OBS Automatic Reconnect does not restart OBS after the application crashes. It retries a dropped streaming connection while OBS is still running. To relaunch OBS after a process crash, you need a separate restart mechanism provided by the computer’s operating system; the right setup depends on whether you use Windows, macOS, or Linux. YouTube’s Auto-start setting can affect what happens when encoder data returns, but it does not relaunch OBS.
This distinction applies in India as well as elsewhere: the recovery controls described here are OBS, operating-system, and YouTube controls, not India-specific settings.
Identify what failed before changing settings
“The stream stopped” can describe three different failures. The recovery method depends on which one occurred.
| Failure | What is still running? | Relevant control |
|---|---|---|
| Network connection to YouTube drops | OBS remains open and functioning | OBS Automatic Reconnect |
| OBS crashes or exits | The OBS process is no longer running | An operating-system process supervisor or equivalent automation must start OBS again |
| YouTube broadcast behavior changes | The encoder feed may start or stop, but YouTube’s broadcast controls determine the platform response | YouTube Studio Auto-start and Auto-stop |
OBS’s overview guide describes Automatic Reconnect as a connection-recovery setting; it does not describe it as a way to restart the OBS application. YouTube’s live stream settings likewise govern encoder-to-platform behavior, not computer processes.

If OBS is still open, check Automatic Reconnect
For a temporary network interruption where OBS is still running, open OBS Settings > Advanced > Automatic Reconnect and check the reconnect setting. This addresses a lost connection; it will not help if OBS has exited or stopped functioning.
Test the connection-recovery behavior before an important stream. OBS recommends testing the setup before the first live stream. A user discussion may describe wanting OBS to “automatically reconnect to the YouTube stream and resume the stream when the network returns,” but that wording is about a network disconnection, not necessarily an application crash. Community reports are not a guarantee that the broadcast, URL, or recording will continue unchanged.

If OBS crashes, arrange an external restart
A true crash requires something outside OBS to notice that the process ended and launch it again. That might be an operating-system process supervisor or another OS-level automation, but the exact instructions differ by platform. Because the operating system is not specified here, there is no single accurate scheduler, service, or script to give.
- Confirm it is a process failure. Check whether OBS has actually closed or stopped responding, rather than merely showing a connection problem.
- Choose a restart mechanism for your operating system. Configure it to detect an exited OBS process and start OBS again. Use platform-specific guidance for your Windows, macOS, or Linux version; do not substitute OBS Automatic Reconnect for process supervision.
- Decide whether recovery after a full computer reboot is also required. Restarting OBS after a crash and starting it after the computer reboots are separate requirements. The needed setup depends on your host system and whether it should start unattended.
- Test the whole chain before relying on it. Verify that the supervisor detects an OBS exit, relaunches the application, and that the encoder feed behaves as intended in YouTube Studio. Do not assume that restarting OBS preserves the same broadcast, video URL, or recording continuity.
Check YouTube’s response to a returning encoder feed
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, review the stream’s Auto-start and Auto-stop selections if your intended workflow depends on YouTube starting or stopping the broadcast in response to encoder activity. YouTube says these selections can be copied when reusing stream settings. They control platform behavior when encoder data starts or stops; they do not monitor or relaunch a crashed OBS process.

Your stream key is the credential OBS uses to send the feed for YouTube to accept. Keep it private: do not show it in screenshots or expose it in scripts. If you reuse stream settings, verify that OBS has the correct key and that the relevant YouTube options match the behavior you want.

Before a real event, test with audio and video activity similar to the planned stream. YouTube recommends choosing a quality your internet connection can reliably sustain and monitoring stream health. Its encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265, and AV1 video codec options, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. These are encoder-setting details, not requirements for restarting a crashed process. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

- OBS is open, but the stream disconnected: Check OBS Settings > Advanced > Automatic Reconnect. Confirm the network connection and wait to see whether OBS reconnects.
- OBS has exited: Automatic Reconnect cannot launch an application that is no longer running. Check the external supervisor’s configuration and logs, and verify that it can start OBS on your system.
- OBS relaunched, but YouTube does not respond as expected: Review Auto-start and Auto-stop in the Live Control Room, confirm the correct stream is selected, and check that OBS is using the intended stream key.
- The encoder will not start or the stream looks unhealthy: Follow YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance: update the encoder, inspect its picture and sound output, check encoder errors and CPU load, assess outbound internet connectivity, and update the stream key in the encoder if the start error indicates that it is needed.
- Performance is poor: OBS identifies GPU overload and resource contention as possible performance issues. Reducing the workload may help; that possibility alone does not establish what caused a particular crash. See OBS encoding performance troubleshooting.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream of uploaded videos rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps the stream running without a computer or home internet connection staying on; supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot; and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. In India, UPI is available. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
