Use systemd to restart your encoder process when it exits and start it again when the Vultr VPS boots. Also enable the encoder’s own reconnect behavior and configure YouTube Live Control Room so it can accept and start the encoder feed. These are separate safeguards: a running service does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream, and neither safeguard prevents downtime from a VPS outage, bad credentials, or an unavailable YouTube ingest endpoint.
What automatic restart does—and does not—recover
A reliable setup has several layers that address different failures:
- systemd supervises the encoder process. It can relaunch the process after an exit and start the service at VPS boot.
- The encoder’s reconnect setting retries its connection to YouTube after a transient network interruption while the process remains alive.
- YouTube Live Control Room supplies the stream destination and key, and its auto-start option can let an incoming encoder feed start the configured stream.
If the VPS itself is unreachable, systemd cannot run until the server is available again. A wrong key, unsupported protocol, persistent network fault, or encoder failure also needs to be fixed; a restart loop cannot repair it. Treat automatic restart as recovery from a process exit, not a promise of uninterrupted broadcasting.
Prepare YouTube Live Control Room
- In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live and create or select an encoder stream.
- Copy the current stream URL and stream key from the stream settings into your encoder configuration. YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement.
- If your encoder supports RTMPS, retrieve YouTube’s RTMPS address using the lock icon in the Stream URL field. Do not assume an RTMP address can simply be changed to RTMPS by editing its text: the protocol, hostname, port, and encoder TLS support must match.
- Review the stream’s auto-start and auto-stop controls in Live Control Room. Auto-start lets an encoder feed start the stream under the configured conditions; it does not supervise or relaunch the encoder.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Google’s RTMPS guidance specifies port 443 and hostname-based SNI authentication. Use the exact endpoint YouTube presents for the stream and verify that the encoder supports the required secure connection.

Set encoder output to YouTube’s current requirements
Use YouTube’s live encoder settings reference before going live; accepted settings and recommendations can change. The following figures are YouTube’s current guidance accessed in 2026, not universal targets for every codec or resolution.

These sample bitrates do not apply automatically to AV1 or H.265, other resolutions, or other frame rates. Select a supported setting from YouTube’s current table rather than extrapolating from these examples.
Configure the encoder to reconnect
Enable the encoder’s own network-reconnect option as well as systemd supervision. In Vultr’s OBS setup tutorial, the reconnect controls are labeled Automatically Reconnect; the tutorial gives example retry delay and maximum-retry values. Those are tutorial-specific choices, not universal settings. Choose a retry delay that gives a transient fault a chance to clear, and avoid an effectively endless rapid retry loop that masks a persistent configuration error.

A reconnect attempt can help when a connection drops briefly. It will not resolve a reset stream key, incorrect URL, unsupported RTMPS/TLS configuration, sustained network failure, or a VPS that has run out of resources. Check encoder logs and YouTube’s preview and stream-health information when retries continue.
Run the encoder as a systemd service
Vultr’s systemd guidance demonstrates a unit with ExecStart, Restart=always, a daemon reload, and service enablement. Adapt the unit to the actual executable, command-line arguments, Linux user, environment, and working directory on your VPS. The example below is a pattern, not a ready-made OBS configuration; a graphical OBS installation may require a desktop session and display environment that a headless service does not provide.

Do not put a stream key into a command or unit file that other users can read; use the encoder’s protected configuration or an appropriately permissioned environment/configuration mechanism.

- Save the unit as
/etc/systemd/system/youtube-encoder.service, changing the example fields to match your setup. - After creating or editing the file, run
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Enable startup at boot with
sudo systemctl enable youtube-encoder.service. - Start it now with
sudo systemctl start youtube-encoder.service. - Inspect its state with
sudo systemctl status youtube-encoder.service. For recent service output, usesudo journalctl -u youtube-encoder.service -n 100 --no-pager.
Restart=always is one available policy, not a guarantee that a failed encoder will recover successfully. If the process exits immediately, systemd may keep launching it. Use the status and journal output to find and correct the underlying error rather than treating repeated restarts as proof of recovery.
Test process recovery and the actual YouTube feed
- Before relying on unattended operation, run a test stream with representative audio and motion. YouTube recommends checking the preview and stream health; a static or silent test may fail to expose problems in the real program.
- With the test live, confirm that YouTube receives the encoder preview and reports acceptable stream health.
- In a controlled test, stop the encoder process and check that systemd starts it again. Review
systemctl statusand the journal for the stop, restart, and any repeated error. - Confirm that the encoder reconnects or sends a new feed and that YouTube again shows the preview. Test failover and recovery before depending on the setup for a real broadcast.
A service marked active only reports process state. It does not confirm that YouTube accepted the key, received video and audio, or is showing viewers a healthy broadcast. Streams under 12 hours are automatically archived according to YouTube’s encoder setup help accessed in 2026; check the current YouTube Help guidance before relying on that archive behavior.

Vultr’s OBS tutorial, updated 2025-04-01, gives example prerequisites of 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB storage, and 3 TB bandwidth for its tutorial setup. These are not a universal minimum for every encoder and should not be read as a current Vultr plan offer. Actual needs vary with the encoder, codec, resolution, frame rate, and workload.

OBS offers a graphical configuration path but its deployment and desktop-session requirements matter, especially on a headless server. FFmpeg can be run as a command-line process and supervised by systemd, but the available guidance does not establish a tested FFmpeg command or a measured OBS-versus-FFmpeg winner. Choose based on how you will configure output, handle reconnects, run at boot, monitor logs, and sustain the required CPU and memory load.
Monitor CPU and dropped frames during a representative test. Vultr’s tutorial warns that high CPU use can coincide with dropped frames and gives a 90% threshold in that tutorial context; it is not a universal engineering limit. For bandwidth planning, account for bitrate, stream duration, audio, protocol overhead, plan terms, and server region. The tutorial’s dated bandwidth figure is not enough to calculate a universal monthly cost.
Troubleshoot common restart and connection failures
