To respec Transmutation-focused skills in Valor Mortis, rest at a Lantern, open the level-up or skill menu, choose the reset-level, reset-skills, or respec command shown by your game version, and confirm the Catalyst fee. The game refunds your spent skill points so you can place them elsewhere in the skill tree.
This process rebuilds your character investment; it is not documented as a way to replace or reselect the Transmutation powers you have already earned. Those left-hand powers are acquired during progression from unique plague-infected humanoids. A reset changes the upgrades supporting those powers, such as Transmutation Damage, Nephtoglobin capacity or sufferance, status buildup, and healing effectiveness.
What a Transmutation respec actually does
The Lantern reset operates on your allocated skill points. When you confirm it, points spent in attributes and skill-tree upgrades are returned for immediate reassignment. You can then build toward a different combat role, correct an inefficient early-game investment, or shift more of your character’s budget toward Nephtoglobin and Transmutation performance.
Think of the feature as a character-build reset rather than a Transmutation inventory reset. Your investment in the tree is reversible, but the evidence available for Valor Mortis does not describe a second pool of Transmutation powers that can be exchanged at a Lantern. A respec therefore helps you support the powers you possess; it does not let you choose a different collection of story- or progression-based powers.

What is refunded
- Skill points already assigned through the level-up or skill interface.
- Points invested in general attributes that affect survivability, stamina, melee output, or related combat performance.
- Points assigned to Transmutation-related upgrades, including the documented Nephtoglobin and status-effect choices.
What remains tied to progression
Transmutations are described as left-hand powers fueled by Nephtoglobin. They are obtained by progressing through the game and encountering unique plague-infected humanoids. Nothing in the documented Lantern procedure says that resetting your skills removes those powers, unlocks alternate ones, or changes the order in which they were acquired.
How to respec at a Lantern
The labels can vary by platform, localization, or game version. Look for the reset wording presented by your own interface rather than relying on a specific controller button from an older guide.
- Reach a Lantern. Travel to a Lantern and rest there so its character-management options are available. If the Lantern menu does not appear, leave the interaction and activate the Lantern again; the reset is performed from the Lantern’s management interface, not from an ordinary pause screen.
- Open the level-up or skill menu. Select the option that lets you spend or inspect skill points. Depending on the version you are playing, this may be labeled as level up, skills, or a similar character-progression command.
- Find the reset command. Select the entry named reset level, reset skills, respec, or an equivalent phrase. The important distinction is that this is the full skill-allocation reset, not an individual upgrade toggle.
- Inspect the price before confirming. The confirmation screen should show the Catalyst requirement. Do not accept until the displayed amount is affordable and the refunded-point result is clear.
- Confirm using the on-screen prompt. Button mappings were not consistently documented across the available guides, so use the confirm and cancel controls shown on your platform. If the prompt is easy to miss, move the cursor or focus to the reset command again and read the confirmation panel rather than assuming a single press completed it.
- Reallocate the returned points. Spend the refunded points in the same menu. You can emphasize general attributes first, then select Transmutation support such as Nephtoglobin Sufferance, Nephtoglobin Extraction, Nephtoglobin Remnants, Transmutation Damage, Status Buildup, Healing Effectiveness, or combined Nephtoglobin/Transmutation upgrades where your build needs them.
- Leave the menu only after checking the result. Review the final allocation and your available Nephtoglobin and combat values before returning to play. This catches accidental unspent points and makes it easier to compare the new setup with the problem that prompted the reset.

The documented skill-tree choices cover several different ways of improving a Transmutation-oriented character. Their exact numerical effects are governed by the game interface and may change with balancing updates, so use the descriptions shown in your current build when deciding how many points to commit.

This is the direct offensive category for a build that wants its left-hand powers to contribute more of its damage. It is the most obvious destination when your reason for resetting is that a Transmutation attack feels underpowered after you have improved general attributes.
Nephtoglobin capacity and sufferance
Nephtoglobin is the resource that fuels Transmutations. Capacity-oriented choices address how much of that resource you can hold, while sufferance-related choices are part of the documented Nephtoglobin support path. If your attacks are strong but you cannot use them often enough, these nodes may solve a resource problem more directly than another damage point.
Nephtoglobin Extraction
Extraction is another listed Nephtoglobin upgrade. Read its in-game description to determine the trigger and benefit in your version, then decide whether it matches the way you recover or generate the resource during fights. Do not assume that every Nephtoglobin node improves maximum capacity; the tree separates several functions.

Nephtoglobin Remnants
Remnants are listed separately from capacity, sufferance, and extraction. Treat them as a distinct part of the resource-support path and verify the actual effect before spending a large share of your refunded points. A reset is useful precisely because it lets you move points away from a node whose behavior does not fit your play pattern.

Status Buildup supports a plan built around applying effects rather than relying only on immediate raw damage. It can be a better destination when you use Transmutations to create an opening for melee attacks or to control an encounter. Because the tree’s wording is the authoritative description for your version, compare the listed status interaction with the powers you actually use before committing.
Healing Effectiveness
Healing Effectiveness appears among the documented Transmutation-related choices. It is relevant to a sustain-focused build that uses its power set to survive longer encounters. If your problem is dying before a resource or status strategy pays off, moving every point into damage may not address the underlying issue; a small investment in healing support can be the more appropriate experiment.
Combined Nephtoglobin and Transmutation upgrades
The skill tree also includes combined upgrades that reference both Nephtoglobin and Transmutation. These can suit a generalist build that wants resource stability and offensive value without specializing in only one category. Compare their cost and description with the more focused nodes before spending the final points.
Does respec change which Transmutations you have unlocked?
No documented source describes the Lantern reset as an unlock-selection system. The available progression description treats Transmutations as powers acquired from unique plague-infected humanoids, while the Lantern procedure returns skill-tree points. On that evidence, you should expect a respec to preserve the powers you have obtained and change only the investments that support them.
This distinction matters if you are trying to solve an access problem. If a particular Transmutation is missing, revisiting the relevant progression route or the unique infected humanoid associated with that power is a different task from resetting your build. A reset cannot be relied upon as a shortcut to an unearned ability.

