If the YouTube event is still upcoming or live, reconnect your encoder to that existing event using its Stream URL and stream key. Check the preview and event status in Live Control Room; for a scheduled event that is not yet live, click Go live when the preview appears. Do not create a replacement event or click End Stream if you want to continue with the same event and link.
If YouTube has marked the broadcast complete, its documentation does not describe reopening that same broadcast as live. You will need to schedule another event and may need to share its new link.
What “restart without changing the link” means
The viewer-facing watch page belongs to the broadcast event. Your encoder sends its video feed to YouTube using the event’s Stream URL and stream key. These are related but distinct: reconnecting the encoder restores the feed to an existing event; changing or resetting a stream key changes the encoder credential, not the viewer-facing event link. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain that a watch page is created for the stream.
The key question is the event’s status in Live Control Room. If it remains upcoming or live, reconnect to that event. If it is complete, do not assume a key reset or encoder restart can make it live again.

Reconnect your encoder to the existing event
- Open the event. In YouTube Studio, go to Live Control Room and select the existing scheduled stream or current event under Manage. Do not create a new event for a simple feed interruption.
- Check the connection details. In the encoder, verify the Stream URL and the stream key associated with that event. Start or reconnect the encoder.
- Wait for the preview. Confirm that video appears in Live Control Room. If the scheduled event is not already live, click Go live. If it is live, check its status and viewer playback.
- Replace a rejected key if needed. Copy the current key from Live Control Room into the encoder. Reset the key only when necessary, such as if it may have been compromised; after resetting it, update the encoder with the new key.
- Keep the event open. Avoid End Stream if you intend to resume this same event.

If the encoder will not reconnect
- Check the Stream URL and key. Make sure the encoder is using the values for the selected event, rather than an old or different event’s details.
- Verify protocol support. If the connection uses RTMPS, confirm that the URL/protocol is correct and that the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance covers encrypted stream connections; its live-stream troubleshooting guide addresses connection errors.
- Check the event status before changing anything. A connection error does not by itself establish that the event is complete. Return to Live Control Room and confirm whether the same event is still upcoming or live.
When you need a new event
If you explicitly ended the stream or YouTube shows the broadcast as complete, schedule a new broadcast for another live session. The YouTube API defines the complete state as the broadcast being over, with YouTube stopping video transmission; it does not document reopening that completed broadcast as live. There is no universal reconnect grace period established for every YouTube Studio workflow. The API’s broadcast lifecycle documentation describes conditional auto-stop behavior when that setting is enabled, not a guaranteed window for all interruptions. YouTube recommends preparing streams ahead of time, but its setup recommendations are not a promise that a disconnected encoder can reconnect for a particular number of minutes.
Prevent disruption with a failover test
If your setup uses a backup encoder, YouTube recommends testing failover before relying on it. During a planned test, stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet cable, then verify that playback rolls to the backup encoder in Live Control Room. Do this as a test rather than during an important broadcast. See YouTube live streaming tips.
