To revoke a risky token approval, use a trusted allowance checker or your wallet’s allowance-management feature on the network where the approval was made, then submit and verify an on-chain revocation transaction. Disconnecting a dapp is not enough: it ends the wallet connection, but an existing token allowance can remain active.
What a token approval allows—and why disconnecting is different
A token allowance gives a smart contract permission to spend a particular token from your wallet, usually up to a specified amount. An unlimited allowance can be convenient because you do not have to approve the same contract repeatedly, but it also gives the spender greater potential access if the contract is compromised or behaves maliciously. Ethereum.org explains that these permissions do not have an expiration date, so an old approval can remain in place until it is changed or revoked: Ethereum.org’s guide to revoking smart contract access.
Disconnecting from a website or dapp only ends its active connection to your wallet. It does not cancel an allowance already recorded on-chain. MetaMask puts the distinction plainly: “Since token approvals are conducted on-chain, revoking the approval must also be on-chain.” MetaMask’s token approval guidance explains the same difference.
How to revoke an approval
1. Open a checker for the correct network
Use a trusted approval checker or a wallet feature, and confirm that it supports the chain and token type you need to review. Ethereum.org lists Etherscan and Blockscout for Ethereum, along with Revoke, Unrekt, and EverRevoke for multiple networks. MetaMask documents Etherscan, BscScan, Polygonscan, and its Portfolio allowance feature for Ethereum Mainnet, Polygon, and BNB Chain. These are documented options, not an endorsement or a guarantee of current coverage; check the official interface before signing.

Use a bookmarked official address when possible. If a checker lets you search by public wallet address, you may be able to inspect approvals without connecting first. Never enter your recovery phrase or seed phrase into a checker. Ethereum.org’s scam help and reporting guidance warns that legitimate apps will never ask for it.
2. Review the token, spender, and allowance
Check which token is involved, which spender contract received permission, and how much it can spend. Prioritize allowances you no longer need, do not recognize, or know you granted to a suspicious site. An unfamiliar contract name alone does not prove that an approval is malicious; verify the project and contract identity independently rather than relying only on a label in a checker.

3. Revoke or reduce the allowance
Select the checker’s revoke option, or reduce the allowance if the interface supports that and you want to retain limited access. Review the transaction details displayed in your wallet before signing. Revocation is an on-chain transaction, so it requires gas; the fee and confirmation time vary with the network and its current conditions.
4. Confirm the change
Wait for the transaction to confirm, then refresh the checker. If needed, reconnect the wallet or reselect the network. Verify that the allowance has disappeared or changed to the intended amount before moving on.

5. Repeat on every network you use
Approval lists are network-specific. An Ethereum Mainnet review does not show approvals on Polygon, BNB Chain, or another network. Repeat the review for each relevant chain and token type supported by the checker; do not assume a single scan covers every wallet permission.
Choosing a checker or wallet feature
Wallet-native tools, block explorers, and multi-network services can all help manage token allowances. Compare the specific interface rather than assuming one category is safer or cheaper: check supported networks and token standards, whether it clearly shows the spender and allowance, whether it can reduce as well as revoke permission, and what transaction details it presents. The sources documenting these options do not establish an independent usability or cost ranking.

What revocation does not do
- It does not recover tokens already taken. Revoking an allowance prevents future use of that permission after the revocation takes effect; it cannot reverse a completed transfer. Ethereum.org notes that confirmed Ethereum transactions are final.
- It does not necessarily end a financial position. Ethereum.org says revoking an approval does not itself terminate staking, pooling, or lending positions.
- It may mean approving the contract again later. If you return to a dapp that needs the token, you may have to grant a new allowance.
- It does not guarantee that every kind of wallet authorization is covered. Approval checkers address token approvals and allowances; their coverage of other signature types or non-standard authorizations is not established here.
If you suspect your wallet is compromised
If you believe an attacker has access to the wallet or has already taken assets, treat revocation as one part of a broader response—not a way to undo the theft. Ethereum.org advises moving remaining assets to a new secure wallet and revoking approvals. Use a device and wallet setup you trust, and do not expose your recovery phrase while responding. A confirmed theft transaction cannot be reversed by revoking the spender’s allowance.
