To restart Hulu, fully close the app—not just the show or stream you’re watching—then open Hulu again. If it remains unresponsive, restart the device, check for Hulu and system updates, and investigate the internet connection. The exact controls depend on your device; the verified steps below cover iPhone and iPad plus Roku, with guidance for other platforms.
Close and reopen Hulu first
Exit the stream, fully close Hulu, and launch it again. Hulu recommends closing and reopening the app as a playback troubleshooting step in its Cloud DVR troubleshooting guidance. That advice is given in a Cloud DVR context, so it is a useful first step for a playback problem, not a guarantee that every Hulu issue has the same cause.
On iPhone or iPad
- Open the app switcher using the gesture or button for your iPhone or iPad model.
- Find Hulu and swipe it away to close it.
- Return to the Home Screen or App Library and open Hulu again.
Apple recommends force-closing and reopening an app that stops responding. The app-switcher gesture varies by model and iOS or iPadOS version; follow Apple’s current instructions if you need help finding it.
Restart the device if Hulu is still stuck
A device restart is different from closing Hulu: it restarts the TV, phone, or streaming player itself. Use the device’s normal system controls rather than looking for one universal Hulu button sequence.

On a Roku device
- Press Home, then go to Settings > System > Power > System restart.
- If there is no Power submenu, go to Settings > System > System restart.
- Confirm the restart if prompted.
Roku also describes unplugging the device from power for at least 10 seconds, then reconnecting it. Roku Support calls system restart its least invasive reset method and says it does not affect settings. See Roku’s system-restart instructions.
On iPhone or iPad
If closing and reopening Hulu does not resolve an app that is frozen, unexpectedly closing, or refusing to open, Apple recommends restarting the device. The button sequence depends on the model; use Apple’s device-specific restart guidance rather than assuming the same controls apply to every iPhone and iPad.

On other TVs and streaming devices
Use the restart option in the device’s own settings or the manufacturer’s support instructions. Menus and app behavior vary across smart TVs, consoles, streaming sticks, and other platforms. Hulu’s app and system update help gives examples of platform-specific menus, but it is not a universal force-close guide.
Check for Hulu and device updates
If the app keeps freezing or playback trouble returns, check both the Hulu app and the device’s system software. Hulu’s update instructions, dated Aug. 28, 2026, describe checking for app updates through the relevant app store on iPhone or iPad and checking system updates in device settings. For Roku, the documented path is Settings > System > System Update > Check Now. Labels and update availability can vary by model and software version; follow Hulu’s platform-specific update guidance.

Clear cache or app data only if your device offers the option
Hulu recommends clearing cache and data through device settings where that option is available. Cache consists of temporary files; clearing it may free space. The menu and effects depend on the platform, and clearing app data may reset local app state or sign you out. Read the device’s confirmation prompt before proceeding. Hulu describes this step in its Cloud DVR troubleshooting guidance; it is not a universal first step or an option on every device.
Check the connection if Hulu opens but playback still fails
If Hulu launches but a stream buffers, freezes, or will not play, check that the device is connected to the internet. Then use Hulu’s playback troubleshooting page for connection checks and its streaming-issues contact page for relevant help topics and support options. The contact page reports live support 24 hours a day, seven days a week; check the page for current availability.

When the steps differ by device
Hulu is available across multiple kinds of devices, but the exact app controls, settings menus, and feature support depend on the platform and model. Hulu’s supported-device article, dated Feb. 5, 2026, lists examples including phones and tablets, TVs, streaming players, consoles, and Hulu.com for add-on programming. That list is not a compatibility guarantee for every feature or app version. If you cannot find a force-close or restart option, consult the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific model and software.
