To restore a Nintendo Switch save, open the game’s Software Menu or go to System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud, select the correct user and backup, then choose Download Save Data. The download replaces the console’s current save for that game, and Nintendo warns that overwritten data cannot be recovered.
You need an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, the same Nintendo Account that created the backup, an internet connection and a game that supports Save Data Cloud. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the major exception: it uses its own island-backup system rather than the ordinary cloud-save menu.
Check these requirements before downloading anything
Cloud restoration is tied to both the Nintendo Account and the individual user profile that made the backup. On the replacement or destination console, select that same user; choosing another profile can make a valid backup appear to be missing.
Recommended Free Tools
- Nintendo Switch Online: An active membership is required to access Save Data Cloud backups. If a membership expires, cloud backups are unavailable during the lapse. Nintendo says access returns when you resubscribe within 180 days of expiration.
- Internet access: Connect the console before opening the cloud-save screen. A download cannot begin without a working connection.
- Correct account and user: Sign in with the Nintendo Account that owns the backup, then choose the matching user profile when Nintendo asks.
- Compatible software: Save Data Cloud support is title-specific. Check the game’s eShop Software Details, its Nintendo Store product page or the game’s Software Menu. Unsupported software displays that it does not support Save Data Cloud backup.
- Avoid relying on a microSD card: Nintendo does not document microSD files as a way to restore game saves. Its supported route is the cloud backup associated with your Nintendo Account.
Nintendo states that local save-data backups are not currently supported on Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch. If no cloud backup exists for a compatible game, there is no general local-backup fallback documented by Nintendo.

What Save Data Cloud can and cannot restore
The service restores the saved progress associated with a supported game, Nintendo Account and user profile. It does not create a second, mergeable copy of your progress. Downloading a backup makes that cloud file the active local save for the selected game.
This matters when two consoles have been used independently. The service does not combine the newer parts of each console. Compare the dates first, decide which copy to keep, and only then download. If the backup is older, uploading the current console file may be safer than downloading.
Cloud availability also depends on the game publisher’s support for the feature. A title can work normally while still excluding Save Data Cloud, so a missing menu is not necessarily a console fault.

Compare the cloud copy with the console copy first
Before selecting a download, open the game’s Save Data Cloud screen and inspect the timestamps for the console save and the cloud backup. The newer copy is usually the one you want to keep.
| What the timestamps show | Action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| The console save is newer | Select Back Up Save Data if you want to preserve it. | Downloading the older cloud copy would replace the newer local progress. |
| The cloud backup is newer | Select Download Save Data. | The cloud copy contains later progress than the console. |
| No backup is listed | Stop and check the account, membership, game compatibility and the latest cloud-backup time. | A missing entry can result from using the wrong user or a title that does not support the service. |
Nintendo’s warning is explicit: “Save data downloaded from the backup will replace the existing save data on the console for that game. The overwritten data cannot be recovered.” Treat the timestamp comparison as a decision point, not as an optional confirmation.
Before you confirm a download
Close the game completely so it is not writing new progress while you inspect the backup. Verify the title, user name and dates one more time, especially on a shared console. If the console copy contains anything you may want later, choose Back Up Save Data while it is still available. Once the replacement is confirmed, Nintendo provides no restore button for the overwritten local file.
A cloud timestamp represents the latest successful upload, not necessarily the last time you played. A brief internet outage, disabled automatic backup or a console that stayed awake offline can leave the cloud copy behind your actual progress.

