The dependable way to limit a child’s games, communication, and purchases is to use a separate child account managed by an adult family account—not restrictions attached to the adult’s own login. PlayStation uses a family manager, age levels, communication controls, game exceptions, a monthly spending limit, and a checkout-password option. Xbox uses a Microsoft family organizer, privacy and online-safety controls, content limits, purchase approval, and Microsoft Family Safety schedules. Set the controls on the child’s profile, then test the specific game and store because account, console, and game settings can interact.
Start with the right account structure
Both platforms apply parental controls to an account. If a child plays through the parent’s adult account, the child may inherit the adult’s permissions and the parent may have to hand over credentials to let the child play. A separate child account keeps age, communication, spending, and play-time rules attached to the child rather than to the console.
PlayStation family manager and child account
On PlayStation, the adult who creates and manages the family is the family manager. Each child should have a separate child account for online services. The family manager can appoint another adult as a parent or guardian who is allowed to approve certain requests, while the child remains subject to the account’s age and safety settings.

On Xbox, add the child’s Microsoft account to the Microsoft family. The adult organizer manages the child profile in Xbox privacy and online-safety controls, the Xbox Family Settings app, and Microsoft Family Safety. Keep the organizer account private and do not use it as the child’s everyday Xbox login.

|---|---|---|
| Account model | Family manager with a separate child account; a parent or guardian can be appointed for approvals. | Microsoft family organizer with a child Microsoft account. |
| Mature-content control | Age levels for games and apps, preset restriction levels, Allowed Games, and exception requests. | Content restrictions and age limits in Privacy & online safety and Microsoft family settings. |
| Voice and text | Communication and User-Generated Content > Restrict disables text messaging and voice chat; a specific game can be approved as an exception. | Approved contacts, privacy controls, and child-default message filtering; behavior can still vary by game. |
| Purchases | Monthly Spending Limit, which defaults to 0, plus Require Password at Checkout on the family-manager account. | Ask a parent under Buy & download, with optional spending limits in Microsoft Family Safety. |
| Phone and web management | PlayStation Family app and Account Management web tools use the same family-management model; menu availability can vary. | Xbox Family Settings and Microsoft Family Safety apps manage the child profile; connected Xbox, Windows, and Android devices can follow the limits. |
Names and locations can change by console generation, region, account type, or app version. If a label differs, look for the child’s profile under the family-management or privacy-and-safety area rather than changing settings on the adult profile.
How to restrict a child’s PlayStation account
1. Create or select the child account
- Sign in as the PlayStation family manager.
- Create a child account or select the child account already in the family. Do not apply the child’s restrictions only to the family manager account.
- Make sure the child signs in with that account on every PlayStation device used in the home.
PlayStation states that each child needs a separate child account for online services. The account is the object that carries the rules, so changing a console setting while the child is signed in elsewhere does not justify giving the child the adult login.
2. Open the family-management controls on PS5
- On the PS5, sign in as the family manager.
- Open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management.
- Select the child, then edit the child’s parental controls.
The PlayStation Family app and Account Management web tools provide the same family-management approach. Use whichever is convenient, but confirm that you selected the intended child profile before saving.
3. Block mature games and apps
Set the child’s age level for games and apps first. Then choose the appropriate preset restriction level for the household. A stricter preset is useful when you want a broad default rather than evaluating every title individually.

For a curated list, use Allowed Games. This lets the family manager permit a particular game even when the general age restriction would block it. The child can request an exception when a game is blocked. The family manager, or an appointed parent or guardian, can approve that request in the Family app or Family Management.
- Use the age level as the baseline for unfamiliar games.
- Use Allowed Games for a title you have checked and are comfortable permitting.
- Review downloadable content and user-generated features separately; a game that is acceptable at its base rating can expose additional content through online services.
4. Turn off voice chat, messaging, and other user-generated content
In the child’s controls, choose Communication and User-Generated Content > Restrict. PlayStation describes this as restricting communication with other players. It disables sending text messages and voice chatting with other players and can also block screenshots, video clips, broadcasts, and other players’ user-generated content.
If the child needs communication in one particular title, use the game-specific exception path rather than restoring communication globally. Approve only the game you have reviewed, and recheck its own voice, text, and friend settings after an update.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches5. Stop purchases and in-game spending
Set the child’s Monthly Spending Limit. On PS5, the path is Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management > child > Parental Controls > Monthly Spending Limit. PlayStation says the default is 0. Purchases made by the child use the family manager’s wallet, so a limit of 0 prevents the child account from spending through that wallet unless you deliberately raise the limit.

Add Require Password at Checkout on the family-manager account. This prevents a purchase from proceeding without the account password if somebody reaches the adult checkout flow. Use a unique password and do not save it where the child can retrieve it.
6. Manage PlayStation controls from a phone or browser
The PlayStation Family app and Account Management web tools let the family manager review the child and approve an Allowed Games request without standing at the console. App screens can differ by region and version, so verify that the selected child and the saved value match the setting you intended.
How to restrict a child’s Xbox account
1. Add the child to your Microsoft family
- Use the adult Microsoft account as the family organizer.
- Add the child’s Microsoft account to the family and have the child use that account on Xbox.
- In the Xbox Family Settings app, open the child’s profile and select the settings icon to configure controls.
Controls follow the child’s Microsoft account. Do not test them while signed in as the organizer, because the organizer’s permissions can make a setting appear ineffective.

