Apple’s normal computer-based factory restore does not roll an iPhone back to an older iOS release: it erases the device and installs the latest iOS. To bring back familiar apps, data, and settings, restore an appropriate iCloud or computer backup during setup. That restores saved contents, not the older operating system, and the backup may require a newer iOS version first.
Can you roll back an iOS update?
Not through Apple’s standard factory-restore process. Apple distinguishes reinstalling iOS from installing an earlier version, which it calls downgrading. Its documented computer-based factory restore erases the iPhone and installs the latest iOS; it is not a general-purpose downgrade procedure. Apple’s guidance does not establish whether a particular older iOS build is currently available for a particular iPhone, so do not assume that an earlier release can be installed.

If your real goal is to get back a familiar arrangement of apps, photos, messages, and settings, look for a suitable backup instead. A backup can return the contents it contains, but it does not restore the operating system version that was on the phone when the backup was made. Apple’s guide to restoring an iPhone from a backup explains the available restore paths. Apple’s factory-restore guidance describes the separate erase-and-install process.
Choose the path that matches your goal
| Goal or situation | Use this path | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Bring back familiar data and settings | Restore an iCloud or computer backup during setup | Returns the saved contents in that backup; it does not roll back iOS. |
| Erase the iPhone and reinstall iOS | Computer-based factory restore | Erases the device and installs the latest iOS, rather than an earlier release. |
| iPhone will not start, is not recognized, or shows a Connect to Computer screen | Recovery mode | Offers Update or Restore troubleshooting options; Restore reinstalls iOS and erases data. |
Before you erase or restore
- Make a current backup if the iPhone still works. Check the date and size of the backup you plan to use before erasing. If you use a computer backup, make sure you know its encryption password if one was set.
- Check software compatibility. A backup may require newer iOS software than the iPhone currently has. An iCloud restore can prompt for an update, and a computer backup can fail if the installed software is too old.
- Be precise about “Restore.” “Restore Backup” means copying saved contents back to the iPhone. A computer’s factory “Restore” means erasing the phone and reinstalling iOS.
- Protect data created since the backup. Restoring an older backup can replace the current setup. If anything on the phone matters, preserve it before starting another restore attempt.
Apple says restoring an iPhone to factory settings from a computer does not delete its eSIM. That does not change the data-erasing effect of the factory restore. Apple’s factory-restore instructions cover that process.

Restore a familiar setup from iCloud
- Start with an erased iPhone at the Hello screen. If the phone is already set up, Apple says you must erase it before using the iCloud-backup restore flow.
- Follow setup until Transfer Your Apps & Data, then choose From iCloud Backup.
- Sign in to your Apple Account and select the backup with the appropriate date and contents.
- Keep the iPhone connected to Wi-Fi and power while the restore runs. Initial progress and later downloads can take time depending on backup size and network speed.
Apps, photos, and other content may continue downloading after the progress bar finishes. Keep the phone on Wi-Fi and power until downloads are complete. See Apple’s backup-restore steps for the full setup flow.
Restore a familiar setup from a computer backup
- Erase the iPhone first if it is not already at its setup screen, then connect it to the computer that has the backup.
- Open Finder on a Mac, Apple Devices on Windows, or iTunes in an applicable older or alternate setup.
- Select the iPhone and choose Restore Backup.
- Choose the correct backup. If it is encrypted, enter the backup password.
- Keep the iPhone connected while the restore and any subsequent sync finish.
A computer backup can produce an error when the iPhone’s installed software is too old for that backup. In that case, update the iPhone’s software before trying the backup restore again. Apple’s backup restore guide covers computer and iCloud backups.

What to do if a backup requires a newer iOS
If the iPhone says the backup needs newer software, Apple’s sequence is to set up the device without transferring data, update iOS, erase the iPhone, and then set it up again using the backup.
- Continue setup without transferring data from the backup.
- Finish setup, install the required iOS update, and let the phone restart.
- Erase the iPhone after the update.
- Start setup again and restore the desired backup.
Do not mistake this compatibility update for a rollback: the process updates the operating system so the backup can be restored. Follow Apple’s backup guidance if you need the detailed steps for the message you see.

Use recovery mode only when the iPhone needs troubleshooting
Recovery mode is for problems such as an Apple logo that remains on screen without progress, a computer that cannot recognize the iPhone, a Connect to Computer screen, or repeated unsuccessful Recovery Assistant starts. It is not a way to return to an earlier iOS version.
- Connect the iPhone to a computer with USB and open Finder or Apple Devices.
- Use the recovery-mode button sequence for the iPhone generation. Apple lists different sequences for iPhone 8 and later, iPhone 7, and iPhone 6s and earlier.
- When the computer offers Update or Restore, try Update first if you have not already tried it.
- Choose Restore only if appropriate: it reinstalls iOS and erases the iPhone.
Follow Apple’s recovery-mode instructions for the exact button sequence for your model.

If data appears to be missing after the restore
Not everything that appears on an iPhone is necessarily included in a particular backup. Apple notes that information may appear missing because it was not backed up, syncs separately, requires an account sign-in, is no longer available for redownload, or came from a different type of device.
- Check whether the missing information is still syncing or downloading; keep the iPhone connected to Wi-Fi and power.
- Sign in to the account associated with content that syncs separately.
- Check whether another available backup contains the missing data before attempting another restore.
- Preserve any current data before restoring again, especially if it was created after the backup you already used.
Apple’s missing-information troubleshooting guide explains common reasons content may not appear after a restore.

Fix a computer connection or restore error
For specified update or restore errors, Apple recommends checking the USB cable, port, and computer. Try the cable supplied with the iPhone or another Apple-certified cable that matches both your iPhone’s connector and the computer. A keyboard USB port may not provide enough power for the connection.
- Connect directly to another USB port on the computer rather than through a keyboard.
- Try the supplied cable or a compatible Apple-certified data cable.
- Check Apple’s error guidance for the particular code or message you see.
A cable can help with a computer connection; it does not make installing an earlier iOS version possible. See Apple’s update and restore error guidance.
