Start with a non-destructive power reset: switch the TV off, unplug it for about 60 seconds, reconnect power, and test it. If the TV starts normally, reconnect Wi‑Fi or Ethernet in its Network/Internet menu and install any offered software update. Use a factory reset only when the problem remains; use a button-based reset or recovery mode only when the menus are unavailable or the TV is stuck.
What “disabled” means and the safest recovery order
A smart TV can appear disabled for several different reasons. Wi‑Fi may have been turned off, an Ethernet cable may have been removed, a router may be offline, an app or update may have crashed, or a reset may have left the TV waiting at first-time setup. These conditions need different remedies. A network outage does not normally mean that the TV operating system has been erased.
Work through recovery in this order:
- Record the brand, complete model number and, if shown, the operating-system or webOS/Google TV version. The reset method and button sequence can differ between otherwise similar TVs.
- Perform a power reset before changing settings. This clears temporary faults without deleting saved information.
- If the home screen and Settings open, reconnect Wi‑Fi or Ethernet, restart the TV, and check for an official software update.
- If the menu is usable but the fault continues, use the manufacturer’s normal factory-reset command.
- If Settings cannot be opened, the TV has no usable remote, or it is trapped in a logo or reboot loop, use the exact forced-reset, hardware-reset or platform-recovery procedure for that model.
Do not hold a recessed button or select a factory reset simply because the TV has lost internet access. Those actions can erase accounts, applications, channels and preferences.

Find the model label on the rear panel, stand area or original packaging. If the TV still reaches a menu, look under an About, Support, System or Product Information screen. Write down the model exactly, including suffixes; a procedure for one regional or screen-size variant may not apply to another. Note whether the interface is Roku TV, Sony Android TV or Google TV, LG webOS, Samsung Smart TV, or another platform.

- Transfer speeds up to 100MB/s: Based on internal testing, performance may vary depending upon the host device, interface, and usage conditions. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes
- Plug and Play: Widely compatible with USB Type-C smartphones, tablets, laptops, Macs, and traditional Type-A devices, no software installation required. The 360° swivel design allows for easy switching between connectors without the hassle of losing a cap
- Durable & Compact: The Lexar D40E USB memory stick features a metal enclosure, withstands temperatures from 0° to 50° C (32°F to 122°F), and is lightweight at 26g with dimensions of 70.4 x 16.9 x 11.7mm
- Security & Warranty: Securely protects files using an advanced security software solution with 256-bit AES encryption. Backed by a Lexar 3-year limited warranty
- Keep a remote available. Normal menu resets require the TV remote. A phone remote may not work until the TV and phone are on the same network, so it cannot be relied on when Wi‑Fi is disabled.
- Separate TV and network symptoms. If broadcast or HDMI video works but streaming apps report that they are offline, test the router with another device and check the TV’s network status before resetting the TV software.
- Prepare for data loss. A factory reset can remove signed-in accounts, downloaded apps, channels, parental controls, camera-device data, wireless-network settings and other customer settings.
Reset levels and what each one changes
| Recovery level | When to use it | Menu or equipment needed | Data and software effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Power reset | TV is slow, frozen, has a temporary network or app fault, or behaved incorrectly after standby. | Physical power button or remote; wall outlet. | No intentional deletion of settings or saved information. The TV is unplugged for about 60 seconds and restarted. |
| Network reconnect | TV works but Wi‑Fi or Ethernet was disabled, forgotten or disconnected. | Settings menu, Wi‑Fi password or Ethernet cable. | Changes connection settings only; it does not reinstall the operating system. |
| Normal factory reset | Settings open but persistent software errors remain after a power reset and network check. | Remote and the manufacturer’s menu command. | Extensive deletion of user data and configuration; returns the TV toward out-of-box state. |
| Forced or hardware reset | Menus are inaccessible, the remote is unavailable, or software crashes during startup. | Model-specific buttons; some procedures still require a remote. | Usually the same broad data loss as a factory reset. A wrong button hold can enter a deeper recovery state. |
| Platform recovery or USB recovery | TV is stuck on a logo, repeatedly reboots, or cannot obtain recovery files over Wi‑Fi. | Platform-specific recovery controls; on supported Roku models, a USB flash drive containing the exact recovery files. | Clears data and reloads platform software. Files and steps are model-specific. |
Step 1: perform a non-destructive power reset
Sony specifies one minute unplugged, and Roku specifies 60 seconds. The same interval is a useful baseline for other brands.
- Turn the TV off with the remote or the TV’s physical power control.
- Unplug the TV power cord from the wall outlet, not merely from a switched-off power strip if that strip may still be supplying standby power.
- Wait approximately 60 seconds. Do not repeatedly press the remote during the wait.
- Reconnect the power cord directly to a known-working outlet and turn the TV on.
- Allow the home screen to finish loading, then test an HDMI input and a built-in app. If the TV is responsive, continue with the network steps below.
This procedure is deliberately first because it can clear a temporary crash without affecting TV settings or saved information. If the set immediately returns to a logo loop, proceed to the platform-specific recovery section rather than repeating the power cycle indefinitely.
Step 2: reconnect Wi‑Fi or Ethernet when Settings opens
Wi‑Fi
- Open the TV’s Settings menu and choose the section labelled Network, Internet or a similar connection heading.
- Choose wireless or Wi‑Fi, select the home network’s name, and enter its password exactly, including capitalization.
- Wait for the TV to report a connection to the network. Then open a built-in streaming app or the software-update screen to verify internet access.
Ethernet
- Connect a known-good Ethernet cable from the router to the TV’s LAN port.
- In the same Network/Internet area, choose wired or Ethernet if the TV does not select it automatically.
- Check that the TV receives an address and reports internet access. If another device also cannot reach the internet, troubleshoot the router or internet service before resetting the TV.
If the network was intentionally disabled
Re-enabling the network does not restore erased apps or accounts; it only gives the TV connectivity. After reconnecting, accept any required terms, sign in again if prompted, and run the manufacturer’s software update command. Avoid changing several network settings at once, so you can identify whether the failure is the TV, the wireless password, the router or the internet service.
Brand procedures when the menu is available
Roku TV
A Roku factory reset can be started from the TV’s Settings/System menus when they are accessible. It returns the set to the initial setup screen, so channels, apps, accounts and preferences must be configured again. Use this only after a 60-second power reset and a network check.