Wait for the transfer to finish before launching the game. Opening the software while the download is incomplete can leave you looking at the old local state or an interrupted operation.
Method 2: Restore from System Settings
System Settings is useful when you want to browse cloud saves by user or when the game’s own menu does not provide the entry point.
- Open System Settings from the HOME Menu.
- Select Data Management.
- Select Save Data Cloud.
- Choose the user profile associated with the backup.
- Select the game and inspect the backup information and timestamps.
- Choose Download Save Data and confirm.
The result is the same as using the Software Menu: the selected cloud file becomes the console save for that game, replacing the existing local file.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What automatic Save-Data Download does
Automatic Save-Data Download is separate from a manual restore. It must be enabled on each console and is designed to download a newer cloud copy while the console is in Sleep Mode.
- Open System Settings from the HOME Menu.
- Go to Data Management > Save Data Cloud.
- Choose the user profile.
- Select Settings.
- Turn on Automatic Save-Data Download.
- Use Nintendo’s advanced per-software controls if you want to change the behavior for particular games or users.
After enabling it, put the console into Sleep Mode and leave it there until the download completes. The system downloads only when the cloud copy is newer than the console copy. Waking the console immediately can interrupt the process or leave the newer save unapplied.
Automatic backup is a different setting. Nintendo says automatic backup is enabled by default for compatible save files when Nintendo Switch Online starts, but you can change it per game and user. Automatic backup sends the console’s current save to the cloud; Automatic Save-Data Download brings a newer cloud file back to the console.
Why a game may not appear in Save Data Cloud
The title does not support the service
Most Switch 2 and Switch games support Save Data Cloud, but compatibility is decided per title rather than by console model. Check the eShop Software Details, the Nintendo Store listing or the game’s Software Menu. Nintendo’s support wording says unsupported software will state that it does not support Save Data Cloud backup.
You selected the wrong user
Save data belongs to a Nintendo Account and user profile. Return to the cloud-save screen, select the profile that played the game and check again. A family member’s profile or a newly created profile will not show another user’s backup.

Your membership is inactive
Cloud access is suspended during a Nintendo Switch Online membership lapse. Resubscribing within Nintendo’s stated 180-day period restores access to the backups associated with the account.
The backup was never uploaded
Automatic backup can be changed per game and user. If it was disabled, or if the console never had an opportunity to connect and upload, there may be no recent cloud file to download. Check the latest cloud timestamp before assuming that a save has been deleted.
Using the same backup on Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch
Nintendo says a compatible Nintendo Switch software backup can be downloaded on either Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch when you use the same Nintendo Account. This makes a cloud restore practical when replacing a damaged console or moving between the two systems.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons uses island backup instead
Animal Crossing: New Horizons does not support the ordinary Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud function. Nintendo provides a separate island backup feature. It must be enabled inside the game, with an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and a resident linked to a Nintendo Account.
Enable island backup before a console problem
Because this system is separate from ordinary Save Data Cloud, configure it from within Animal Crossing: New Horizons. If island backup was never enabled on the original console, the replacement procedure cannot find an island to restore.
Restore an island to a replacement console
Use this procedure after a console is lost, stolen, damaged or sent for service:
- Make sure the replacement console has internet access.
- Start Animal Crossing: New Horizons with the Nintendo Account that enabled island backup.
- When the Nintendo logo fades to black, hold the − (Minus) button.
- Choose Begin when the island-recovery screen appears.
- Search for the available island backup.
- Select the island you want to restore and confirm recovery.
If a new island already exists on the replacement console, Nintendo instructs you to delete that Animal Crossing save before trying the recovery again. Deleting the new island is irreversible; Nintendo says the new island cannot be recovered after deletion. If the search or restoration fails, contact Nintendo Support through its support flow.

Restoring after replacing a lost or damaged console
For ordinary games, set up the replacement system with the same Nintendo Account, create or select the matching user, connect to the internet and confirm Nintendo Switch Online is active. Then use either restore path above and compare timestamps before downloading. The replacement console does not need the old console’s microSD card to obtain a cloud save.
If you are moving between Switch 2 and Switch, verify that the game is compatible and remember that Switch 2-only features will not be available when the restored save is used on Switch. For Animal Crossing: New Horizons, follow the island-backup recovery process instead of opening Save Data Cloud.
If you are buying replacement hardware for this purpose, choose a Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 that can sign in with the account owning the backup. The hardware alone does not transfer saves: the account, user profile, membership and supported title must all match. Keep the replacement connected while you complete setup and the download, and do not erase a newly created game save until you have confirmed whether it is needed.

