Use the service-specific steps below, and distinguish removing a conversation from your visible history from deleting all provider-held copies.
Before you delete a conversation
First decide whether you want to hide a chat, remove it from your account history, inspect an activity record, or change how future conversations are used. These actions are not interchangeable. Menu labels and availability can vary by device, app version, plan, account type, and rollout; a work or school account may also be governed by an administrator.
- Archive removes a conversation from a regular list without deleting it.
- Delete removes a conversation from the account view and starts the provider’s stated deletion process, which may not erase every retained copy immediately.
- Activity or model-improvement settings govern records or use of conversations, but switching them off does not necessarily erase existing chats or data.
ChatGPT: find, archive, or delete chats
Review or find a conversation
Open ChatGPT’s chat history and use Search to locate a conversation. If it is missing from the regular sidebar, check Settings > Data controls > Archived chats (the control may appear as View archived chats). If history seems incomplete, OpenAI recommends checking that you are signed into the correct account and workspace. See OpenAI’s instructions for deleting and archiving chats.
Delete one chat
- In chat history, open the conversation’s more-options menu.
- Select Delete and confirm.
The chat disappears from your account view immediately. OpenAI says deleted chats are scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days, except for data already de-identified and disassociated from your account or data retained longer for security or legal obligations. A deleted chat cannot be restored in ChatGPT or through Support.

Archive instead of deleting
Choose Archive from the chat menu to clear a conversation from the regular sidebar while keeping it in your account. Archived chats remain searchable; manage or unarchive them under Settings > Data controls > Archived chats. Archiving does not change the chat’s retention period. As OpenAI puts it, “Archiving removes the chat from the regular sidebar but does not delete it.” See OpenAI’s explanation of archive and delete controls.
Archive or delete all chats
Open Settings > Data controls and choose Archive all chats or Delete all chats. Review the confirmation carefully: deleting all chats cannot be undone and can include conversations in projects. Use archive if you only want to clear the list.

Understand data-use settings and separate files
In Settings > Data controls, Improve the model for everyone controls whether new conversations are used to train OpenAI models. Turning it off does not remove chats from history. Temporary Chats do not appear in history, create or update memories, or improve models; OpenAI may retain them for safety for up to 30 days. If you save a Temporary Chat, it becomes a regular chat. Files saved separately in ChatGPT’s Library are not deleted when you delete a chat; remove those files separately. See OpenAI’s Data Controls FAQ and Library guidance.
Export ChatGPT data before deleting
Signed-in Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users can request a data copy through settings. Self-service export is not available for Business, Enterprise, or Healthcare workspaces; ask the workspace owner. See OpenAI’s export instructions.
Claude: review, delete, or export conversations
Find and delete a chat
On the web, find a conversation in the left sidebar or open Chats and tasks to view history. Open the conversation’s ⋮ menu, choose Delete, and confirm. To remove several at once, select chats or use Select all, then confirm deletion. Claude also provides delete controls in its iOS and Android apps. Consult Claude’s conversation management help if the labels differ.
What Claude deletion does
Anthropic says a deleted consumer conversation disappears from history immediately and is deleted from backend systems within 30 days. Deleting a conversation does not itself delete other account data such as projects or account information. Deleting the account is a separate, permanent action that removes access to account and conversation data. See Anthropic’s data-retention explanation.
Export Claude data first
Individual Free, Pro, and Max users can request conversation and account data from Settings > Privacy in Claude’s web app or Claude Desktop. You cannot start an export from Claude for iOS or Android. Anthropic emails a download link after processing; the link expires 24 hours after delivery. See Claude’s export instructions.

Find recent conversations
Sign in, open the Gemini app menu, and look under Recent for pinned and recent chats. History controls for personal accounts require Keep Activity to be on. For a work or school Google account, a Workspace administrator may control activity settings. See Google’s Gemini Apps activity controls.
Delete a recent chat
- Mobile app: Open the menu, press and hold a chat under Recent, then tap Delete.
- Web: Open the menu, select the chat, then choose More > Delete.
Google says deleting a chat from pinned or recent chats also removes its related activity from Gemini Apps Activity and can delete content created in that chat, such as Canvas documents or apps. See Google’s chat and activity controls.
Review or delete activity records
Open Gemini Apps Activity from the app’s profile or settings path, or use Google’s Gemini activity page. When signed in with Keep Activity on, you can review prompts, delete activity, and turn the setting off. Turning it off alone does not delete past records; choose a deletion action to remove existing activity.
Know what Keep Activity off does not remove
Google says that with Keep Activity off, conversations may remain associated with the account for up to 72 hours to provide the service and process feedback. Conversations reviewed or annotated by human reviewers are stored separately and are not deleted when account activity is deleted; Google says they may be retained for up to three years. These are Google’s stated Gemini handling periods, not general rules for other chatbots. See Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub.
Check the auto-delete setting
Google states that Gemini Apps Activity auto-deletes after 18 months by default. The available choices include 3 months, 36 months, or indefinite retention. This setting governs activity retention; it is not the same as manually deleting a particular conversation. See Google’s activity retention settings.

If a chat is missing or the controls are unavailable
- Confirm you are in the correct account and, where applicable, the intended workspace.
- Check archived chats in ChatGPT rather than assuming a missing sidebar entry was deleted.
- For Gemini, check whether Keep Activity is enabled and whether a Workspace administrator controls the account.
- For organization accounts, ask the administrator about retention, export, and deletion permissions; self-service controls may be restricted.