Sony Android TV and Google TV
Sony’s normal Factory Data Reset is performed through the TV’s help or settings menus. Sony states that it removes all customer settings, including the Google account, apps, channels, camera-device data, parental lock and wireless-network settings. Afterward, the TV starts the initial setup process. Complete that process before judging whether network or app problems are fixed.
Sony describes “Restart or Power Reset” as the first step because it can resolve many issues without affecting TV settings or saved information. Treat the factory command as a separate, destructive action.
LG webOS
On webOS 5.0 and newer, the usual path is Settings > All Settings > Support > Reset to Initial Settings. Older webOS versions generally place the command under Settings > All Settings > General. Exact labels vary by webOS version and model. Some LG sets offer Reset all except network settings; choose that narrower option only when it is displayed and you specifically need to preserve the connection configuration.
Recommended Free Tools
LG describes a factory reset as reverting all settings to how they were out of the box. Expect to repeat first-time setup and restore apps, accounts, picture preferences and parental controls.

Samsung Smart TV
Samsung provides a Reset command for TV settings, but it is unavailable while an app such as Netflix, YouTube or Hulu is open. Exit the app to the TV interface first. The exact menu path and default or requested PIN depend on the model, so use that model’s Samsung support page rather than guessing a code. Confirm that the problem is not a router or internet-service failure before using Reset.
When Settings is inaccessible: forced and hardware resets
Sony forced reset
Sony’s forced-reset procedure is intended for inaccessible menus, a missing or unusable remote, or crashes that began after an update. The button sequence varies with the number and location of buttons on the TV. Do not substitute a sequence from another Sony model. Identify the exact model first and follow its official button instructions; some procedures require a compatible remote for later choices.
A forced reset is a last resort because it removes the same categories of personal data as a normal factory reset. If the TV has no usable remote and the model’s procedure asks for remote input, obtain a compatible replacement or universal remote, or contact Sony support.

On supported Roku TVs, locate the reset button on the back or bottom. If it is a pinhole, use a straightened paperclip and hold it for about 10 seconds. The TV should restart at the initial setup screen. Roku warns that holding the button too long can enter Recovery Mode, so release it at the specified interval unless you intentionally need recovery.

