Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Use OBS Studio’s VLC Video source to play sermon recordings in order and loop them into YouTube Live. Add the files to a playlist, enable looping, connect OBS to a YouTube stream key, and keep the computer and internet connection running. For a saved YouTube replay, plan each broadcast to end before it reaches 12 hours; longer streams may not be archived.
What you need
- A computer that can run OBS Studio and VLC. VLC must be installed, and its 32-bit or 64-bit architecture must match OBS.
- The sermon recordings stored somewhere the computer can access throughout the broadcast.
- A YouTube channel with access to create an encoder-based live stream in YouTube Studio.
- A stable internet connection with upload capacity above the stream’s bitrate. YouTube recommends keeping about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom.
OBS is a practical starting point if you already have a suitable computer. Its VLC Video source plays a sequence of media files and can restart the playlist when it runs out. For one recording that should repeat, use OBS’s Media Source and enable its Loop option instead. OBS lists formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, MP3, AAC, and WAV. OBS: Media Sources
Set up the rotating playlist in OBS
- Install OBS and VLC. Match VLC’s architecture to OBS (both 64-bit or both 32-bit), or the VLC Video source may not work.
- Create a scene. In OBS, select or create a scene for the broadcast. Add any visual elements you need, such as a church logo or a background, while ensuring they do not obscure the sermon video.
- Add a VLC Video source. In the Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video. Name the source and confirm.
- Add recordings in playback order. In the source’s playlist settings, add each sermon file and arrange the list in the order you want viewers to hear them. Use local files or another location that will remain accessible to OBS.
- Keep Loop Playlist enabled. This makes the source restart after it reaches the end of the media list. OBS documents this setting as controlling whether the source restarts when it has run out of media files; it is on by default. OBS: Media Sources
- Check video and audio. Preview the scene and confirm the picture fits the frame, audio is audible without clipping, the first sermon starts where intended, and the end of each file moves cleanly to the next. Remove unintended black frames, silence, or slate screens by editing the files or adjusting the playlist before going live.
For a single sermon rather than a rotation, add an OBS Media Source, select the file, and turn on Loop. Do not add multiple Media Sources expecting them to form a playlist; use VLC Video for the ordered list.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Create or schedule an encoder stream in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio, choose Create > Go live, and create or schedule a stream using an encoder. The labels or layout can vary as YouTube updates Studio.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. In YouTube’s Live Control Room, copy the server URL and key provided for the stream.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. Open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service if available, then paste the stream key. If OBS asks for a server, use the stream URL shown in Live Control Room. Keep the key private: anyone with it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Start the OBS stream and inspect YouTube’s preview. Select Start Streaming in OBS. Wait for the feed to appear in Live Control Room, then check picture, sound, and stream status before selecting the YouTube control to go live.
- Monitor the broadcast. Keep OBS running, keep the computer awake, and make sure the playlist files remain available. Watch YouTube’s stream health and audio/video quality during the broadcast. YouTube’s event guidance recommends starting an encoder at least 15 minutes before an event and checking the preview. Plan the broadcast length and archive
YouTube says encoder streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If viewers need a YouTube replay, end the stream before it passes 12 hours, then start a new scheduled broadcast. Consider recording locally as a backup and confirm that the local recording file is growing while you stream. YouTube: Archive live streams

Check copyright and monetization before you broadcast
Confirm rights to every element
Make sure your church has permission to stream each sermon and every embedded element, including music, performances, photographs, and video clips. YouTube scans live streams for third-party copyrighted material. A match can lead to a placeholder replacing the stream, interruption or termination, or a claim on the archived video. A license may not prevent a live interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID.

YouTube’s livestream terms state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world.” Read the YouTube Terms of Service and confirm rights before scheduling the broadcast.
Understand the monetization limits
If the channel is monetized, YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams. YouTube says content should be original and authentic; repetitive or mass-produced programming may be ineligible. Permission to rebroadcast a recording does not, on its own, establish that the channel meets monetization requirements. YouTube channel monetization policies

Troubleshoot common problems
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video is missing or does not play files | VLC is not installed, or its 32/64-bit architecture does not match OBS. | Install the VLC version matching OBS, then reopen OBS and check the source again. |
| The playlist stops after the last sermon | Loop Playlist is disabled or the source is not configured as a VLC playlist. | Open the VLC Video source properties, verify the playlist contains the expected files, and enable Loop Playlist. |
| A sermon is skipped or goes black | A file path is unavailable, the file cannot be read, or a recording contains black frames. | Check that the file opens locally, confirm its path has not changed, and preview each playlist item before going live. |
| YouTube does not receive the OBS feed | The stream key or server URL is incorrect, the encoder has not started, or the network is blocking the connection. | Copy the current URL and key from the correct Live Control Room stream into OBS, select Start Streaming, and check the YouTube preview and stream health. |
| Video or audio quality fluctuates | Available upload capacity may be too close to the stream bitrate, or the computer/network may be under strain. | Check YouTube’s stream health, reduce the encoder bitrate if needed, and preserve roughly 20% upload headroom above that bitrate. Monitor the stream rather than assuming the initial preview guarantees a stable broadcast. |
| The replay is missing or viewers cannot rewind far back | The stream ran beyond YouTube’s 12-hour archive or DVR limits. | For a replay and DVR, schedule broadcasts that end before 12 hours, then start a new stream. Keep a local recording as a backup. |
| The live stream is interrupted or replaced by a placeholder | YouTube may have detected third-party copyrighted material, or there may be another stream issue. | Review all audio and visual elements for rights, check the Live Control Room notices, and resolve the relevant rights issue before restarting. |
Other ways to keep sermons streaming
If operating a local encoder is not a good fit, the main alternatives are a hosted cloud service or a dedicated encoder appliance. Compare where playback runs, what recovery support exists, how archives are handled, and whether the solution’s present-day features and costs suit your church. YouTube’s verified encoder list names the AJA HELO Plus, an H.264 hardware encoder with optional PlayToStream functionality for scheduled prerecorded media streamed directly to YouTube Live without a computer. It also lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming. Listing in YouTube’s directory is not an endorsement; confirm current features, compatibility, availability, playlist controls, pricing, and rights workflow with the provider.