- Keep child-default message filtering enabled for a younger child, then loosen it only after checking the child’s needs.
- Apply the age and content limit before allowing a new game, rather than relying on the game’s store description alone.
Xbox’s platform settings govern the account, but a game can implement its own voice, text, friend, or age gate. Check the title’s communication menu as well as the Xbox privacy controls.
3. Require approval for Xbox purchases
To turn on purchase approval, sign in with the organizer account and follow this Xbox path:
- Open Profile & system > Settings > Account > Family settings > Manage family members.
- Select the child.
- Open Privacy & online safety > Xbox Live privacy > View details & customize > Buy & download.
- Turn on Ask a parent.
With Ask a parent enabled, the child must obtain the organizer’s approval before buying from the Microsoft Store. Microsoft’s parental-guidance checklist specifically recommends ensuring that ask to buy is on. Keep the organizer account signed out on the child’s console so approval cannot be silently granted.
4. Add spending and time limits
Microsoft Family Safety can add daily app and game limits across connected Xbox, Windows, and Android devices. In the app, select the family member, choose Xbox, tap Set time limits > Apps, features, and games, enable limits, and choose the daily schedule.

Time limits control access duration; they do not replace purchase approval. Use Ask a parent for buying decisions and Family Safety schedules for when the child can play. If the child uses several connected devices, check each device appears under the same Microsoft family member.
5. Manage Xbox controls from a phone
The Xbox Family Settings app exposes the child profile and a settings icon for parental controls. Microsoft Family Safety provides the cross-device schedule controls. App names, supported features, and menu labels can vary by region and version, so confirm a change by opening the child profile again after saving.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What happens when platform and game settings conflict?
Platform controls are the baseline, not a guarantee that every game behaves identically. A game may use a separate account, its own voice system, or a third-party service. A child may therefore be unable to use the platform’s messaging but still see a game-specific voice toggle, or the reverse.
Recommended Free Tools
If a blocked game appears playable
- Check that the child, not the adult, is signed in.
- Confirm the child’s age level and preset restriction on PlayStation, or content and age limits on Xbox.
- Look for an Allowed Games approval on PlayStation or a title-specific exception.
- Close and relaunch the game after changing the setting.
If voice chat still works
- On PlayStation, verify Communication and User-Generated Content > Restrict is set on the child account.
- On Xbox, review approved contacts, privacy settings, and child-default message filtering.
- Open the game’s own audio, communication, and parental-control menus; platform restrictions cannot replace a third-party account’s controls.
- Check console party chat separately from in-game chat, because they may be governed by different controls.
If a purchase succeeds unexpectedly
- On PlayStation, confirm the child’s Monthly Spending Limit is 0 or at the intended amount and that Require Password at Checkout is enabled for the family-manager account.
- On Xbox, verify Ask a parent is enabled under Buy & download and that the organizer account is not being used for play.
- Review the store account and wallet associated with the transaction; a purchase made through a different adult account will not be governed by the child’s limit.
If a new setting has no visible effect
PlayStation says a child should sign out and back in after a change while playing. A setting changed on one device affects the child’s other devices, but the account must refresh before the new permission is observed. Xbox limits likewise follow the family member’s Microsoft account and connected devices. Sign out the child, restart the game, and then test again on the child profile.
A practical setup and review routine
- Inventory accounts: list every child account, adult account, console, PC, mobile device, and game account the child uses.
- Separate identities: create or verify the PlayStation child account or Microsoft child account before changing restrictions.
- Set the broad baseline: choose PlayStation age levels and presets, or Xbox content and age limits.
- Decide communication: use PlayStation’s Restrict control, or Xbox approved contacts and child-default filtering. Do not assume a game’s default is safe.
- Lock purchases: keep PlayStation’s monthly limit at 0 unless you intend to grant an allowance; enable checkout password. On Xbox, enable Ask a parent.
- Configure schedules if needed: use Microsoft Family Safety for daily Xbox, Windows, and Android limits. PlayStation’s controls described here focus on content, communication, and spending rather than a cross-device schedule.
- Test as the child: sign into the child account and try a blocked game, a voice or message action, and a test purchase far enough to trigger the control without completing a charge.
- Review exceptions: approve only games and contacts you have checked. Remove an exception when the child no longer needs it.
- Recheck after changes: repeat the test after a console update, major game update, account change, or new device.
Choosing stricter or more flexible settings
For a young child
Use the lowest suitable age level, keep communication restricted, approve no contacts until you have reviewed them, leave PlayStation’s spending limit at 0, and require approval for every Xbox purchase. Turn on daily schedules for connected devices when play time also needs limits.
For an older child who needs supervised online play
Keep the age and purchase baseline in place, then add narrowly scoped exceptions. On PlayStation, allow a reviewed game rather than raising the global age level. On Xbox, approve specific contacts and retain child-default filtering. Explain why a request was approved or denied so the child knows how to mute, block, and report other players.
For shared consoles
Give every child a distinct account. A single shared child login makes it impossible to apply different age levels, spending allowances, or communication permissions reliably, while using an adult account weakens every restriction described above.
Quick Recap
Key limitations to keep in mind
- Exact labels and app screens can change by region, console generation, account type, or software version.
- Platform controls do not automatically configure a game’s separate account or third-party communication service.
- A purchase made through an adult account is outside the child account’s spending rule.
- Approving an exception changes that child’s access; it does not create a universal safety rating for the game.
- No relevant named statistic or dated quantitative outcome is established for these controls; their value comes from the permissions and approval steps they enforce.
