In Enshrouded, you can rebuild your character at any claimed Flame Altar. Open the skill tree, use its reset control, pay the Rune fee for the points you refund, and spend those points again along connected nodes. The tree has no class lock, so a character can move between Ranger, Mage, Warrior, and hybrid routes as weapons, gear, or group responsibilities change.
The most reliable first build is not a pure damage rush. Secure stamina, movement, parry, and survival utility, then specialize around the weapon and damage element you actually use. Keep some points uncommitted or choose flexible nodes so a new weapon, resistance requirement, or co-op role does not force an expensive full rebuild.

A respec refunds skill points from your current tree so you can assign them elsewhere. It does not permanently choose a class: Ranger, Mage, Warrior, and shared core skills are available to the same character. The tree is connected, however, so refunded points must be routed through prerequisite nodes before you can reach deeper perks.
Respeccing is therefore useful for correcting a few inefficient choices, changing weapon types, adapting to a new damage element, or moving from a solo setup to a co-op role. It is not free, so a complete change of archetype should be planned rather than performed every time you find a different weapon.

Where to reset your skill points
Use any claimed Flame Altar. Flame Altars serve as base anchors and fast-travel points as well as the place where the skill-tree reset is performed. You do not need to travel back to an early-game location; a developed base with a claimed altar can be your respec station.
Have Runes available before opening the reset menu. The fee is based on the number of points you refund, so a small correction costs less than removing an entire late-game path. If you are changing from a melee build to a spell build, gather enough Runes first and make the change in one deliberate visit.
How to respec, step by step
- Travel to a claimed Flame Altar. Choose the altar at your base or another established fast-travel location.
- Open the skill-tree interface. The tree shows your currently unlocked nodes and the paths leading to other branches.
- Select the reset or respec control. Review which points will be returned before confirming.
- Pay the Rune cost. The current rule is one Rune for every skill point being refunded.
- Plan the route before spending. Because nodes must connect to previously unlocked nodes, identify the prerequisite chain for your target perk instead of clicking isolated damage nodes.
- Reassign and confirm. Start with the core and movement choices that support your equipment, then purchase specialization nodes and verify that the resulting path matches your weapon, armor, and role.
If the reset screen shows a different fee or behavior after a major patch, follow the value displayed in your current game client. Patch changes can alter skill trees and node requirements.
How many skill points you can earn
The documented point sources are character levels, Shroud Roots, and Elixir Wells:
| Source | Points awarded | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Character level | Two points per level | Earned as your character levels. |
| Shroud Root | One point per completed root | The official-wiki search result lists 39 Shroud Roots; treat that count as patch-sensitive. |
| Elixir Well | Three points per completed well | The total number of wells is not stated here, so do not use an assumed maximum. |
A practical estimate for a character is therefore:
total points = (character level × 2) + (completed Shroud Roots × 1) + (completed Elixir Wells × 3)
This is a planning formula, not a promise of a permanent maximum. The 39-root figure and node availability can change with updates. Recheck the current in-game map and tree after a major patch before committing to a final-point build.

Ranger
Ranger branches focus on ranged combat and survival. They are a natural fit for bows and other distance-based weapons, but a Ranger-leaning character can still take shared mobility, stamina, and defensive nodes.

Mage
Mage branches support magic and utility. They are appropriate when your equipment and damage loop are spell-driven, especially if you can sustain the required resources and have enough defenses to survive when enemies close the distance.
Warrior
Warrior branches support melee combat. They reward a character that stays in striking range and can use parries, stamina management, and defensive timing consistently.
Shared core and hybrid branches
Core skills sit outside the three main paths and can improve almost any character. Overlapping branches such as Trickster, Athlete, and Tank create practical hybrid routes. A hybrid is not a compromise by definition: it can solve a specific problem, such as combining ranged damage with mobility or melee damage with stronger survivability.
Every purchase should be evaluated as part of a connected route. A powerful node that is unreachable without several weak-looking prerequisites may be less efficient for your current level than a nearby utility node that immediately improves your combat loop.
A reliable order for your first allocation
Early points are broadly useful because your weapon collection, armor, and available resources are still changing. Use this sequence as a default, then depart from it when your equipment or role demands something else.
1. Buy inexpensive stamina and sprint improvements
Stamina affects attacks, evasive movement, climbing, and other actions. Early stamina and sprint improvements help every archetype and reduce the number of situations in which you must stop attacking to recover. They also make exploration and gathering less frustrating while you are still establishing a base.
2. Unlock movement tools
Prioritize movement options such as glider and grappling-hook access where applicable to your current progression. Mobility is both an exploration benefit and a combat resource: it helps you choose distance, escape attacks, reach advantageous terrain, and reposition for a better angle.