Logo screen, reboot loop or failed setup
Roku recovery mode
If a Roku TV remains on its logo or loops during setup, first unplug it for 60 seconds and try the supported hardware reset. If that does not resolve the problem, Roku Recovery Mode is a deeper operation that clears data and reloads Roku software.
- Use the recessed reset control on a supported model and hold it for at least 20 seconds, following the model’s recovery instructions.
- When the recovery interface appears, select the language and choose Wireless if the TV can connect to Wi‑Fi.
- If Wi‑Fi recovery is unavailable, use Roku’s documented USB recovery method with a flash drive and the recovery files specified for the exact model. Do not copy files intended for a different TV.
- After software reload, complete initial setup and install any offered update.
A USB flash drive is useful here only when the model’s Roku instructions support it. The drive, file set and preparation requirements are model-specific; generic firmware files can make recovery fail.
Other platforms
Android TV, Google TV, LG webOS and Samsung sets do not share Roku’s recovery process. If one of these TVs loops at startup, use the manufacturer’s exact forced-reset or service-recovery instructions for the model. Do not apply a Roku, Sony, LG or Samsung sequence to another brand.

Can you restore TV software without internet?
Yes, but the answer depends on what “restore” means. A power reset and a normal factory reset run locally and do not require internet access. They can clear temporary faults or return the TV to its initial software state, but they do not download a newer firmware version.
Firmware reinstallation is platform- and model-specific. Roku documents USB recovery for supported TVs when Recovery Mode cannot connect to Wi‑Fi. That process still requires the correct recovery files and exact model instructions, normally obtained using another internet-connected device. For other brands, offline update availability, file format and USB requirements vary; do not assume that a generic USB update will work.
After any reset, smart services may remain unavailable until you finish setup, reconnect the network, accept required terms, sign in again and run the official firmware update. A reset cannot repair a failed router, expired internet service or incorrect Wi‑Fi password.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsNo remote, no menu: choosing the next action
| Observed condition | Recommended action | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| TV powers on and Settings opens | Reconnect Wi‑Fi/Ethernet, restart, then update. Factory-reset only if the fault persists. | Reset deletes user data and is not a network diagnostic. |
| TV powers on but Settings cannot be opened | Use the exact model’s forced-reset or hardware-button procedure. | Expect extensive data loss; the sequence may still require a remote. |
| TV is stuck at a logo or repeatedly restarts | Power-cycle, then use platform recovery. Roku may offer Recovery Mode and USB recovery. | Recovery reloads software and clears data; model support is required. |
| Remote is missing or unusable | Obtain a compatible replacement or universal remote if the reset asks for remote input. | A phone remote may not pair while the TV is offline. |
| Reset completes but apps remain offline | Finish initial setup, reconnect the network, accept terms, sign in and update firmware. | Check the router and internet service separately. |
What to do after a successful reset
- Select the language, region and time settings shown by the first-time setup wizard.
- Connect Ethernet or join the correct Wi‑Fi network. Keep the password available.
- Accept required service terms and privacy prompts.
- Sign in to the TV platform account and reinstall or enable the apps you use.
- Rescan broadcast channels if your model uses an antenna or tuner.
- Recreate parental controls, picture and sound preferences, input labels and sleep timers.
- Open the software-update screen and install the official update, keeping the TV powered until it reports completion.
- Test a built-in app, an HDMI source and the remote before moving the TV or disconnecting power.
Common mistakes and recovery
- Resetting because streaming is down: Test another device on the same network first. A router or ISP outage will survive a TV reset.
- Using the wrong model’s button sequence: Stop and verify the complete model number. Button locations and hold times are not universal.
- Holding a Roku pinhole too long: The TV can enter Recovery Mode instead of performing the short hardware reset. Follow the recovery screen and model instructions.
- Expecting a factory reset to preserve accounts: Record app logins and parental-control choices before resetting; the reset removes them.
- Installing generic USB firmware: Use USB recovery only when the manufacturer documents it for that model and supplies matching files.
- Assuming a reset finished because the screen went blank: Leave the TV powered through the complete wizard or update and verify that it reaches the home screen.
When manufacturer support is the right next step
Contact the manufacturer with the exact model, serial number if requested, operating-system version, symptoms, and the recovery steps already attempted. Support is especially important when the TV cannot display a recovery screen, repeatedly loses power, reports storage or firmware errors, or requires a service-only procedure. Do not keep forcing resets on a set that is overheating, emitting unusual sounds or showing signs of power-supply failure; those are hardware-safety issues rather than network configuration problems.
