Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo restart a 24/7 recorded lecture stream after OBS crashes, use a watchdog outside OBS to detect that the OBS process has exited, wait briefly, confirm it has not already restarted, and launch it again with the right scene collection, profile, and output flags. OBS’s automatic reconnect is not enough: it can address a lost connection while OBS is still running, but it cannot relaunch an OBS process that has stopped.
On Windows, Task Scheduler can start a script or program at system startup or in response to an event, but its documented triggers are not, by themselves, an OBS crash watcher. Pair it with a process supervisor or script, and test the full recovery on the machine and OBS version you will use.
What automatic recovery needs to do
Recovery has two separate jobs: an external monitor must notice that OBS has exited, and a new OBS process must start with the intended output. OBS launch parameters can start streaming or recording and choose a collection, profile, and scene; they do not monitor OBS or repair a missing credential, source file, network connection, or streaming endpoint.
- Monitor outside OBS. A script, service wrapper, or other process supervisor checks whether OBS is still running. An OBS script or WebSocket client can control a running OBS instance, but it is not a dependable monitor once the OBS process itself has terminated.
- Wait and check again. After detecting an exit, pause briefly and verify that no OBS instance remains before relaunching. This helps avoid duplicate instances and rapid restart loops.
- Launch the intended setup. Start OBS with the desired collection and profile, and request streaming, recording, or both as needed.
- Verify recovery. Confirm that the stream is live and, if applicable, that a new local recording is being written. A successful process launch alone does not establish that the output is working.
These steps address an OBS process crash. They do not restore service if the computer is off, the network is down, credentials are unavailable, or the streaming endpoint is failing.

Prepare OBS to launch unattended
Save the right configuration
Before automating recovery, save the scene collection and profile used for the lecture. Check that the starting scene, media sources, output settings, stream credentials, and recording destination are correct. The account context used by the supervisor must have access to the OBS configuration and any required files, devices, and credentials.
For a recorded lecture, decide whether recovery should restart the YouTube stream, the local recording, or both. Streaming and recording are separate outputs: starting one does not imply that the other has started.

To start a local recording instead, use --startrecording in place of --startstreaming. If both outputs are required, configure and test the launch for both. Replace the example collection and profile names with the exact names on your system. These are example combinations, not a guarantee that a particular configuration will launch correctly.

Set up an external restart monitor
Windows: combine a supervisor with Task Scheduler
Microsoft documents Task Scheduler triggers such as ONSTART (at system startup) and ONEVENT (in response to an event), and task actions can run an executable, script, or batch file. Those capabilities can help start a supervisor, but the cited Task Scheduler reference does not provide an OBS-specific process-exit watcher. The supervisor itself must check for OBS exiting and relaunch it.
- Choose a process supervisor or script that runs under the same user context as OBS and can access its configuration, files, devices, and credentials.
- Configure it to start at the appropriate time, such as system startup, and to check the OBS process at a reasonable interval.
- When OBS exits, have the supervisor wait briefly, confirm no OBS instance remains, and then start OBS with the launch parameters for the intended output.
- Set safeguards such as a retry limit, a delay between attempts, and logging so that a broken configuration does not create an endless rapid-restart loop.
- If using a scheduled or automated OBS launch on Windows, set the task’s “Start in…” working directory to the folder containing
obs64.exe, as OBS instructs.
Task Scheduler supplies triggers and task execution; it should not be mistaken for the process monitor unless the chosen setup actually includes one.

Other operating systems
The same architecture applies elsewhere: a monitor outside OBS must detect the exited process and start it again in the correct user/session context. The available documentation here does not establish exact service configuration steps for Linux or macOS. Check the service manager and OBS behavior for the specific operating system and release, then validate source access, credentials, and output after a restart.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep crash recovery separate from reconnect
Automatic reconnect is intended for a running OBS instance that loses its streaming connection. It cannot recover an OBS process that has crashed or otherwise exited. Conversely, a watchdog that relaunches OBS does not necessarily fix a network or endpoint outage. Treat these as separate failure cases: test a process exit and a temporary stream interruption independently.
Test recovery before relying on it
- Test during a safe window, not during a live lecture. First stop OBS cleanly and confirm the supervisor’s normal startup behavior.
- In a controlled window, terminate OBS unexpectedly and check that the monitor detects the exit, waits, and launches only one new instance.
- Confirm the intended collection, profile, and scene loaded, and verify that the stream or recording actually started.
- Separately simulate a temporary stream outage while OBS remains open and check its reconnect behavior.
- Review OBS logs and supervisor logs. Check for crash dialogs, missing sources, unavailable credentials, plugin issues, and recording-file problems.
OBS crash handling may present a dialog after an improper shutdown, including an option for Safe Mode that disables third-party plugins, scripts, and WebSockets. The available localization text does not establish that every OBS version or operating system behaves identically. Check the target installation during a controlled test, especially if unattended recovery could be blocked by a prompt.
Choose the recovery approach that matches the failure
| Approach | Role | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| External process supervisor or service wrapper | Checks whether OBS is alive and can relaunch it after exit. | Configure for the operating system, user session, and required access; no specific supervisor is certified here. |
| Windows Task Scheduler | Can start a program or script at system startup or on an event. | The cited Microsoft reference does not specify an OBS process-exit watcher. |
| OBS launch parameters | Can select a collection, profile, or scene and request streaming or recording at launch. | They do not monitor OBS or resolve missing dependencies and external failures. |
| OBS scripts or WebSocket | Can extend or control a running OBS instance. | They are not a replacement for an outside monitor after OBS exits. |
Common recovery problems
- OBS starts, but the stream does not. Check that the launch includes
--startstreaming, that the selected profile has the intended output configuration, and that credentials and network access are available. - The wrong scene or sources appear. Confirm the exact collection, profile, and scene names in the launch parameters, and make sure the source files or devices are accessible to the account running the task.
- OBS opens with a prompt instead of going live. Inspect the crash dialog and plugin or script behavior after an unexpected exit. Test Safe Mode behavior and resolve any prompt that blocks unattended startup.
- OBS launches repeatedly or duplicates itself. Add a delay and a second process check before relaunching, then use retry limits and logs to diagnose a loop.
- The stream drops but OBS stays open. This is a connection-recovery issue, not a process crash. Check OBS reconnect behavior and the network or endpoint separately.
- Nothing restarts after power or network loss. A local process monitor cannot help if the host is off or cannot reach the streaming service. Consider monitoring from outside the host if availability matters.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube lecture stream running without depending on OBS staying open on a local computer, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud loops the uploaded videos, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
