First identify which Echo Spot you have: the original 2017 model (codename “rook”) and the 2024 release do not share the same documented recovery paths. If the device still opens Settings, use Amazon’s reset steps for the confirmed model. If a modified 2017 Spot is stuck in Amazon Recovery, do not assume a factory reset will reinstall firmware; the available computer-based recovery guidance is community-maintained, model- and firmware-specific, and not a guaranteed repair.
Identify the generation and what the screen shows
Before trying another reset or connecting a computer, note the model generation, the current screen state, and—if accessible—the exact Fire OS version. Amazon’s current Echo Spot reset article applies specifically to the 2024 release. The community recovery material discussed below concerns the original 2017 Echo Spot, codename “rook.” Do not transfer button combinations, firmware instructions, or recovery assumptions between them.
- Normal interface: Settings is available, so you can use the applicable Amazon on-device reset route.
- Amazon Recovery: the device displays a recovery menu or repeatedly returns to it after restarting.
- Unknown model or state: you cannot establish the generation, screen state, or firmware version. Avoid model-specific low-level steps until these are confirmed.
Try Amazon’s on-device restart and reset first
Amazon’s “Reset Your Echo Spot (2024 Release)” recommends restarting before a factory reset: unplug the power adapter, wait a few seconds, and reconnect it. If the Spot still does not work normally and you can reach Settings, choose Settings > Device Options > Factory Reset.
The 2024 reset flow offers a choice to retain smart-home device connections or reset to factory defaults and erase settings. When the reset finishes, the screen displays a setup QR code for guided setup in the Alexa app. This documented procedure resets settings and starts setup again; Amazon’s article does not say it reinstalls firmware changed by a jailbreak or Android installation.

General button reset for Echo devices with a screen
Amazon’s separate “Reset Your Echo Devices with a Screen” states that its instructions also work with Echo Spot. It recommends unplugging the power adapter for 15 seconds before retrying. For its button procedure, hold the Microphones & Camera Disable/Enable button and Volume Down until the Amazon logo appears—about 15 seconds—then follow the on-screen prompts. Its menu route is Settings > Device Options > About this Device > Reset to Factory Defaults.
This is a general screen-device article, not a reason to treat one reset path as the newest or only path for every Echo Spot generation. Use the 2024-specific instructions when they match your model and are available; do not treat either settings reset or button reset as proof that altered firmware has been restored.

If the 2017 Spot is stuck in Amazon Recovery
The community-maintained techo5-spot hardware documentation describes computer-based recovery and development work for the original 2017 Spot using its micro-USB port. This is independent community guidance, not Amazon support. Its documented tooling table names Fire OS versions 5.5.6.9, 5.5.5.2, and 5.5.3.4 and says that the tooling refuses other versions. These are project-specific, time-sensitive constraints, not a general compatibility list for Echo devices; check the current documentation and the exact firmware on the device before proceeding.
The documentation also reports that Fire OS may recreate Amazon recovery on boot and that changing system files caused a boot failure on the unit tested. Its findings are a reason not to improvise partition writes, assume a factory reset repairs a modified boot chain, or use commands and flash images intended for another Echo model. Although the document describes stock Fire OS on the 2017 Spot as having a 2016-era Android base, that does not establish compatibility with a generic Android image.

Low-level recovery can erase user data or make a device harder to recover; the project describes partition changes and a userdata wipe as part of its process. Only consider this route if the device is confirmed as the original 2017 model and its firmware matches current project guidance. A computer and a data-capable micro-USB connection are relevant to that community route; neither is part of Amazon’s built-in reset steps. A cable alone is not a fix.
Recovery menu option reported in one case
In a 2022 Amazon forum thread, an owner described repeated restarts into Amazon Recovery after trying a hard reset. An Amazon staff member suggested choosing “Reboot system now.” This is a dated, individual case, not a universal fix or a documented firmware-reinstallation procedure. If that exact option is present, trying it once is a low-risk step; if the device loops again, stop repeating resets and seek model-specific support.

When to stop and get model-specific help
- If you cannot confirm whether the Spot is the 2017 or 2024 release, do not try recovery instructions intended for either one until you identify it.
- If firmware is unknown or does not match the current 2017 project documentation, do not connect tools to write partitions or try generic Android recovery commands.
- If the device continues looping after a single “Reboot system now” attempt, stop repeating reset attempts. Contact Amazon device support or consult the current techo5-spot documentation if it is confirmed to be the original model.
