To review ChatGPT privacy controls, open Settings and check Data controls and Personalization. Turn off Improve the model for everyone to opt new covered conversations out of model improvement; use Temporary Chat when you do not want a conversation in chat history or used to update Memory. These actions are separate: turning off model improvement does not delete saved chats, and Temporary Chat may still be retained for safety for up to 30 days.
Start by checking which kind of account you use
Settings and data-management routes can differ depending on whether you use a personal account or a workspace managed by an organization. Sign in to the account whose data you want to manage, then follow the labels currently shown in its settings; feature availability can vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace policy.
For a managed workspace, an administrator may control access, retention, exports, or which settings members can change. If a control is unavailable, check with the workspace owner rather than assuming the setting is absent for every account.
Choose which data control matches your goal

Turn off model improvement while keeping chat history
- Open ChatGPT and select your profile menu, then choose Settings.
- Open Data controls.
- Switch off Improve the model for everyone.
The setting applies to new conversations and covered tasks, and for a signed-in account it applies across devices. Existing saved conversations remain in your history. OpenAI also notes that if you submit explicit product feedback, the conversation associated with that feedback may be used to improve models even if you have opted out. Use Temporary Chat for a conversation you do not want in history
Start a new conversation and choose Temporary Chat before sending your message. Temporary chats do not appear in chat history, do not create or update Memory, and are not used to improve OpenAI models while they remain temporary. OpenAI may retain a copy for safety for up to 30 days. If you save a temporary chat, it becomes a regular chat and follows the account’s personalization and model-improvement settings. Review or remove personalization memories
- Open Settings.
- Select Personalization.
- Review the Memory controls and available memory sources shown for your account.
- To remove something ChatGPT remembers, delete the saved memory and the conversation where you originally shared it.
Memory controls personalization; it is separate from the model-improvement preference. Deleting only the originating conversation can leave its saved memory in place. Memory features and labels can vary by plan, region, and workspace. Consult OpenAI’s Memory FAQ for current details.

Export your data or delete conversations
Request a data export
Eligible signed-in personal Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users can request a copy of their data in ChatGPT settings or through the Privacy Portal. If you use a managed workspace, ask its administrator whether exports are available; the organization can control that option. See OpenAI’s export instructions.
Archive versus delete a chat
- Archive removes a conversation from the main chat list while retaining it outside that list.
- Delete removes it from your account view and schedules permanent deletion, subject to applicable exceptions. Deleted chats cannot be restored.
If you want related data removed too, check separately for saved memories and files in Library; deleting the conversation does not necessarily delete those items. Review OpenAI’s chat deletion and archiving instructions and its chat and file retention information.

What to check if a setting is missing
- Confirm you are signed in to the intended account, not a different personal or work account.
- Check whether you are in a managed workspace; the administrator may control the setting.
- Look for current labels in the ChatGPT app or website, since availability can differ by platform, region, plan, and workspace configuration.
- For export or deletion questions tied to an organization account, contact the workspace owner.
