Return the screenshot’s encoded image bytes as the successful HTTP response body, and set Content-Type to match those bytes: image/png, image/jpeg, or image/webp. Request the format using your screenshot provider’s documented option, check the HTTP status before treating the body as an image, and send errors separately rather than passing them off as a picture.
Return bytes, not JSON
A screenshot endpoint’s successful response should contain the encoded image itself. The bytes are binary data; a client should not try to parse them as JSON. Set the response media type to match the encoding, and keep the filename extension consistent if you supply a download filename.
For ScreenshotEngine, successful captures return raw bytes; its documentation says to read Content-Type and not call response.json() on a successful capture. Its response mapping is JPEG to image/jpeg and .jpg, PNG to image/png and .png, and WebP to image/webp and .webp (ScreenshotEngine parameter reference). The exact response contract is provider-specific.
Choose and request the output format
Accept a constrained format choice from your caller, validate it, then pass the corresponding option to the renderer. Do not assume one provider’s parameter name, spelling, response mode, or default applies to another.

Explicitly request the format your endpoint promises. Provider defaults differ, and a format parameter alone does not prove that the response is binary: confirm the provider’s response mode too.
Set response headers to match the actual bytes
When your own API forwards or wraps a renderer, preserve the renderer’s bytes and set an accurate media type. For the three formats in this guide:

Do not infer the media type only from a requested format or filename: use the renderer’s documented output and ensure the body really contains the corresponding encoding. If callers should download rather than display the result inline, you may additionally set Content-Disposition with a filename whose extension matches the bytes.
Handle success and failure as different response types
- Validate the requested page URL and format before starting a capture.
- Call the rendering provider using its documented format and response-mode options.
- Check the provider’s HTTP status and any documented capture result before forwarding the body.
- On successful image capture, return the raw bytes with the matching
Content-Type. - On failure, return an appropriate error status and an error representation such as JSON. Do not send a JSON error body with an image media type or save it with an image extension.
ScreenshotEngine documents successful captures as HTTP 200 with raw bytes and says errors return JSON, making the status check essential (ScreenshotEngine parameter reference). Other providers may have different status codes and response modes; follow their contracts.

Choose a format for the consumer, not by an assumed winner
- PNG: use it when your downstream workflow calls for PNG output or lossless image encoding.
- JPEG: choose it where lossy output is acceptable and the consumer expects JPEG.
- WebP: RFC 9649 describes WebP as supporting both lossy and lossless compression, alpha transparency, and animation (RFC 9649).
There is no universal best format for screenshot size or quality. If bytes matter, compare representative pages at the actual dimensions and quality settings you plan to use, then record the provider, settings, pages, and date. ScreenshotOne documents quality controls for formats including JPEG and WebP, but controls and defaults vary by provider (ScreenshotOne options).
Verify the endpoint before shipping
Test each advertised format and at least one failure path. For successful responses, verify the HTTP status, Content-Type, filename if present, and that an image decoder can read the body. For failures, confirm that clients receive an error status and the documented error representation rather than image bytes. Avoid testing only the extension: a file named shot.webp may still contain another format or a JSON error.

Common integration problems
- The saved “image” is unreadable: inspect the HTTP status and body before saving; the provider may have returned an error document. Keep error parsing separate from binary handling.
- The browser downloads or displays the wrong type: compare the actual encoded format with
Content-Typeand the filename extension; make all three agree. - The response unexpectedly contains JSON or no body: check the provider’s response mode. ScreenshotOne documents binary
