One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match“Restore” can mean either putting your apps and data back from a backup or erasing an iPhone or iPad and reinstalling its software. Choose the backup option to recover saved content; choose a factory or recovery-mode restore when you need to erase the device or cannot start it normally. On a Mac, use Finder; on a Windows PC, use Apple Devices, or iTunes if Apple Devices is not installed.
Choose the right kind of restore
| Option | What it does | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Restore from an iCloud backup | Returns content from a selected existing iCloud backup during device setup. You need an Apple Account, Wi-Fi, and time for content to download. | A suitable iCloud backup exists and you can set up the device. |
| Restore from a computer backup | Returns data stored in a Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes backup. An encrypted backup requires its password; an unencrypted computer backup does not transfer Health and Activity data. | You have a suitable backup on a computer. |
| Factory restore | Erases the device’s information and settings and installs its latest device software. | You want a clean installation or are preparing the device for handoff. |
| Recovery-mode restore | Uses a computer to restore a device that cannot be recovered or recognized normally; it erases data. | Normal startup or restore is not working, or you cannot enter the device passcode. |
Apple’s instructions for these workflows are available for restoring from a backup and restoring a device to factory settings.
Restore from a computer backup
Use this method when the backup you want is saved on a Mac or PC. If the iPhone or iPad has already completed setup, Apple says to erase it before restoring from a backup. Erasing removes current data, so save anything you still need first.
Which app to use
- Mac: Finder.
- Windows PC: Apple Devices. Use iTunes if Apple Devices is not installed.
- Mac with macOS Mojave or earlier: iTunes.
Steps
- Connect the iPhone or iPad to the computer with a USB cable. If prompted, enter the device passcode or tap Trust This Computer.
- Open Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes as appropriate and select the device.
- Choose Restore Backup.
- Select the backup you want, checking its date. Enter the encryption password if prompted.
- Keep the device connected after it restarts until syncing has finished.
Apple’s backup restore instructions cover the computer-app choices and selection flow. If you instead restore from iCloud, choose that backup during setup, sign in to your Apple Account, connect to Wi-Fi, and allow content time to download.

Erase an iPhone or iPad and reinstall its software
A factory restore is not a way to recover a backup: it erases information and settings, then installs the latest software for the device. Make a backup first if you may need the current data. Apple’s computer restore preparation also says to turn off Find My and enter the Apple Account password.
- Update the Mac or PC, and back up the device if possible.
- Turn off Find My on the device and have the Apple Account password available.
- Connect the device to the computer and open Finder on Mac or Apple Devices on PC. Select the device.
- Choose Restore [device] and confirm, then leave the device connected while the process completes.
Apple’s factory restore guidance explains this procedure. Restoring an iPhone does not delete its eSIM. If the device is being handed to someone else, Activation Lock must also be addressed before the new owner can activate it; see Apple’s iTunes for PC instructions.

Reset an iPad when you forgot its passcode
If you cannot unlock the iPad, Apple’s computer reset process erases its data and settings, including the passcode, so you can set it up again. Apple lists a Mac or Windows PC, an internet connection, and a cable that can charge the iPad as requirements; its guidance allows up to 60 minutes for this process. On Windows, use Apple Devices.
- Power off the iPad.
- Connect it to the computer while holding the button specified for your iPad model. Continue holding until the recovery-mode screen showing a computer and cable appears. Button sequences differ between iPad models with and without a Home button; follow Apple’s device-specific instructions rather than applying one sequence to every iPad.
- In Finder or Apple Devices, select the iPad and choose Restore.
- If the software download takes more than 15 minutes and the iPad leaves recovery mode, let the download finish, then put the iPad back into recovery mode and repeat the restore step.
Follow Apple’s iPad passcode reset instructions for the exact button sequence for your model.

When to use recovery mode for other restore problems
Recovery mode is a troubleshooting route to a computer restore, not a way to preserve data. Apple says to consider it if the computer does not recognize the iPad, the Apple logo remains on screen for several minutes without a progress bar, the device displays a recovery screen, or Recovery Assistant repeatedly starts without recovering the device.
- Update the Mac, or update Apple Devices or iTunes on the PC.
- Use Apple’s model-specific instructions to connect the device and enter recovery mode.
- Select the device in Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes and choose Restore. This erases the device.
See Apple’s recovery mode guidance for the symptoms and steps.

If the computer does not recognize the device
- Confirm the cable can transfer data and charge the device; a charge-only cable may not be suitable for a computer restore. Check that the connectors fit the device and computer. A new cable is not necessarily required.
- Unlock the device and respond to any passcode or Trust This Computer prompt when available.
- Update macOS, Apple Devices, or iTunes, then reconnect and try again.
- If the device remains unrecognized or meets Apple’s recovery-mode symptoms above, use recovery mode. If a computer reset still will not work, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
For backup transfers, Apple notes that an unencrypted computer backup omits Health and Activity data; see its backup transfer guidance.