3. Add parry and immediate survivability
Power Parry is one of the named cross-build priorities because a successful defensive timing can create an opening regardless of whether your eventual damage path is Ranger, Mage, or Warrior. Nearby health, mitigation, or other survival nodes are usually more valuable early than a narrow damage increase you cannot yet support with matching gear.
4. Take combat-loop utility
Merciless Attack can be considered when your play style reliably creates the conditions it requires. Saviour is relevant when recovery or revive utility matters, particularly in a group. Choose these according to how you actually fight rather than treating the names as mandatory picks.
5. Specialize around current equipment
Once your stamina, movement, and basic defenses are adequate, spend on damage nodes that match both your weapon type and the damage element on your equipped gear. A node that boosts a damage category you are not using delays the improvements that your current loadout can exploit.
6. Keep room for change
Do not assume your first weapon or armor set is permanent. Leaving a few points in flexible shared routes, or avoiding an unnecessary deep branch until your equipment stabilizes, reduces the Rune cost of your next correction.
Choosing between Ranger, Mage, Warrior, and hybrid builds
There is no universally best path. Compare a build on the factors that determine whether it works in your actual play session:
| Build direction | Weapon and gear synergy | Stamina and mobility | Survivability and revive utility | Resource demands | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ranger | Ranged weapons and matching ranged damage bonuses | Benefits from distance control and movement tools | Needs a plan for enemies that reach melee range | Depends on ammunition and the economy of your ranged attacks | Players who prefer spacing, scouting, and sustained ranged pressure |
| Mage | Spell-focused gear and the relevant magic damage element | Mobility creates time to cast and reposition | Requires defenses for interrupted or close-range casting | Depends on the resources and spell rotation your loadout uses | Players who want magic damage and utility |
| Warrior | Melee weapons, parry timing, and close-range bonuses | Stamina management is central to attacks and evasions | Can pair naturally with defensive and tank-oriented nodes | Usually trades ammunition concerns for stamina and positioning demands | Players comfortable fighting inside enemy attack ranges |
| Hybrid | Combines only when both sides are supported by actual gear | Can solve a mobility or range weakness through shared nodes | Often gains utility at the cost of a deeper damage specialization | May require managing more than one resource or weapon set | Players with a defined gap to fill, or co-op groups that need flexible roles |
Use the table as a decision framework, not a ranking. A Ranger with poor ammunition access, a Mage without suitable spell gear, or a Warrior who cannot manage stamina may perform worse than a less fashionable but better-supported hybrid.
Practical solo build templates
Flexible explorer
For a new or returning solo character, begin with stamina and sprint improvements, then movement tools, Power Parry, and nearby survival nodes. Add one primary damage route only after your main weapon and armor are established. This setup is forgiving during exploration because it improves travel, repositioning, and the ability to recover from mistakes before committing to a narrow specialization.

Ranged solo setup
Use the flexible explorer foundation, then follow Ranger connections that match the bow or other ranged weapon you actually carry. Keep enough stamina and defensive utility to escape a rush. If you frequently run out of ammunition or cannot maintain distance in a particular area, a small investment in shared survivability can produce more real damage than another specialized ranged node.
Spell-focused solo setup
Start with movement and defensive timing so casting does not leave you helpless. Follow Mage connections that correspond to your equipped spell damage and resource loop. Avoid buying every available spell-related branch simply because it is accessible; choose the spells you can sustain and use consistently, then reserve points for defenses against enemies that close the gap.
Melee solo setup
Take stamina, Power Parry, and survivability before pushing deeply into Warrior damage. Close-range combat magnifies the cost of a missed dodge or mistimed attack, so a modest defensive investment can preserve more uptime than a glass-cannon route. Add Warrior damage that matches your weapon rather than a generic melee category you are not using.
Hybrid and co-op planning
When a hybrid is worthwhile
Spend across paths only when the second path solves a concrete problem. Examples include adding mobility to a slow melee setup, taking ranged options to handle flying or unreachable targets, or adding defensive utility to a fragile spell build. Trickster, Athlete, and Tank branches are useful places to look for these connections, but the correct choice depends on the nodes required to reach your main damage route.
Recommended Free Tools
Build for the group you actually have
In co-op, reserve some points for support utility instead of duplicating identical damage paths. Saviour may be valuable when your group benefits from stronger recovery options. A player who can maintain pressure while providing mobility, survivability, or rescue utility can contribute more than a second character with the same narrow damage specialization.
Coordinate equipment before respeccing
Agree on weapon roles and damage elements before spending a large number of Runes. If two players both depend on the same scarce ammunition or gear category, a flexible secondary route may be more practical than copying the same build. Recheck the plan when the group composition or equipment changes.

