A YouTube stream’s auto-start and auto-stop settings do not restart OBS when the OBS application crashes. To recover automatically, you need an external process supervisor that can relaunch OBS—and you must test whether it can handle your system’s actual failure mode, including a crash dialog that leaves OBS running but unresponsive. For a more resilient broadcast, prepare a separate backup encoder and verify that YouTube’s player switches to it.
What can—and cannot—restart OBS
YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop controls govern whether the encoder starts or stops the broadcast. They do not relaunch the OBS application after it crashes. A process supervisor can watch OBS and attempt to start it again when it exits, but that is only one part of recovery: you must also confirm OBS reconnects and that YouTube receives the feed.
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a credential: do not expose it in logs, screenshots, or scripts. YouTube documents how to connect an encoder and manage stream settings, but its guidance does not establish a built-in OBS crash-restart feature.
Set up and test an automatic OBS restart
There is no universal, verified restart command or setting to give here: the supported supervision method depends on your operating system and OBS version. Use a process supervisor appropriate to your setup, and verify its behavior before relying on it during a children’s stream.

- Prepare a test broadcast. Create an unlisted or otherwise suitable test stream, connect OBS to YouTube with the correct server URL and stream key, and wait for the Live Control Room preview. Follow YouTube’s encoder flow and verify the broadcast state rather than assuming that a successful OBS launch means you are live.
- Test a clean OBS exit. Close OBS normally and check whether your supervisor detects the process exit and relaunches the application as intended.
- Test a crash, including a possible dialog. OBS community users have reported crash dialogs that leave the application waiting for interaction. If OBS remains open behind a dialog, a supervisor that only restarts after process exit may do nothing. This is a reported failure mode, not behavior established for every current OBS build; test the OBS version and operating system you will use.
- Check the recovered feed. After a relaunch, confirm the intended scene and profile are loaded, audio and video are present, and YouTube’s Live Control Room shows the expected incoming stream and live state. YouTube advises checking the preview before going live.
- Rehearse the whole recovery path. Test before the real event and monitor stream health during the broadcast. Do not depend on an unverified script, plug-in, command-line option, or crash-dialog workaround as though it were an official OBS feature.
For higher continuity, test a separate backup encoder
A supervisor tries to restore the original OBS instance; a backup encoder is a separate continuity plan. It does not repair crashed OBS, and it needs its own preparation. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover in advance, including by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then verifying that the player rolls over to the backup.
- Set up the backup encoder and confirm it can send a feed to the intended YouTube broadcast.
- During a test, stop the primary encoder or disconnect its network cable, as YouTube recommends for failover testing.
- Watch the YouTube player and Live Control Room to confirm the backup feed takes over and that audio and video remain usable.
- Keep monitoring audio and video quality during the event; a connected encoder alone does not prove the viewer-facing stream has recovered.
Protect the stream key
If the key is exposed, regenerate it in YouTube’s Live Control Room and update the encoder that uses it. YouTube’s stream-key guidance explains the key’s role in connecting an encoder to the stream; keep it out of screenshots, public logs, and scripts that others can access.
