If Windows 11 offers Go back, use it promptly to return to the previous Windows installation: open Settings > System > Recovery, back up important files, select Go back, and follow the prompts. The option is usually available for 10 days after an upgrade and depends on the rollback files still being present. This restores the earlier installation, but it does not remove the PC from the Windows Insider Program. Stopping future preview builds is a separate step.

First decide what you want to change

“Roll back” can mean returning to the Windows installation that was on the PC before an upgrade, stopping future Insider previews, or recovering a PC after the built-in rollback option has expired. These are different actions, with different effects on files and apps.

Goal Best-fit route What it does
Return to the previous Windows installation Settings > System > Recovery > Go back, if available Returns to the previous installation and removes apps, drivers, and settings changes made after upgrading. Personal files are normally kept.
Stop future preview builds while already on a production build Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program > Stop getting preview builds Opts out of future preview builds; it does not roll back the current Windows installation.
Leave Insider while still on a preview build Wait for a production build and then opt out, or restore the device using an appropriate recovery image Go back alone will not unenroll the PC. Restoring or reinstalling may remove apps and files, depending on the method.

Before you roll back

Copy important files to a separate, safe location before recovery. Microsoft recommends backing up information you want to keep before restoring or reinstalling Windows. Avoid resetting, refreshing, or reinstalling casually if you still need files from the old installation: those operations can remove the Windows.old contents used by rollback.

  • Check the time window. Microsoft says Go back is available for 10 days in most cases. The previous installation is automatically deleted after 10 days, and deleting it manually also removes the ability to go back. Microsoft: Go back to the previous version of Windows and Microsoft: Delete your previous version of Windows.
  • Keep the rollback files intact. The Windows.old and $windows.~bt folders must remain. Go back can disappear sooner if supporting files are removed.
  • Review account and USB prerequisites. Microsoft’s Go back instructions list removing user accounts created after the upgrade and having the upgrade USB available if one was used.

Use Go back to return to the previous installation

  1. Back up files you cannot afford to lose to another drive or a trusted cloud location.
  2. Open Settings > System > Recovery.
  3. Under Recovery options, look for Go back. If it is present, select it.
  4. Follow the prompts. If asked why you are going back or whether to check for updates first, choose the responses that fit your situation; read each confirmation screen before proceeding.
  5. Allow Windows to restart and complete the rollback. Keep the PC connected to power.

Microsoft says this process keeps personal files, but removes apps and drivers installed after the upgrade and reverses settings changes made since then. Some apps added, removed, or updated after upgrading may be unavailable or may not work properly after the return. Do not assume every application or configuration will be preserved. Stop receiving Insider builds separately

If Windows is already on a production build

Verify that the installed build is a production build, then open Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program > Stop getting preview builds and follow the prompts. Microsoft describes opting out from a production build as a way to stop preview builds without losing information.

If Windows is still on a preview build

Going back to an earlier build does not remove the PC from Insider. Microsoft’s guidance is to wait until a production build is available and opt out then, or restore the device to the operating system it ran when purchased using an appropriate recovery image. Back up wanted data before restoring. The right recovery image can depend on the device; use Microsoft’s recovery guidance or the manufacturer’s support page rather than assuming one image works for every PC. See Microsoft: Leave the Windows Insider Program.

If Go back is missing or expired

A missing Go back option usually means the rollback period has elapsed or the files required for it are no longer available. Other recovery tools may help, but they are not interchangeable ways to restore an earlier Insider build. Choose based on the problem and the data or apps you can afford to lose.

Option What it is for Effect and prerequisites
Uninstall a recent update Undoing a recent Windows update that caused a problem, rather than reverting a feature upgrade to its prior Windows installation Available options and effects depend on the update and device state. Follow Microsoft’s specific instructions before removing an update.
System Restore Returning system settings and files to a restore point to address a recent problem Requires a suitable restore point. Changes made after that point can be lost; this is not the same as rolling Windows back to a previous build.
Reset this PC Reinstalling Windows using reset options when troubleshooting or refreshing the PC Choose the keep-files or remove-everything path deliberately; apps and settings may be removed. Do not use it if you still need rollback files without first safeguarding them.
Recovery image or Windows installation media Recovering or reinstalling when other options fail, or when malware is suspected Results depend on the selected keep-files option and image. A fresh installation can format the drive and remove everything. Manufacturer recovery media may include hardware-specific drivers and factory apps.

Microsoft also describes point-in-time restore on supported Windows versions and configurations. It returns the PC to a restore point, including apps, settings, and files, so changes after that point are lost; it does not simply reinstall the prior Windows build. Availability and behavior vary by version and configuration. For instructions on available recovery choices, see Microsoft: Recovery options in Windows and Microsoft: Reinstall Windows with the installation media.

Consider support status if the previous installation was Windows 10

If Go back would return the PC to Windows 10, factor in that Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. A return may restore the earlier installation, but it does not make that operating system a currently supported long-term destination. Review Microsoft’s support information before choosing it as your endpoint.
