For a Galaxy running an ordinary stable update, Samsung says you cannot downgrade to earlier firmware after updating to the latest software. Samsung documents a narrow exception for supported phones and tablets running beta software: leave the beta, connect the device to a PC with Smart Switch, and choose Downgrade if the option appears. That rollback initializes the device and erases its data, so back up first.
If you are trying to fix a failed update or a phone stuck in a boot loop, that is a recovery problem—not a downgrade. A factory reset does not restore older firmware, and a phone that will not boot after an update failure may need Samsung service.
First, identify what you are trying to undo
Samsung’s update guidance, last updated September 3, 2026, says a device updated to the latest software cannot be downgraded to a previous firmware version because of enhanced security policies. That rule is about ordinary firmware updates; it does not mean every update problem requires a reset or that a reset returns the device to an older release. Samsung Galaxy software update guidance.

Menu labels and flows vary by model and software version. Update settings may appear as Software update or System updates. Availability can also depend on the original carrier, which may develop and release updates.

How to roll back a Galaxy beta
Samsung’s Beta Community Manager described this route for supported phones and tablets in a community post dated May 23, 2025. Check current eligibility with Samsung for your exact model and beta build; do not assume the option applies to a stable release or every Galaxy device. Samsung Community beta rollback guidance.
- Back up your data. Samsung warns that beta rollback initializes the device, which erases its data.
- Leave the beta program. Follow the exit process for the beta you joined.
- Install Smart Switch on a PC. Use Samsung’s Smart Switch software.
- Connect the phone or tablet to the PC over USB and allow the device to grant access if prompted.
- Open Smart Switch and check for “Downgrade.” If the option is displayed, select it and follow the on-screen instructions.
If Smart Switch does not show Downgrade, the published procedure does not establish another supported route for that device or build. Contact Samsung support rather than trying to force an older firmware onto the device.

Why downloading older firmware may not work
Samsung Knox includes rollback prevention. It checks bootloader and kernel versions and blocks versions Samsung considers unacceptably old. Downloading an older firmware file does not remove that protection or make a stable downgrade supported. Samsung Knox rollback prevention.
Samsung’s current consumer update guidance does not provide a general stable-firmware downgrade procedure. Avoid treating third-party firmware downloads or PC flashing instructions as a universal fix: firmware compatibility and rollback controls vary, and an unsupported attempt can leave the device unusable.

If an update failed or the Galaxy is stuck in a boot loop
Try Samsung’s recovery and troubleshooting steps rather than a voluntary downgrade. Start with the least destructive options; factory reset is a last resort because it erases user data.
Update failed, but the phone still works
- Check that the device has a reliable internet connection and enough available storage, then retry the update.
- Use Smart Switch to check for update or recovery options where available.
- Back up important data before attempting an emergency recovery or reset.

Phone is in a boot loop or will not start normally
Follow Samsung’s troubleshooting steps for a Galaxy that will not start or is stuck in a boot loop. Samsung recommends checking with Smart Switch for a newer software version where possible. Its support page says a factory reset should be used only as a last resort, after trying the preceding steps. A reset erases data and is not a firmware downgrade. Smart Switch recovery on another computer
If you continue update recovery on a different computer, Samsung says the recovery code is available only on the computer where the update failed. The alternate-computer process includes a factory reset, so back up first if you can. Samsung Smart Switch emergency software recovery.

Phone still will not boot after the update failure
Samsung says service may be required to reflash a phone that fails to boot normally after an update fails. Contact Samsung support or an authorized service center with the model and software details instead of following generic flashing instructions. Carrier update availability can vary, so the original carrier may also be relevant. Samsung: software update failed.

Make a current backup before beta rollback, emergency recovery, or a factory reset. Those operations can initialize or erase the device. If Smart Switch recovery requires a reset, plan for data loss rather than assuming the process will preserve files. Samsung’s boot-loop instructions place reset after other troubleshooting steps.
- Back up the data and settings you need using a method available to your device.
- Confirm that you can access the account credentials needed to set up the Galaxy again.
- If you need a local backup of extra files, use storage and a cable compatible with your computer and phone; a USB adapter may be needed depending on the ports. Samsung recommends the supplied cable where available.
A backup protects data; it does not make a stable-firmware downgrade possible.