How much Catalyst does a respec cost?
Catalyst is required at the confirmation stage. Guides agree that the fee rises as you progress or perform additional resets, so a respec is a currency decision rather than a free menu experiment.
All Things How published a third-party cost sequence in 2026 that begins at 50 Catalysts and rises in steps to 15,000 Catalysts. The detailed intermediate values should be treated as a reference, not a guaranteed universal price table: the amount shown by your Lantern is the one that applies to your character, version, and current reset history.

Games.gg and Treyex Gaming guides published in 2026 also describe the fee as increasing with progression or repeated resets. Since guide figures can lag behind patches, do not spend Catalyst based solely on a remembered amount from a video, post, or older playthrough.

A respec is most valuable when it fixes a defined problem. Write down what is failing in your current build before opening the Lantern menu. The answer usually falls into one of three broad categories: you are too fragile, your ordinary attacks are not keeping pace, or your Transmutation resource and effects are not supporting the way you fight.
If stamina or defense is the problem
Start by identifying the moment you lose control: running out of stamina, failing to survive a hit, or being unable to recover after a mistake. Refund points from low-impact offensive or resource nodes only after checking whether the tree investment is actually responsible. Reassign enough points to address the defensive or stamina attribute that limits your encounters, then test the result before buying another reset.
If melee damage or health is the problem
A Transmutation-focused character still needs a workable close-range plan when a power is unavailable, expensive, or poorly matched to a target. If ordinary attacks are the source of your failed fights, move part of the refunded allocation into melee damage or health rather than forcing every point into Transmutation Damage. This creates a hybrid build that can keep fighting while Nephtoglobin recovers or while a status effect develops.

If Nephtoglobin use is the problem
Separate a capacity problem from a performance problem. If you frequently have no resource available, inspect capacity, sufferance, extraction, and remnants. If you have enough resource but the power does too little, Transmutation Damage may be the more direct answer. If a status strategy fails to trigger in time, examine Status Buildup. Making this diagnosis first prevents an expensive reset from simply moving points between unrelated symptoms.
If healing is the problem
Healing Effectiveness belongs in the discussion when your build survives individual hits but cannot sustain itself through a long sequence of encounters. Compare that investment with health and defensive attributes. The best choice depends on whether you are losing because each hit is too large or because your recovery tools do not restore enough to keep you in the fight.
How to choose between a focused and hybrid Transmutation build

There is no evidence that one universal allocation is required. The reset exists so you can respond to your own failure pattern, and the Lantern’s current descriptions should take precedence over generalized build advice.

The reset command is not visible
Confirm that you are interacting with a Lantern rather than opening a different character screen. Rest at the Lantern, enter the level-up or skill menu, and inspect all available commands. The wording may be reset level, reset skills, or respec, so do not search only for one exact phrase. If the menu still lacks the command, check whether your game version uses a different tab or requires the level-up screen to be opened before management options appear.
The game will not let you confirm
Read the confirmation panel for the Catalyst requirement. An unavailable or disabled confirm control can indicate that you do not have enough Catalyst. It can also mean that focus is still on a different menu item; move the selection to the reset command and use the button displayed by the current platform prompt.

The price is higher than expected
Use the amount displayed in the Lantern rather than a guide’s example. The 2026 cost references describe an increasing fee, and the published sequence beginning at 50 and ending at 15,000 is not a promise that every character sees the same intermediate values. Progression, previous resets, balance changes, or version differences can make an older number inapplicable.

Your Transmutation power did not change
That is the expected result if you were trying to alter the supporting skill allocation. The reset refunds points; it is not documented as a power replacement system. Reopen the skill tree and verify that your refunded points were assigned to the intended damage, Nephtoglobin, status, or healing nodes.
You have unspent points after the reset
Return to the level-up or skill menu and review every category. A reset can return points without automatically spending them. Leave the Lantern only after checking the available total and confirming that the attributes and upgrades you want are selected.
When to postpone a respec
Postpone the reset when you have not identified a specific problem, when the displayed Catalyst fee would consume currency needed for another immediate purpose, or when you are relying on an old cost estimate instead of the current confirmation screen. A reset is a useful correction tool, but its rising price makes repeated trial-and-error less efficient.
It is also sensible to wait if you have just obtained a new Transmutation or have not yet tested the current one in several encounter types. Since powers come from progression, a new acquisition can change which support nodes are valuable. Test the power with the allocation you already have, identify whether the limitation is damage, resource, status buildup, or recovery, and then make one deliberate change.
Version and source caveats
The instructions above reflect the Lantern and skill-tree behavior described by 2026 game guides. Menu labels, displayed prices, and balance values can change after a patch. The exact controller and keyboard confirmation buttons were not consistently documented, so the prompt visible on your platform is authoritative.
The Catalyst figures should be read with the same caution. Games.gg and Treyex Gaming describe an increasing fee, while All Things How gives a third-party sequence with 50 Catalysts at the beginning and 15,000 Catalysts at the top end. Those references establish the direction and reported range, not a permanent in-game tariff for every character.
