Choose the restore method by what the backup contains: use cPanel’s Backup or Backup Wizard for a partial backup, use File and Directory Restoration for a single file or folder when your host has enabled it, and ask your hosting provider or WHM administrator to restore a full account. Check the backup type and destination before restoring because file-level restores can overwrite existing files.

Choose the right cPanel restore method

What you need to restore Method Key requirement or limitation
A backed-up part of the account, such as the home directory or a database cPanel Backup or Backup Wizard → Restore You need the matching partial-backup file. Your host may disable these interfaces. See cPanel Backup documentation and the Backup Wizard documentation.
One file or directory from a server snapshot File and Directory Restoration Your provider must enable and configure the feature. It uses local backups and overwrites existing files at the restore path. See File and Directory Restoration documentation.
A complete cPanel account from a full backup archive Ask your host or a WHM administrator to restore it A regular cPanel account cannot automatically restore a full backup. WHM access and a supported archive are required. See WHM Backup Restoration documentation.
Only the website files in public_html from a full archive Extract the archive and upload the folder’s contents with File Manager This is manual recovery of website files, not a full account restore; it does not restore databases or mail configuration. See cPanel Backup documentation.

Restore a partial backup in cPanel

Use this method when you have a partial backup file for a supported component, such as a home directory or database. The backup file must match the restore type you select.

  1. Sign in to cPanel and open Backup or Backup Wizard.
  2. Choose Restore.
  3. Select the restore type that matches the backup file, such as Home Directory or the relevant database type.
  4. Select the backup file on your computer, then choose Upload to start the restore.

The Backup Wizard restores a portion of a site from an existing partial backup; file extensions vary by backup type. It cannot automatically restore a full backup file. See the Backup Wizard documentation.

Restore one file or directory from a server snapshot

This option is for individual files or folders in server backups—not an archive you have stored only on your computer. Your hosting provider must enable the feature through the server profile and configure account backups in WHM. The interface reads local backup sources, so a remote backup must first be transferred to the server.

  1. In cPanel, open File and Directory Restoration. If the feature is missing, ask your hosting provider whether it is available for your account.
  2. Browse the home directory, or select Enter a path and enter a path relative to your account’s home directory, such as public_html.
  3. Select Show Backups, then choose the snapshot version you want.
  4. Select Restore and confirm after checking the path and snapshot date.

The interface reports whether the restore succeeded or failed. It restores deleted files and overwrites files that already exist at the selected destination. See cPanel’s File and Directory Restoration documentation.

Restore a full cPanel account

A full-account archive cannot be automatically restored from a regular cPanel account. Contact your hosting provider or a WHM administrator. WHM’s restoration tools work with local backups or configured remote FTP destinations; for cpmove archives, use Transfer or Restore a cPanel Account. See the WHM Backup Restoration documentation and Transfer or Restore a cPanel Account documentation.

Requirements for an archive-based WHM restore

  • Place the archive or cpmove file in /home and use WHM’s Transfer or Restore a cPanel Account interface.
  • Do not create the account you are restoring in advance, and do not rename the backup archive. WHM documents accepted archive names and locations.
  • Ensure the server has available disk space of at least twice the archive size for extraction.
  • After restoration, set up the account’s two-factor authentication again; that configuration does not carry over.

These requirements are described in the WHM account transfer and restore guide.

Recover only the website files from a full backup

If you have a full .tar.gz archive but need only the site files, manual recovery may be appropriate. Extract the archive, locate homedir/public_html, and upload its contents to the account’s public_html folder using File Manager. This restores that folder’s files only—not databases, mail settings, or the rest of the account. See cPanel Backup documentation.

If you cannot find the restore option

  • Backup or Backup Wizard is missing: your provider may have disabled the interface. Ask whether it is available for your account.
  • File and Directory Restoration is missing: the provider must enable and configure it; it is not available on every account.
  • You need a full-account restore: request help from the provider or a WHM administrator, because cPanel’s account interface cannot perform that automatic restore.

Interface availability, backup locations, retention, and account privileges depend on the hosting provider’s configuration. The cited cPanel documentation covers current versions as noted on its pages; your host’s setup determines which options you can use.
