To bring an FFmpeg YouTube stream back after a VPS reboot, run FFmpeg as a systemd service, enable the service for boot, and configure it to restart after a qualifying failure. Then verify two separate things: that systemd launched FFmpeg and that YouTube Studio is receiving healthy media for the intended broadcast. A running process alone does not confirm a working stream.

What systemd can—and cannot—recover

A systemd service can start FFmpeg during normal boot and relaunch it if the process exits with a failure. This covers process and boot recovery; it does not repair a missing input file, expired stream key, unavailable network, or stalled output that leaves FFmpeg running.

Recovery layer What it can address What still needs checking
systemd service Starting FFmpeg at boot and restarting it after qualifying process failures. Whether FFmpeg can read the input, connect to YouTube, authenticate, and deliver decodable media.
FFmpeg output recovery May attempt to recover a network output without the process exiting, depending on the protocol, muxer, options, and installed build. Whether the relevant option exists locally and whether YouTube receives healthy media. It does not replace boot enablement or process supervision.

For long-running services, systemd project NEWS describes Restart=on-failure or Restart=on-abnormal as recommended choices. Check man systemd.service and man systemd.unit on your VPS for the installed version’s exact restart behavior, delays, and start limits. See the systemd project NEWS.

Prepare the FFmpeg command and YouTube settings

Confirm the input, output, and installed FFmpeg build

Before writing the service, identify the absolute path to FFmpeg, the input file or URL, the service account that can read it, and the YouTube ingest endpoint and stream key configured for the intended broadcast in Live Control Room. Check the installed build with ffmpeg -version. Options documented online may not exist in an older or differently configured package, so confirm any proposed option with local ffmpeg -h output and documentation matching that build.

It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.

Keep the stream key private. Do not put it in a publicly shared unit file, a command likely to be saved in shell history, or logs. A restricted environment file is one possible approach, but protect its permissions and remember that environment variables may be visible to privileged diagnostics. Depending on your systemd version, credentials support or another dedicated secret mechanism may be more appropriate.

Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance

YouTube recommends RTMPS for live streaming. Its encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS protocols; H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate encoding; frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Resolution and bitrate recommendations vary by profile, so use the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance and the settings shown in your Live Control Room rather than treating one bitrate as universal. YouTube also recommends testing before an event and monitoring stream health.

Create a systemd unit for FFmpeg

The following is a template, not a ready-to-run universal command. Replace the placeholders with values for your host, source, output, and secret handling. Invoking FFmpeg directly in ExecStart lets systemd supervise the encoder process itself.

WantedBy=multi-user.target
  • User= should name an account with permission to read the input and any required configuration. Use a suitable WorkingDirectory= if your command relies on relative paths.
  • Replace the placeholder in ExecStart with the actual FFmpeg arguments and a secure way to provide the output key. Do not paste a real key into a unit shared with others.
  • Restart=on-failure asks systemd to restart FFmpeg after qualifying failures; RestartSec=10s adds a modest delay before a restart. Confirm their precise behavior and the unit’s start limits with the local systemd manuals.
  • WantedBy=multi-user.target is a common installation target for services that should start in a normal multi-user boot. Distribution conventions can vary.
  • Wants=network-online.target and After=network-online.target are useful only when the service needs a functional network connection at startup and the host’s network stack provides the relevant wait-online behavior. network.target alone does not mean the network is operational. The systemd rc.local documentation explains this distinction and recommends proper unit files instead of relying on the rc.local compatibility path.

Save the file as /etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-youtube.service if that path suits your distribution. Adjust the unit name in the commands below if you choose another filename.

Reload, enable, and start the service

  1. Reload unit definitions: run sudo systemctl daemon-reload after creating or editing the service file.
  2. Enable it at boot and start it now: run sudo systemctl enable --now ffmpeg-youtube.service. Enabling alone configures boot behavior; --now also requests an immediate start.
  3. Check the service: run sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.service to see whether systemd considers the unit active and whether FFmpeg has exited or failed.
  4. Read recent logs: run sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -n 100 --no-pager. For live output, use sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -f.
  5. Test a planned reboot: during a maintenance window, reboot the VPS, then repeat the status and journal checks. Also check YouTube Studio rather than treating a successful service start as proof of a healthy broadcast.

Systemd documentation favors proper service unit files over using the rc.local compatibility mechanism for boot-time tasks. The unit’s exact installation and restart semantics depend on the installed systemd version and distribution.

Verify the stream in YouTube Studio

After reboot, first establish whether FFmpeg started, then establish whether YouTube is receiving media for the correct broadcast. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, check that the intended stream is selected and that its stream health indicates incoming media. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health; consult its current encoder guidance for current settings.

If systemd reports the service as active but Studio shows no incoming media or unhealthy stream, the process may be running without a working input or output. Use the journal to inspect FFmpeg’s connection and encoding messages, and verify the endpoint, key, and source independently.

Troubleshoot a stream that does not return

The service is not enabled or its command paths are wrong

Check systemctl is-enabled ffmpeg-youtube.service and inspect the unit with systemctl cat ffmpeg-youtube.service. Confirm that the FFmpeg path, input path, working directory, and any environment file exist and are accessible to the configured service user. systemd does not necessarily use the same PATH as your interactive shell, so absolute executable paths are safer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

FFmpeg starts, then exits

Inspect systemctl status and the unit journal for errors such as a missing input, permission denial, unsupported option, failed authentication, or inability to resolve or connect to the ingest host. Correct the underlying cause before relying on repeated restarts. A bad key or unavailable source is not fixed by a rapid retry loop.

The network is not ready at boot

Confirm that the VPS has an operational network, working DNS, permitted outbound firewall traffic, and access to the selected YouTube ingest endpoint. If startup ordering is the issue, check that the host’s network manager actually implements a wait-online service; merely ordering after network-online.target does not create that behavior by itself.

The key or broadcast does not match

Check that the current private stream key belongs to the intended broadcast in YouTube Studio and that the FFmpeg output uses the current ingest endpoint. Update secret storage without exposing the key in logs or shared configuration.

FFmpeg runs, but the output stalls

A process can remain alive while its media path is unhealthy, so systemd may have no failure to act on. Separate input recovery from output recovery: FFmpeg’s HTTP reconnect options concern HTTP input behavior, while network-output recovery is a different capability. Support and behavior depend on the protocol, muxer, and installed build. Consult the FFmpeg command documentation and protocol documentation, plus local help output, before using an option copied from another version. A watchdog, health check, or external monitor may help detect a stalled stream, but it must be designed and tested against the actual source and destination.

Read the journal and check systemd’s start-limit status rather than repeatedly forcing restarts. Fix the error first, then use the appropriate systemctl reset or restart operation for your distribution and unit state.
