Use an external process supervisor to relaunch FFmpeg when it exits; FFmpeg’s FIFO output recovery can help with some temporary output failures while the process is still running. They address different failure layers, and neither can fix every cause of a stream stopping. After recovery, verify the feed and event in YouTube Live Control Room—an FFmpeg process that is running does not prove viewers can see a healthy live stream.
Choose recovery for the failure you have
First determine whether FFmpeg has exited or is still running. A supervisor can start a new FFmpeg process after an exit. The FIFO pseudo-muxer can attempt recovery from certain output failures without restarting FFmpeg. Neither approach guarantees that a YouTube event will resume unattended; the result depends on the command, output protocol, event configuration, and failure cause.

For each method, check how failure is detected, what state survives a restart, what gap viewers may see, where logs and alerts go, and whether someone must intervene in Live Control Room. Test the actual channel and command rather than assuming the whole chain recovers automatically.
Set up a supervisor to restart FFmpeg after an exit
On Linux, use a service manager such as systemd or a small wrapper that runs the real FFmpeg command, observes its exit, waits, and tries again. Configure a sensible delay and a start-rate limit or alert. Without those safeguards, a permanent error can cause rapid, unobserved restart attempts.

- Make the command suitable for background operation. Retain your actual input, stream mappings, codecs, and YouTube destination. For a background FFmpeg task, the FFmpeg FAQ recommends
-nostdinor redirecting standard input so console-input checks do not suspend the process. For example, the FAQ showsffmpeg -nostdin -i INPUT OUTPUT; this is a placeholder illustration, not a complete YouTube publishing command. - Run the command under a supervisor. Configure your chosen service manager or wrapper to launch the command and retry after an exit, with a delay and a limit or alert for repeated failures. Consult documentation matching your Linux distribution and service-manager version; a universal unit file or exact directive is not established here.
- Keep logs and diagnose the exit. Record FFmpeg’s output and the exit status, and inspect them before treating each restart as a fix. If the same error repeats, correct its cause rather than hiding it behind retries.
- Test failure and recovery on the actual stream. Confirm what happens when the process exits, how the supervisor behaves, and whether the intended YouTube event receives the restarted feed. Do this with the channel and configuration you plan to use.
Consider FIFO recovery for transient output failures
FFmpeg’s FIFO pseudo-muxer separates encoding and muxing with a queue and can attempt recovery after certain output failures. The documentation includes this RTMP illustration:

-attempt_recoverydefaults to false in the documented FIFO options; enabling it asks FIFO to try recovery.-recovery_wait_timehas a documented default of five seconds. The example sets it to one second; that is not a universal recommendation.max_recovery_attemptsis documented as zero, meaning unlimited, by default. Consider whether indefinite retries are appropriate for your monitoring and failure scenario.- The FIFO queue default is documented as 60 packets. Queue behavior and available options should be checked against your installed version.
-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1lets processing continue without waiting for the queue to clear, at the cost of dropping queued packets. That can create omissions or gaps in the stream.
FIFO recovery is not process supervision: if FFmpeg exits, an external supervisor is still needed to launch it again.
Do not treat HTTP reconnect flags as a general publishing fix
FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol options cover specified HTTP input situations, such as reconnecting around EOF or network errors, and can include status-code and retry controls. Their applicability depends on the protocol and whether HTTP is used on the input or output side. They are not a generic restart switch and should not be copied as a fix for an RTMP or RTMPS YouTube publishing output.

Check YouTube after FFmpeg restarts
- In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm that the intended event is receiving the encoder feed. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key; it says to wait for the preview and then click Go live.
- Check the Live Dashboard or Live Control Room stream-health indicator and timestamped error messages alongside FFmpeg’s logs. A running process by itself is not evidence of a healthy feed.
- Check the viewer-facing event to confirm it is live and behaving as intended. Whether a restart reconnects to the event or requires a person to act is configuration-specific.
- For encoder configuration, use YouTube’s current encoder settings for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube provides recommended bitrate ranges by configuration and advises testing and monitoring stream health; use the applicable values rather than a bitrate copied from an unrelated setup.
Protect the stream key as a credential. If the feed fails after a restart, investigate an invalid or expired key, a bad input, incompatible settings, account or platform limits, and service outages rather than assuming the restart mechanism is at fault.
Know what continuous streaming does—and does not—guarantee
YouTube’s encoder help says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That platform statement is not a guarantee that a particular continuous stream will remain uninterrupted or be archived as you expect. YouTube also says DVR capability may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours; check its current guidance for the behavior relevant to your event.
