Use OBS Studio’s built-in Image Source in slideshow mode to rotate devotional images during a YouTube mantra live stream. Add the slideshow to the scene carrying your audio, arrange and frame it in the preview, then connect OBS to YouTube Live with the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio.
Before you start: check YouTube Live access
For encoder-based streaming, YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. If this is your first time enabling live streaming, activation can take up to 24 hours, so check access before the day of your program. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and encoder setup instructions.
Make an automatic image slideshow in OBS
- Create or select a scene. In OBS Studio, use the Scenes panel to select an existing scene or create one for the mantra stream. Add the slideshow to the scene that will carry your audio and any other overlays.
- Add the slideshow source. In the Sources panel, select the add (+) control, choose Image Source, and enable its slideshow option. Select the image files you want to rotate. OBS’s Sources Guide describes Image Source as supporting a single image or a slideshow in a scene.
- Frame the images. Select the source and use the canvas preview to position and size it. Fit or crop the source as needed so the important parts of each image remain visible. Check the full sequence: images with different shapes or aspect ratios may not frame identically.
- Layer text and overlays. Add a separate text source for a mantra title, schedule, or other information. In the Sources list, place text above the image source so it appears in front. Use the visibility controls and source order to confirm what viewers will see.
- Check the result. Preview the scene and verify that the image changes and that text remains readable. OBS documents source ordering, sizing, cropping, and visibility in its Sources Guide.
Choose automatic rotation or manual image changes
Automatic slideshow in one scene
Choose the Image Source slideshow when you want an image set to rotate within the same scene without an operator switching scenes for each image.
Manual changes with separate scenes
For deliberate, operator-controlled changes, make a separate scene for each image and use OBS scene transitions. Studio Mode lets you prepare a scene in preview before transitioning it to viewers. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide for scenes, transitions, and Studio Mode.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Create or select your stream in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room and set up the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream details from YouTube Studio. You need the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as private: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Enter them in OBS. Open OBS stream settings and choose the YouTube service if it is available. Otherwise, enter YouTube’s stream URL and stream key as the encoder details.
- Start the encoder feed. Start streaming from OBS, then follow the Live Control Room flow to take the stream live. YouTube’s encoder guide covers the connection and go-live steps.
Decide on horizontal or vertical framing before going live
YouTube documents horizontal (16:9) and vertical (9:16) live formats, including a dual-format route through the Live Control Room. Vertical layout options include center crop, fit to phone width, and stacked. For third-party encoders, YouTube’s documented dual-stream path uses RTMP(S) and a second stream key. Choose the format and check your image and text composition before starting: YouTube says vertical format cannot be added after the stream has begun. See YouTube’s live-streaming format guidance.
- Horizontal: frame the image and text for a 16:9 canvas.
- Vertical: check that the main devotional subject and any text remain visible in a 9:16 layout or selected crop.
- Dual format: confirm the intended layout and encoder setup in Live Control Room before going live; the documented third-party encoder route uses a second stream key.
Preflight the stream
Before the event, test the setup as OBS recommends in its overview guide. In YouTube Studio, confirm the encoder preview appears before taking the stream live.

Use artwork and recordings you have permission to stream
Being devotional, publicly viewable, or easy to download does not by itself establish permission to livestream an image or recording. Check the rights for each artwork and audio recording, including any restrictions on public performance, redistribution, or monetization. YouTube’s streaming setup instructions explain the technical connection, not whether particular content is cleared for use.
