On an openSUSE Leap 15.6 installation using the Transactional Server system role, the documented way to undo root-filesystem changes is transactional-update rollback. First boot into the next-to-last snapshot; to target a particular snapshot, add its ID to the command. This procedure is specific to transactional mode—it is not the standard Snapper rollback workflow for every Leap installation.

Confirm that your installation uses transactional mode

“Immutable mode” here means the Transactional Server system role. The rollback instructions below come from the openSUSE Leap 15.6 release notes; do not assume they apply to a conventional Leap installation or a different release. Confirm your Leap version and installation role before proceeding.

The release notes say to make sure the system is booted into the next-to-last snapshot before running the rollback command. They also direct Transactional Server users to transactional-update for software management rather than YaST or ordinary zypper package-management commands.

Roll back the last transactional update

  1. Restart the computer and boot into the next-to-last snapshot.
  2. Open a terminal and run:
    transactional-update rollback
  3. Reboot and select the resulting default boot entry if needed to start the rolled-back system.

The openSUSE Leap 15.6 release notes describe this as reverting “the last set of changes to the root file system.” It is not a command to selectively undo one package or restore every file on the machine.

Linux Mint 22 (Latest Version) Cinnamon Bootable Live USB for PC/Laptop 64-bit
  • Live Boot: Simply plug the USB drive into your computer, select the USB drive as your boot device, and experience Linux Mint without installation. This allows you to test the OS and its features before making any changes to your system.
  • Install Option: Once you've tested and decided to keep Linux Mint, you can easily install it on your computer directly from the USB drive.
  • Pre-installed software like LibreOffice for office tasks, a capable web browser (Firefox), email client (Thunderbird), and multimedia tools. This minimizes the need for additional downloads, saving you time and effort.
  • Resource Efficiency: Designed to run efficiently on a variety of hardware configurations. It demands fewer system resources compared to some other operating systems, making it an excellent choice for older computers or devices with limited hardware specifications.
  • Compatible with PC/Laptop/Desktop brands - Dell, HP, Sony, Lenovo, Samsung, Acer, Toshiba & more. Minimum system requirements 4 GB RAM Dual-Core Processor (2 GHz) 20 GB of free disk space

Choose a particular snapshot instead

To roll back to a specific snapshot, append its ID:

transactional-update rollback SNAPSHOT_ID

Replace SNAPSHOT_ID with the ID of the snapshot you intend to use. The release notes do not provide a snapshot-discovery command in this rollback instruction, so identify the target using the tools and boot options available on your installation rather than guessing an ID.

Use transactional package-management commands afterward

For the Leap 15.6 Transactional Server role, the release notes give these commands for common software changes:

  • Update the system: transactional-update up
  • Install a package: transactional-update pkg in PACKAGE_NAME
  • Remove a package: transactional-update pkg rm PACKAGE_NAME

Do not substitute YaST or ordinary zypper package management for this documented transactional workflow. The release notes explain that YaST is unsuitable because it makes changes immediately and cannot edit a read-only filesystem.

How this differs from a conventional Snapper rollback

Leap also documents a separate rollback route using Snapper. It is for supported systems using the conventional snapshot setup; it is not interchangeable with the Transactional Server command sequence above.

  1. In the boot menu, select Bootable snapshots and boot the snapshot you want to test.
  2. Check whether the system works as expected. Snapshot-included filesystem parts are mounted read-only during this trial boot, so you cannot write to snapshot-included directories.
  3. If the snapshot is suitable, run sudo snapper rollback, then reboot into the default boot entry.
  4. If it is unsuitable, reboot into the current state or choose another recovery route instead of committing to that snapshot.

The procedure and its conditions are described in the openSUSE Leap 15.6 Snapper reference.

Requirements and coverage of the Snapper method

  • The root filesystem must be Btrfs and on a single device.
  • The installed bootloader must work, and the system must use the supported default root-subvolume configuration.
  • The rollback covers the contents of /, not other subvolumes. Directories excluded from snapshots are not restored.
  • Software spanning snapshot-included and excluded locations, including some add-ons or third-party software, may stop working after rollback.
  • Data written outside the snapshot during a trial boot is not lost as a result of a later rollback, but writes to snapshot-included directories are not possible during that boot.

Snapper distinguishes a system rollback, which resets the system to a snapshot state, from undoing selected changes by comparing snapshots and reverting individual file changes. Its reference recommends booting a snapshot and using rollback for a system rollback rather than restoring every file manually.
