If VLC closes unexpectedly, it will not restart itself just because looping is enabled. Run the playback command under an operating-system task or service supervisor configured to relaunch it after failure. That can restart VLC, but it cannot fix an expired YouTube URL, a stream that has ended, or a connection problem.

First identify what stopped: VLC may have exited, stayed open while playback stalled, or reached the end of its source. Each needs a different response.

Identify what failed

  • VLC exited: A process supervisor can relaunch the command after it fails. This is the case addressed by restart-on-failure settings.
  • VLC is still open, but playback stopped: Relaunching only on process exit will not help if the process remains alive. You need to diagnose the player, network, or source and use a reconnect mechanism appropriate to that failure; the sources available here do not establish VLC’s behavior for every in-process YouTube interruption.
  • The YouTube source ended or is unavailable: A restarted player still needs a usable source URL. If the URL expired, the event ended, or the resolver cannot access the page, restarting the same command may fail repeatedly.

Use a supervisor to restart an exited player

A practical architecture is to run a stream resolver and VLC as one supervised task. Streamlink documents an external-player workflow that can send supported streams to VLC, and its stable documentation lists YouTube as a supported service. Compatibility can change as YouTube and the Streamlink plugin change, so check the current documentation for your installed release: Streamlink documentation.

  1. Confirm ordinary playback first. Install VLC and Streamlink using their current instructions for your operating system. Run the Streamlink-to-VLC workflow manually and confirm that the current YouTube URL plays before configuring automatic restart. The exact command and arguments depend on the installed versions and setup.
  2. Make the complete playback launch one task. Configure the supervisor to launch the resolver/player workflow, rather than supervising an unrelated VLC window. Ensure that a retry cannot create a second playback instance while the first is still running.
  3. Enable restart after failure. Set a delay and a retry limit where the supervisor offers those controls. A short delay avoids an immediate tight restart loop; a finite limit helps prevent repeated failures from continuing unnoticed.
  4. Keep diagnostic information. Use task history or logs so you can tell whether the process exited, whether it relaunched, and what error appeared. Test the configuration by deliberately ending the supervised process.

Windows: configure Task Scheduler restart-on-failure

Microsoft’s Task Scheduler supports restarting a task after failure through RestartOnFailure. Its documentation requires both a restart count and an interval; the documented interval range is one minute to 31 days. See Microsoft’s RestartOnFailure documentation and restart interval settings.

4K Full-HD USB and microSD Digital Media Player for TV Digital Signage
  • [Smooth 4K Ultra HD Playback] This 4K@30Hz HDMI digital media player utilizes H.265/HEVC decoding technology, enabling playback of videos up to 4096×2304 resolution compared to H.264 or 1080P, delivering a clearer and smoother picture.

  • [TV Projector or Digital Signage] This 4K media player supports autoplay, loop playback, and shuffle playback, and supports both landscape and portrait display modes. HDMI media player can run continuously, making it ideal for TV projector or digital signage such as restaurant welcome videos, reception videos, and art and museum installations.
  • [Extensive Compatibility] This media player for TV can play media files from USB hard drives up to 8TB in capacity or micro SD cards up to 1TB in capacity. Supported file systems include FAT32, exFAT, and NTFS. Supported formats include: H.265/HEVC (MKV, MOV, AVI), MPEG, FLV, RM, 3GP, MP4, WMV, RMVB, DAT, MPG, TS, M2TS, JPG, JPEG, BMP, GIF, PNG, MP3, OGG, FLAC, APE, AAC, WMA, etc.

In Task Scheduler, configure the task’s action to launch your tested playback workflow, then set the task’s failure-restart options to the count and interval you intend to allow. Microsoft documents the scheduler settings, not the exact VLC or Streamlink action and arguments for every installation, so validate those against your setup. Confirm that the task runs under an account with access to the needed files and network, and inspect Task Scheduler history after a deliberate test exit.

macOS and Linux

Use the operating system’s task or service supervisor to run the tested playback command and restart it on failure. The sources cited here do not establish a complete, current macOS or Linux service configuration, so check the official documentation for the supervisor and operating-system version you use before copying a service-file recipe. Apply the same safeguards: avoid duplicate player instances, use a restart delay or limit if available, and preserve logs.

Why VLC loop is not crash recovery

VideoLAN documents VLM’s loop behavior as restarting a broadcast’s input list after the final input finishes. That is end-of-list looping; it does not demonstrate that VLC can restart its own process after a crash or reconnect to an interrupted YouTube stream. See the VideoLAN VLM documentation.

VLC’s command-line options can also vary by version. A third-party guide describes command-line playback across Windows, macOS, and Linux for VLC 3.0.x, but verify any flags against your installed version rather than assuming they apply unchanged: VLC.cc command-line guide (updated July 14, 2026).

Troubleshoot repeated failures

  • The task never restarts: Check that restart-on-failure is enabled and that the task has both the required retry count and interval. Review task history or logs for the actual exit status.
  • Each restart fails immediately: Run the same playback workflow manually. The YouTube URL may no longer work, the source may have ended, or the resolver may no longer support the page. A supervisor repeats the command; it does not make an invalid source valid.
  • VLC stays open but video freezes: Process-failure restart settings may not trigger because VLC has not exited. Check network connectivity and player/source state; configure a suitable stream-level recovery strategy rather than assuming process supervision detects a stall.
  • Multiple VLC windows or streams appear: The supervisor may be launching another instance without confirming that the previous process ended. Adjust the task so only one playback instance runs at a time.
  • Playback works manually but not as a scheduled task: Compare the task’s account, permissions, working directory, and access to the network with the environment used for the successful manual run.
