MediaLive does not automatically restart a channel that has stopped and entered IDLE. To start an idle channel automatically, route its channel-state-change event through Amazon EventBridge to a handler that checks the channel’s current state and, if your policy allows it, calls the MediaLive StartChannel operation. A pipeline failure in a channel that is already running is different: MediaLive can enter RECOVERING and attempt pipeline recovery itself.
First identify what failed
“Restart after a failure” can mean different things in MediaLive. Choose a response based on whether the problem is the upstream source, an encoder pipeline, or the entire channel stopping.
| Failure | Relevant response | What it does—and does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Upstream source or path into MediaLive | Automatic input failover, if supported inputs are configured as a failover pair | Switches processing to a standby input when configured failure conditions occur; it does not restart the whole channel. |
| One MediaLive encoder pipeline | Pipeline redundancy and MediaLive’s recovery behavior | Redundant pipelines are intended to protect against a pipeline failure. For a channel that is still running, MediaLive also documents a pipeline-specific restart operation. |
The entire channel is stopped and IDLE |
An external, event-driven start workflow | A handler can decide whether a start is safe and call StartChannel. This is not a guarantee of uninterrupted output or a particular recovery time. |
AWS describes the distinction plainly: “You must always start a channel manually. The channel never starts automatically except when it is already running and attempts to recover from a failure.” In practice, “manually” here means a start must be explicitly requested; your own automation can make that request after checking the channel and its inputs.
Understand the channel state before taking action
Use the state in the event as a clue, not as the sole authorization to start. The handler should inspect the channel’s current state before acting, because events can be repeated, delayed, or no longer reflect the latest state.

IDLE: the channel is not running. This is the state in which a policy-approved automatic start may be appropriate.RECOVERING: one or both pipelines failed and MediaLive is restarting them. Do not issue a whole-channel start just because you see this state.STARTINGorSTOPPING: transitional states. Avoid conflicting or duplicate actions while a transition is in progress.RUNNING: the channel is running. An old event should not cause an additional start.
Build an EventBridge-to-MediaLive restart workflow
The following is a practical architecture, not a recovery policy prescribed by AWS. Decide in advance which channels may restart unattended, how many attempts are acceptable, and when an operator must be notified.
- Create a narrowly scoped EventBridge rule. Match the source
aws.medialiveand exact detail typeMediaLive Channel State Change. Narrow the pattern to the intended channel resource or ARN and to the actionable state, such asIDLE, rather than responding to every event from every channel. - Route matching events to a handler. A Lambda function is one possible target. The documented event format can include
detail.state,detail.channel_arn, anddetail.pipelines_running_count. Parse the channel identifier from the ARN or channel ARN field; validate that it is one of the channels the workflow is allowed to control. - Check the live channel state. Query MediaLive for the current state before deciding. If it is already
RUNNING,RECOVERING,STARTING, orSTOPPING, do not send a duplicate start. If it isIDLE, continue only if the channel is explicitly eligible under your recovery policy. - Verify prerequisites, then request the start. Confirm the relevant source and schedule are ready. If authorized, call the MediaLive
StartChannelAPI operation (or its SDK equivalent). A start request is not proof that the channel has reachedRUNNING; observe subsequent state changes and report failure or a prolonged idle condition. - Record the decision and make retries safe. Log the event, channel, state observed, decision, start request result, and later outcome. Treat duplicate delivery or handler retries as normal possibilities: re-check state before each attempt, and use a bounded retry policy rather than repeatedly issuing starts.
- Add a recovery path for missed events. EventBridge delivery of MediaLive service events is best-effort, not a durable guarantee that every state change reaches your target. If missing an idle transition is unacceptable, alert on persistent
IDLEstate or periodically reconcile channel state in addition to the event trigger.
Check sources and schedules before enabling unattended starts
- Push inputs: AWS notes that push inputs must already be sending before the channel starts. If the source only begins pushing after a channel is active, an automatic start may fail until you change the source workflow.
- Scheduled inputs: MediaLive evaluates the channel schedule when it starts. For multi-input channels, the schedule determines which input is selected.
- Scheduled file inputs: A file input may replay from the beginning of its file or clip after a restart rather than resume at the point implied by elapsed wall-clock time. Check whether that behavior is acceptable for the content and downstream viewers.
- Restart policy: Choose whether to restart automatically, alert an operator, or allow only a bounded number of attempts. The right choice depends on the channel’s content, cost, and outage tolerance; there is no universal AWS policy for an individual channel.
When to use pipeline restart or built-in redundancy instead
A full-channel start is not the right fix for every failure. Automatic input failover addresses certain upstream input failures when a supported failover pair is configured. Standard-channel pipeline redundancy and MediaLive’s pipeline recovery behavior address encoder-pipeline failures. These mechanisms have different configuration scopes; neither should be confused with starting a channel that is fully stopped.

RestartChannelPipelines is documented for a channel that is currently running. It is not the operation for starting a stopped channel. Consider the failure location, source readiness, schedule behavior, downstream support for redundant outputs, and the interruption your viewers can tolerate before choosing a recovery mechanism. A full stop-and-start workflow should not be treated as a continuity guarantee.
Troubleshoot automatic restart
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
The channel remains IDLE |
The event was not delivered, the rule did not match, the handler failed, or the start request was not authorized or accepted. | Check the EventBridge rule’s source, detail type, channel filter, and target; inspect handler logs and the start request result. Because service-event delivery is best-effort, use an alarm or reconciliation check for persistent idle state. |
| The handler starts a channel that is already recovering | The workflow treated an event state as sufficient proof of the current state. | Read the live channel state before acting. Do not issue a start for RECOVERING or a transition state. |
| The start request does not lead to a working channel | A required input may not be ready, or the request may have failed. | Check the API result and channel’s subsequent state. For push inputs, confirm that the source is already sending before start. |
| The channel starts on an unexpected input or the file content begins again | The channel schedule selected the input, or a scheduled file input restarted from the beginning. | Review the schedule and the restart semantics for each file input before allowing automatic recovery. |
| Repeated events cause competing start attempts | Event delivery or handler retries were not made safe. | Re-check current state on each invocation, keep a record of decisions, and apply a bounded retry policy. |
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a separate service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos; it does not restart AWS Elemental MediaLive channels, ingest camera feeds, or stream to platforms other than YouTube. Its workflow is to upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot; it can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream; and the first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.