Troubleshooting checklist
The download option is missing
- Confirm that you opened the cloud screen for the correct user.
- Check that Nintendo Switch Online is active.
- Verify the title’s Save Data Cloud support in the eShop, Nintendo Store listing or Software Menu.
- Connect to the internet and reopen the menu.
The wrong progress appears after restoration
Recheck the timestamps and the user profile. A cloud backup reflects the last successful upload, not necessarily the last moment you played. If you downloaded an older cloud copy, Nintendo’s warning applies: the overwritten console data cannot be recovered through this process.
Automatic download does not happen
- Confirm Automatic Save-Data Download is enabled for the user on that specific console.
- Put the console into Sleep Mode with an internet connection.
- Leave it asleep until the transfer finishes.
- Check whether the cloud timestamp is actually newer than the console timestamp.
The backup still cannot be found
Check the latest cloud timestamp, automatic-backup setting, internet connection and software compatibility. If the title is Animal Crossing: New Horizons, stop using the normal cloud-save menu and follow the island-backup process instead.
The membership expired
Resubscribe with the Nintendo Account that owned the backup. Nintendo says access returns when you resubscribe within 180 days of expiration; a longer lapse may leave the cloud backup inaccessible.
Preventing a future save-loss problem
- Leave automatic backup enabled for compatible games unless you have a specific reason to manage uploads manually.
- Enable Automatic Save-Data Download on every console you use, then allow Sleep Mode time for synchronization.
- Before changing consoles, open Save Data Cloud and note the latest backup timestamp for important games.
- Keep the Nintendo Account and user profile consistent across consoles.
- For Animal Crossing: New Horizons, enable island backup inside the game; ordinary Save Data Cloud does not protect that island.
- Before accepting any download, decide whether the cloud or console timestamp is newer. There is no undo for the overwritten file.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I restore a Switch save without Nintendo Switch Online?
No ordinary Save Data Cloud restore is available during a membership lapse. Nintendo says access returns if you resubscribe within 180 days of expiration, using the Nintendo Account that owned the backup.
Will downloading a backup merge it with my current save?
No. Download Save Data replaces the current console save for that game. The overwritten data cannot be recovered, so compare the cloud and console timestamps before confirming.

- Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
- Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
Can I use a microSD card to recover my save?
Nintendo does not document microSD files as a save-restoration method. The supported route is the Save Data Cloud backup associated with the correct Nintendo Account and user.
Why is my game missing from Save Data Cloud?
The title may not support the service, you may have selected the wrong user, or Nintendo Switch Online may be inactive. Check the eShop details, Nintendo Store listing or Software Menu, then verify the account and membership.
Can I move a backup between Nintendo Switch and Switch 2?
Yes, compatible Nintendo Switch software backups can be downloaded on either console with the same Nintendo Account. Switch 2-exclusive features or content are not accessible when the save is used on the original Switch.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDoes automatic download run while the console is awake?
Automatic Save-Data Download is designed to work in Sleep Mode. Enable it for the relevant user on that console, connect to the internet and leave the system asleep until the newer cloud copy finishes downloading.
How do I recover Animal Crossing: New Horizons?
Do not use the ordinary Save Data Cloud menu. Enable island backup in the game, then on the replacement console start the game with the linked account, hold the Minus button as the Nintendo logo fades, choose Begin, search for the island and confirm recovery.
What if a new Animal Crossing island is already on the replacement console?
Nintendo instructs you to delete that Animal Crossing save before trying island recovery again. The new island cannot be recovered after deletion, so make that choice only after confirming it is not needed.
The Bottom Line
Use Save Data Cloud only after confirming the correct Nintendo Account, active Nintendo Switch Online membership, game compatibility and the newer timestamp. Manual downloads are available from the Software Menu or System Settings, while automatic downloads run in Sleep Mode. For Animal Crossing: New Horizons, use island backup instead.
