On macOS 12 or earlier, use System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy. You can change these choices without uninstalling the app.
Open the privacy controls for your macOS version
- macOS 13 or later: Choose Apple menu > System Settings, then select Privacy & Security in the sidebar.
- macOS 12 or earlier: Choose Apple menu > System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy. These releases use different settings labels and layout from current macOS.
In Privacy & Security, select the category you want to audit. The categories offered can vary by macOS release. Apple’s current guide includes Location Services, Calendars, Contacts, Files & Folders, Full Disk Access, HomeKit, Photos, Reminders, Accessibility, App Management, Automation, Bluetooth, Camera, Developer Tools, Focus, Input Monitoring, Local Network, Microphone, Motion & Fitness, Remote Desktop, Screen & System Audio Recording, and Speech Recognition. Apple’s Privacy & Security guide describes the available controls.
Turn off an app’s permission
- Choose a category, such as Camera, Microphone, or Contacts.
- Review the apps listed for that category. Switch off the app whose access you want to revoke.
- If you are changing access to a protected resource later, make the choice in the same category. macOS lets you change how much you share after an app requests access; see Apple’s guide to controlling app access to information.
This changes the app’s permission, not the app’s installation. If the app needs that resource later, its relevant feature may no longer work unless you grant access again.
Prioritize permissions by what they expose
Start with permissions that capture personal information, expose many files, or let an app control or observe activity. Then check ordinary data categories against what you expect the app to do. Whether a particular app genuinely needs access is your judgment; the permission list itself does not establish why the app requested it.

Camera and Microphone
Use the Camera and Microphone categories to review listed apps and turn off access individually. Apple notes that built-in FaceTime and Photo Booth automatically have camera access. For microphone activity, the Recording Indicator in Control Centre can show when the microphone is in use or has been used recently. See Apple’s instructions for camera and microphone access.
Files & Folders
Review access by location rather than treating file access as one all-or-nothing choice. Depending on the app and settings, you can control access to locations such as Desktop, Documents, Downloads, network volumes, and removable volumes. Turn off only the locations the app should not access. Apple explains the controls in its Files & Folders guide.

Full Disk Access
Treat Full Disk Access as a particularly broad permission. Apple defines it as access to all files, including data from other apps such as Mail, Messages, Safari, and Home, as well as Time Machine backups and some administrative settings. Grant or retain it only when the app’s function warrants that scope; review it in Privacy & Security > Full Disk Access. The scope is described in Apple’s Privacy & Security guide.
Accessibility, Automation, and Input Monitoring
Accessibility lets an app run scripts and system commands to control your Mac, so Apple advises allowing only apps you know and trust. Review it under Privacy & Security > Accessibility and switch off access if it is no longer needed. Automation concerns an app controlling other apps, while Input Monitoring concerns monitoring keyboard or pointing-device input. Check both when the app’s purpose does not clearly call for that capability. Apple’s settings guide describes these categories, and its Accessibility guide explains that permission.

Screen & System Audio Recording
Review Screen & System Audio Recording for apps that can record the screen or system audio. If that capability does not fit the app’s purpose, turn off its access in the category. Apple lists this control in its Privacy & Security settings guide.
Location and personal-data categories
Check Location Services, Contacts, Calendars, Photos, and Reminders, along with other data categories shown on your Mac. Keep access aligned with the features you use and the information those features reasonably require. Available categories may differ by macOS version.

What an empty list means—and what revoking access does not do
An app may not appear in a category if it has not requested that kind of access. For Camera specifically, Apple says an empty list means no installed app has requested camera permission. An empty list is not evidence that an app has already been denied access after a request. Apps may ask when they first need a protected resource, and you can change your choice later; Apple describes that flexibility in its app privacy controls guide.
Turning off a macOS permission controls future access through that permission. It does not erase information the app may already have collected or uploaded. For information collected by an app or website, consult its privacy policy and terms; Apple also recommends reviewing third-party privacy practices in its guidance for Camera, Microphone, and Files & Folders.

Manage website permissions separately
Website camera permissions are browser settings, not necessarily part of the per-app list for native Mac apps. In Safari, go to Safari > Settings > Websites > Camera to review website access. Apple’s Camera guide gives this Safari route.
