To revoke a smart-contract token approval after a presale, find the wallet’s allowances on every network you used, review each token and spender, then submit an on-chain revoke transaction and confirm it. Disconnecting your wallet from a presale site does not revoke an allowance.

What a token approval means after a presale

A token approval, or allowance, gives a smart contract permission to move specified tokens from your wallet. It is separate from connecting your wallet to a website: disconnecting stops that site’s wallet connection, but does not change an allowance recorded on-chain. MetaMask explains the difference between allowances and connecting to a dapp.

A presale can involve a purchase contract, while claiming tokens, swapping, or using a listing may involve other contracts. Don’t assume that every wallet connection created an allowance—or that the presale used a particular spender. Check your own wallet address, network, token, spender, and transaction history.

How to check and revoke approvals

  1. Choose an approval checker or block explorer. ethereum.org lists tools for reviewing token access, and MetaMask describes its wallet and explorer options. Type the official domain carefully or use a bookmark; an approval checker can display and initiate transactions, but it does not guarantee a wallet or project is safe.
  2. Search your wallet and check every relevant network. Enter your wallet address or connect your wallet, then select each network you used for the presale and related actions. Approval records are network-specific: a check on one chain does not cover another.
  3. Review the details before acting. For each entry, inspect the token, spender or contract, and allowance. Decide whether you still need that permission; revoking an allowance used by an active position or a planned action can disrupt it. The Revoke.cash guide to approvals explains the effect of revoking.
  4. Submit the revoke transaction. For an ERC-20 token, revocation sets the allowance to zero. NFT approvals use a disabled or false approval state. Check the network and transaction details in your wallet prompt before signing; the revocation itself requires an on-chain transaction. MetaMask’s approval guide explains that revoking is also an on-chain action.
  5. Pay the network fee and verify the result. Wait for confirmation, then refresh or reconnect the checker and confirm that the allowance changed or disappeared. Revocation incurs a network gas fee.
  6. Repeat on the other networks you used. If you later use the same token and contract again, you may need to grant a new approval.

Which route should you use?

You can review approvals through a wallet feature, a block explorer, or a third-party approval service. Compare the options by the networks they support, whether they work with your wallet, whether you can search an address without connecting, and whether you can inspect the spender and transaction before signing.

What revoking does—and does not do

  • It prevents a contract from using the allowance you revoked in future transactions. It does not reverse a transfer that has already happened or recover stolen assets. See Revoke.cash’s explanation of token approvals.
  • It does not withdraw tokens already deposited or staked. Revoke.cash notes in its approval FAQ that deposited or staked assets remain in place, though adding tokens later may require a new approval.
  • It does not secure a compromised recovery phrase or private key. If you suspect someone has access to your wallet, revoking one allowance is not a substitute for addressing that compromise.
  • It may mean approving the contract again if you choose to use it later, and that new approval will also require a transaction.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating disconnecting as revocation: a website connection and an on-chain token allowance are separate permissions.
  • Checking only one chain: repeat the review on every network used for the presale, claim, swap, or other related interaction.
  • Signing without checking the prompt: confirm the network and transaction details, and verify that the spender is the one you intended to manage.
  • Revoking blindly: first consider whether an active position or a future action depends on the allowance.
  • Expecting an undo or refund: revocation costs gas and changes future permission; it does not recover tokens already transferred.
