To recover a looping ASMR stream automatically, you need to protect more than the YouTube broadcast: the video player must keep looping, the encoder must keep running and sending data, the network must stay connected, and YouTube must still have an active broadcast to receive the feed. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings can control parts of the broadcast lifecycle, but they do not, by themselves, relaunch a crashed player or encoder or repair a broken connection.
What “automatic restart” can mean
A stream can stop at several different points. Identify the failed layer first: the fix for a video that stopped looping is different from the fix for an encoder crash or an ended YouTube broadcast.
- Loop or media player: The source video or playlist stops, reaches its end without looping, or becomes unavailable. The encoder may remain connected but transmit a frozen frame, black screen, or no useful content.
- Encoder process: OBS or another encoder closes, freezes, or stops sending. YouTube cannot restart that software on your computer.
- Network connection: The encoder is running but cannot reliably reach YouTube. Reconnecting may restore the feed, but a persistent local or ISP problem needs to be fixed at its source.
- YouTube broadcast: The event may still be live, or it may have ended. Reconnecting to an ended broadcast is not the same as restarting the video loop; you may need to start or schedule a new broadcast.
YouTube’s encoder workflow sends a feed to YouTube using a stream URL and stream key. YouTube also says streams that run for less than 12 hours are automatically archived after they end. That is an archive behavior, not an automatic-restart feature or an uptime guarantee.
Set up YouTube and your encoder for recovery
1. Create or schedule the broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, create a live stream or schedule one in advance. Choose the visibility and other broadcast details appropriate for your channel.
- Open the stream’s encoder settings in Studio and copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- For a recurring setup, check which stream settings are reused. YouTube documents that reusing settings also copies the auto-start and auto-stop selections, so verify those options rather than assuming the next broadcast will use the behavior you want.
2. Configure the looping source and encoder
- Set the media source or playlist in your encoder to repeat continuously. Confirm that the intended ASMR file is available locally or from its source and that it plays from the beginning after a restart.
- Configure the encoder to connect to the correct YouTube stream URL and key. Start the encoder and confirm that it is actually sending data; a running program window alone does not prove that the feed is reaching YouTube.
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, check the preview and stream health indicator. YouTube displays messages next to the health indicator; use them alongside the encoder’s status to diagnose a feed problem.
3. Choose YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop behavior deliberately
YouTube documents auto-start and auto-stop as controls for starting or stopping a stream from the encoder. They can help coordinate the YouTube broadcast lifecycle with an encoder connection, but the documentation does not describe them as a way to restart failed encoder software, restore the media player, or guarantee recovery from a network interruption. Availability of these controls may vary by account or interface, so check the settings shown for your broadcast in Studio.

For scheduled streams, the encoder and Live Control Room have coordinated roles. If auto-start and auto-stop are off, a manual action in Live Control Room may be required to go live; OBS’s guide describes that workflow, but its interface steps may not match the current YouTube UI. Use the current YouTube Studio controls as the authority for your account.
Add automation for failures YouTube cannot fix
If the player or encoder process itself can stop, YouTube’s broadcast settings are not enough. Use automation at the layer that failed: configure the player to resume its playlist, or use operating-system process supervision or a scheduler to relaunch the encoder after an unexpected exit. The exact setup depends on the encoder and operating system; no single setting can be prescribed for every combination.

Test the recovery path with a private or unlisted broadcast where appropriate. Confirm that the player resumes, the encoder reconnects to the intended stream, and YouTube shows a healthy incoming feed. A test should also establish what happens if the existing event has ended, so an automatic action does not create an unintended duplicate or try to control the wrong broadcast.
API-based control
YouTube’s Live Streaming API distinguishes a liveStream resource, representing the audio-video feed, from a liveBroadcast resource, representing the event. An API controller can manage broadcast resources, but a restart workflow must also account for authorization, broadcast lifecycle state, encoder state, and API errors. The resource model alone is not a complete restart procedure. Build monitoring and safeguards before automating start, stop, or event creation.

Troubleshoot a stream that did not recover
- Check the source first. Confirm that the ASMR video or playlist is still playing and set to loop. If it stopped, restore the source before diagnosing YouTube.
- Check the encoder process and outgoing feed. Confirm that the encoder is open, connected to the intended stream URL and key, and sending data. If it has exited or frozen, restart or relaunch it through your configured process automation.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Inspect the preview and stream health messages. If the encoder reports streaming but YouTube has no healthy feed, investigate the connection and encoder output rather than relying on the encoder’s status label alone.
- Check the broadcast state before starting again. Determine whether the current broadcast is still active or has ended. If it ended, follow the appropriate start or scheduled-event workflow instead of assuming a reconnect will revive it.
- Re-test the full chain. After a fix, verify source playback, encoder transmission, YouTube preview, and health status. If you use automation, confirm it acts on the intended event and does not repeatedly start or stop the wrong broadcast.

Does YouTube auto-start restart OBS after it crashes?
No. The documented setting controls stream start behavior from the encoder; restarting a crashed encoder requires separate software or operating-system automation.
