If an AI chatbot gives outdated or incorrect information about your business, save the exact answer, correct the authoritative pages and listings you control, then use the platform’s specific edit, refresh, or reporting route. Check again later, but don’t assume a submission will change an answer immediately—or at all.

1. Capture exactly what the chatbot said

Before changing anything, save a dated screenshot or transcript. Record the chatbot, the exact prompt, the full answer, any cited URLs, and the incorrect detail. This makes it easier to identify whether the answer points to a stale page, a business listing, a third-party source, or no visible source at all.

  • Note why the detail is wrong and what the current fact is.
  • Open each cited URL and record whether you or another party controls it.
  • If there is no citation, don’t assume you know where the chatbot got the information.

If the misinformation could affect safety, legal rights, customer transactions, or urgent operations, publish the accurate information through customer-facing channels promptly. Seek appropriate professional advice before making claims about liability or legal remedies.

2. Correct the source you control first

Update the business’s own website and any listings you manage before asking a platform to refresh its answer. Keep important details consistent and explicit: business name, address, hours, phone number, services, prices, service area, and policies. Google says it gathers Business Profile information from multiple sources and may update profiles when sources report incorrect or outdated information; not every update can be managed in the profile. Google’s Business Profile guidance explains owner controls and suggested edits.

If the cited page belongs to a directory, publisher, or another listing owner, contact that party and request a correction. If the page is yours but the search or chatbot display remains stale, use the relevant platform’s refresh or recrawl options after fixing the page itself.

3. Choose the platform-specific correction route

Where the error appears What to do What the request means
Google Business Profile Edit the profile and review notifications for suggested edits. Respond to a suggested edit when one is presented. Some suggested edits require a response within four days. Google may publish a suggestion supported by public information, such as the business website, if there is no response. Not every profile update has an owner-side control. Google Business Profile Help
Google Search knowledge panel Make sure the business details on the relevant page are accurate and available to Search. After Google last crawled the marked-up page, wait at least a week, then use the panel’s Feedback link if it is still wrong. Google’s guidance describes this feedback route and timing for a knowledge panel; it is not a guarantee of a specific correction date. Google Search Central
Bing or Microsoft Copilot, citing a business-owned page Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools, correct the page, then request indexing or submit the changed URL through a supported method. Bing currently recommends IndexNow for faster automated URL notification; direct URL submission remains available for certain advanced use cases. A submission can help discovery or refresh, but Bing says it does not guarantee that a submitted URL will be indexed. Check the current Webmaster Tools interface because tool availability and API details can change. Bing Webmaster Tools guidance
Bing or Copilot, showing an already-updated page Use Bing’s content-refresh request for a page whose content has changed. For a removed page, follow the removal process; the source must be removed or return an appropriate dead-link status before a removal request can work. Refresh and removal are different processes. Follow the relevant instructions in Bing’s content removal guidance and Bing’s permanent removal instructions.
ChatGPT Use the thumbs-down option on the message to provide feedback about the conversation, or use OpenAI’s content reporting form for concerns covered by its reporting process. OpenAI describes review and reporting routes, not a guaranteed edit to a particular answer or a general correction mechanism for ordinary business facts. Treat a report as feedback for review. See OpenAI’s reporting guidance and its explanation of ChatGPT accuracy.

4. Give customers a clear, authoritative correction

If people may act on the incorrect information, post the current fact somewhere you control, such as your website, booking page, or customer-support channel. Keep the notice short: identify the incorrect detail, state the correct information, and link to the authoritative page. Don’t repeat an unverified accusation or say a provider has accepted or fixed a correction until you have confirmed the displayed result.

5. Recheck and keep an audit trail

Later, run the same prompt again and record the date, answer, and citations. Also check the specific listing, search result, or cited page involved. If the source page is correct but its displayed result is not, use the relevant refresh or recrawl route and allow time for processing; don’t promise a turnaround unless the platform explicitly provides one.

For a verified site, Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance report shows when pages are visibly cited in supported AI answers, including Microsoft Copilot and Bing-generated summaries. It allows comparisons over time, but Bing cautions that a change in citation activity does not explain why it changed. The report is a monitoring clue, not proof that a correction caused an answer to change. Read about Bing’s AI Performance report.

Keep corrections factual and reviews genuine

Verify a chatbot’s confident-sounding claim against a current, authoritative source. Don’t try to suppress a wrong answer by buying reviews, coordinating ratings, or scripting customer praise. Google Maps requires reviews to reflect genuine experience and be genuine and unbiased; businesses may ask for genuine reviews, but not offer incentives or pressure customers about rating or content. Google’s prohibited and restricted content policy sets out those rules.
