To retry a failed website screenshot request in n8n, open the workflow’s HTTP Request node, go to Settings, enable Retry On Fail, then set a finite Max Tries and an appropriate Wait Between Tries (ms). Use the screenshot API provider’s documentation to choose a delay and confirm which failures are safe to retry: n8n’s settings are generic and do not define a provider’s rate limits, retryable status codes, timeout behavior, or billing rules.

Set Max Tries to a finite number. This limits repeated attempts when a request continues to fail.

Set Wait Between Tries (ms) to a delay that complies with the provider’s published limits and retry guidance. n8n documentation shows 1000 ms as an example; it is not a universal recommendation.

After the request, check that the response contains a usable screenshot before marking the workflow’s work as successful. The response fields and format depend on the API you use.

n8n documentation says that when Retry On Fail is enabled, the node automatically tries the request again if it fails the first time. Automatic retries address an individual failed request. Pacing controls how quickly a workflow sends multiple requests. If a workflow processes many URLs, use the method that matches the problem rather than treating retries as a substitute for a request-rate limit.

n8n documents Retry On Fail, request batching, and Loop Over Items with Wait as ways to handle API rate limits. A 429 response often indicates that a request exceeded a rate limit, but the provider’s documentation determines the permitted request rate and any retry instructions.

Keep automatic retries separate from manual recovery
A node retry runs as part of the workflow when that node’s request fails. Retrying a failed execution from the Executions view is an operator recovery action for a workflow run that has already failed. n8n documents retrying with either the currently saved workflow or the original workflow, using previous execution data; see All executions.
Verify provider behavior before setting retry rules
Because the screenshot API provider is unspecified, there is no evidence here for provider-specific status-code rules or billing behavior. Before choosing a retry policy, check the provider’s current documentation for:

Rate limits, including any separate limits for batch requests.
Do not assume that a timeout, blank result, bot check, or server error has the same meaning across providers. The API’s response contract should determine whether a run is retried, paced, or sent for manual inspection.