- Power Parry: supports a defensive combat loop that can benefit melee and hybrid characters.
- Merciless Attack: suits players who can consistently create and exploit its attack opportunity.
- Saviour: favors recovery and revive utility, especially in co-op.
- Mason: supports a resource or construction-oriented play style when that utility is relevant to your settlement routine.
- Lumberjack: improves the value of a character who spends significant time gathering wood.
- Miner: is attractive when mining efficiency and resource gathering are part of your regular loop.
Utility nodes compete with damage nodes for the same finite points. Select them when they save meaningful time, reduce risk, or fill a role your party lacks; skip them when their benefit does not match how you play.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUpdate 8 and 1.0 migration details
The Forging the Path/Update 8 changes included a reset for existing characters. The official-wiki search result reports that, when an existing character first loaded into a world after the update, the character skill tree was reset and the skill points were refunded. If you are returning to an older save, inspect the tree and reassign your points before entering combat rather than assuming your previous build remains active.
Newer 1.0 options reported in the same update context include aerial wand attacks, wand evasion attacks, advanced necromancy, totem mastery, and additional spells. Exact node text should be checked in the current patch: descriptions were reportedly incorrect in some languages at launch. Treat the live in-game description as authoritative when it differs from an older guide.
Returning-player checklist
- Load the world and open the skill tree before fighting.
- Confirm whether your points were refunded and whether any nodes moved.
- Read the current descriptions for new or renamed abilities.
- Match the rebuilt path to your present weapon, armor, and damage element.
- Test the rotation in a low-risk area before spending more Runes on another change.
Common respec mistakes and fixes
Spending damage points before choosing a weapon
Symptom: your tree boosts a damage type that your best available weapon does not use.
Fix: return to shared stamina, movement, parry, or survival nodes until your equipment is settled, then respec into the matching damage branch.
Ignoring prerequisite connections
Symptom: you have enough unspent points but cannot reach the desired node.
Fix: trace the connected path from a currently unlocked node and budget for every prerequisite, including nodes that are utility rather than damage.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Attempting a full rebuild without enough Runes
Symptom: the reset cannot be completed, or you can refund only part of the intended route.
Fix: gather Runes first. Because the fee is charged per refunded point, make small, targeted corrections when a full archetype change is not affordable.
Copying a group build in solo play
Symptom: a support-heavy tree leaves you short on personal damage or defenses.
Fix: retain only the utility you can use alone and direct the freed points toward your weapon, mobility, and survival needs.
Trusting an outdated or mistranslated description
Symptom: a node behaves differently from an older guide or its wording seems inconsistent with the effect.
Fix: check the current patch and language-specific text in your client, especially for options introduced around the 1.0 changes.
Quick Recap
A repeatable decision process for every rebuild
- Define the change. Write down whether you are correcting a few nodes, changing weapons, changing elements, or changing from solo to co-op.
- Inventory your equipment. Identify the weapon type, damage element, armor strengths, ammunition or spell resources, and any resistance gap.
- Choose the minimum route. Start from your current useful nodes and trace the shortest connected path to the desired specialization.
- Protect universal utility. Keep enough stamina, movement, parry, and survival support to execute the new build safely.
- Budget the Rune fee. Count the points you intend to refund and gather one Rune for each before confirming.
- Test before deepening. Fight in a low-risk area, check resource consumption and survivability, and only then spend remaining points on narrower bonuses.
- Record what worked. Note the weapon, element, and role that the tree supports so the next respec is a targeted adjustment rather than a blind reset.
