The right fix depends on what crashed. If OBS is still open but its connection dropped, OBS’s Automatically Reconnect setting can try to restore the output. If the prerecorded file simply ended, enable Loop on its Media Source. If OBS itself closed or crashed, neither setting relaunches the application: YouTube’s auto-start setting is an encoder control, not a watchdog that restarts a crashed encoder. For unattended YouTube playback, you can also run the video from the cloud with StreamNeo.

First identify what stopped

Check the computer and OBS before changing settings. These failures look similar in the YouTube player but need different fixes:

  • The video reached its end: OBS may still be running and streaming, but the Media Source has finished playback.
  • The output connection dropped: OBS remains open, but its connection to YouTube was interrupted.
  • OBS crashed or closed: The encoder application is no longer running. Output reconnection cannot restart a process that has stopped.

YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop controls let you start or stop streaming from an encoder when enabled; the documented setting does not say YouTube will relaunch a crashed encoder. Manage live stream settings.

If the prerecorded file ended, loop the Media Source

In OBS, open the properties for the scene’s Media Source and enable Loop. This makes the file play again when playback completes. If instead you need the file to start over whenever the source becomes visible in the scene, enable Restart playback when source becomes active. That option responds to source visibility; it is not a substitute for Loop during continuous playback. These controls address media playback, not an OBS crash. OBS Media Sources.

If OBS is open but disconnected, configure automatic reconnect

  1. In OBS, open Settings and go to the output or connection settings where Automatically Reconnect is available. OBS labels and layout can vary by version.
  2. Enable Automatically Reconnect, then choose a retry delay and maximum retry count appropriate for your connection and event. OBS documents reconnect controls, but they do not guarantee recovery from every YouTube-side event state or outage. OBS Studio Overview Guide.
  3. Test before relying on the setting. Interrupt the connection in a controlled test and check whether OBS reconnects and YouTube resumes playback as expected.

Automatic reconnect applies while OBS is running. It does not restart OBS after the application crashes, and it should not be described as a process supervisor.

If OBS itself crashed, use a separate recovery mechanism

OBS’s media loop and output reconnect settings cannot reopen a closed application. An operating-system task or external process supervisor may be able to relaunch software, but that alone does not establish that OBS will resume the correct scheduled YouTube broadcast, scene, source playback position, or stream state. There is no universal, verified restart recipe here that guarantees those outcomes. If you build local automation, test it with a private or otherwise controlled stream before using it for a real broadcast.

For higher availability, test a backup encoder

YouTube recommends testing encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then checking that the player rolls over to the backup encoder. A backup is a separate encoder that must be configured and ready; it is a different recovery strategy from asking the primary OBS output to reconnect. Review YouTube’s live streaming tips and perform a controlled failover test before depending on it.

Check the stream key and connection details if the encoder will not start

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and locate the stream’s connection details.
  2. Confirm OBS is using the intended YouTube server or stream URL and the matching stream key. YouTube describes the key as the credential that lets an encoder send its feed.
  3. If needed, copy the key from Live Control Room into OBS, then preview and start the encoder stream using YouTube’s encoder workflow. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
  4. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not show it in screenshots or include it in public logs.

Use transmission settings for connection quality, not crash recovery

YouTube’s encoder guidance covers recommended bitrate by resolution, frame rate, and codec, and recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingestion. Correct protocol and quality settings can help with transmission, but they do not relaunch OBS or recover a crashed process. Check YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance and its RTMPS guidance for the current settings relevant to your stream.
