common rotation problems
- VLC Video Source is missing or shows no video: Confirm VLC is installed and its architecture matches OBS. For 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC, then restart OBS and check the source again.
- The playlist stops after the last clip: Check that Loop Playlist is enabled if continuous repetition is intended. The default is on, but confirm the source setting.
- Clips play in an unexpected order: Turn off Shuffle Playlist for a fixed sequence; OBS lists shuffle as off by default.
- OBS does not change scenes: Confirm the macro is enabled, its condition can detect the intended media or timing state, and its action points to the desired scene. Verify plugin compatibility with your installed OBS version.
- A returning scene restarts or stops its media: Review the scene’s media visibility behavior and test leaving and re-entering it.
- YouTube receives no stream: Recheck the selected YouTube encoder workflow, stream URL, and stream key. Scene switching alone does not start or reconnect the broadcast.
- A transition works locally but not as expected on air: Run a complete test stream and observe the YouTube output, not just the OBS preview. Check video, audio, timing, and the playlist’s end behavior.
