To resize an iOS screenshot for the App Store, first choose the exact iPhone or iPad display group and orientation in Apple’s current specification table. Set your image editor to one of that group’s accepted pixel dimensions, crop rather than stretch if the aspect ratio differs, then export as JPEG/JPG or PNG with transparency removed. App Store Connect can downscale a highest-resolution screenshot when the interface is identical across device sizes and localizations.
Choose the correct App Store screenshot dimensions first
There is no single “iPhone screenshot size.” App Store Connect validates dimensions against the display group selected for your listing. Decide whether the asset is for iPhone or iPad, identify the display group, and choose portrait or landscape before opening an editor.
| Target group | Portrait dimensions accepted | Landscape dimensions |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 6.9-inch | 1260 × 2736, 1290 × 2796, or 1320 × 2868 pixels | Swap width and height for the corresponding landscape size |
| iPad 13-inch | 2064 × 2752 or 2048 × 2732 pixels | Swap width and height for the corresponding landscape size |
These are examples from Apple’s current specification groups, not universal targets. Device groups and accepted sizes can change, so check the live App Store Connect screenshot specification immediately before exporting. A portrait image must use the portrait dimensions; rotating the device conceptually does not make a portrait file valid for a landscape slot.
Decide whether to provide custom screenshots or let Apple scale them
Use automatic downscaling when the UI is truly consistent
Apple permits a shortcut when your app’s interface is the same across device sizes and localizations: provide only the highest-resolution screenshots required, and App Store Connect scales them down for smaller supported sizes. This reduces repetitive editing, but it is appropriate only when the composition, text, controls and localization do not change in ways that would make the scaled result unsuitable.

Use Media Manager for differences
Provide custom files through Media Manager when a device group needs a different composition, when portrait and landscape layouts differ, or when localized text changes the design. Custom screenshots also let you keep important controls away from a crop edge and tune the visual hierarchy for a particular screen size.
Prepare the source capture
- Capture from a suitable source. Use an iOS Simulator or a physical device that represents the interface you want to show. Apple documents both simulated and physical-device capture workflows.
- Check orientation. Keep a portrait source for a portrait listing and a landscape source for a landscape listing whenever possible.
- Inspect the full frame. Look for status-bar artifacts, simulator chrome, accidental pointer indicators, clipped text and transient loading states. Remove anything that is not part of the intended app presentation before export.
- Keep the original file. Work from an uncompressed copy so that repeated resizing does not compound JPEG artifacts.
Resize and crop without distorting the interface
When the aspect ratio already matches
In your image editor, open the image dimensions panel, enable proportional scaling, and enter the exact target width and height for the selected App Store slot. If the source and target ratios match, a proportional resize preserves every element without cropping.
When the aspect ratio is different
Do not unlock the aspect-ratio constraint and stretch the screenshot. Instead, crop excess canvas or compose the screenshot on a background that fits the required ratio. Place the crop so that navigation, primary actions and readable text remain visible. Apple specifically describes resizing and cropping as the remedy when a simulator capture has a different size or ratio from a physical-device capture, including visionOS Simulator captures.
When cropping would remove important content
Return to the simulator or device and capture a layout that naturally matches the target ratio. If that is impossible, redesign the marketing composition around the screenshot rather than shrinking text until it is illegible. A technically valid pixel size is not useful if the App Store preview hides the feature you are demonstrating.

Export a file App Store Connect accepts
- Format: export as JPEG, JPG or PNG.
- Transparency: remove the alpha channel and any transparent pixels. Apple states that screenshots cannot include transparency.
- Pixel dimensions: verify the exported file, not only the editor canvas, against the selected display group.
- Orientation: confirm width is greater than height for landscape and height is greater than width for portrait.
- Quality: use a quality setting that keeps text and fine UI edges clean; avoid repeated JPEG re-exports.
App Store Connect accepts from one to ten screenshots for a screenshot set. Required sizes depend on the platform and asset set, and missing required sizes or invalid dimensions can produce a submission error.
Upload and validate in App Store Connect
- Open your app in App Store Connect and go to the platform version’s screenshots section.
- Select the iPhone or iPad display group and the correct orientation.
- Upload the exported files. If your interface is consistent, upload the highest required resolution and allow Apple’s downscaling; otherwise, add the custom files needed for each group or localization in Media Manager.
- Wait for processing and read any dimension or format validation message. Replace the file that fails rather than renaming it or changing only its extension.
- Review the rendered previews at every localization and device group before submitting the version.
Common resizing failures and fixes
“The screenshot has an invalid size”
Cause: the file matches another device group, uses a near-but-not-exact dimension, or was exported with width and height reversed. Fix: return to the current Apple table, select the exact slot, and enter one of its listed pixel pairs. Check the final file metadata after export.
The image looks stretched
Cause: proportional scaling was disabled. Fix: undo the transform, restore the original, lock the aspect ratio, then crop or recompose to the target canvas.
Important controls are cut off
Cause: a center crop removed content near an edge. Fix: reposition the crop around the app’s primary content, or capture a source layout with the target ratio. Do not solve this by making the entire screenshot so small that labels become unreadable.

App Store Connect rejects the format or transparency
Cause: the export retained an alpha channel, or the file is not JPEG/JPG/PNG. Fix: flatten the image onto an opaque background and export again in one of Apple’s supported formats.
A single high-resolution file produces poor smaller previews
Cause: the interface is not actually identical across device sizes or localizations. Fix: provide custom screenshots through Media Manager for the affected groups instead of relying on automatic downscaling.
A simulator capture has an unusual ratio
Cause: simulator output can differ from a physical-device capture. Fix: resize and crop to an accepted App Store dimension while keeping the important UI visible, or recapture from a matching device profile.
Quality, consistency and maintenance checklist
- Record the target group, orientation and exact pixel dimensions beside each source file.
- Use the same app state, account data and content in every screenshot unless a localization requires otherwise.
- Check long translated strings before deciding that one universal screenshot can be downscaled.
- Keep opaque backgrounds and avoid semi-transparent overlays that may export with an alpha channel.
- Review both portrait and landscape sets independently; swapping dimensions is not a substitute for a deliberate landscape composition.
- Recheck Apple’s live specification before each release because accepted device groups are subject to change.
Or skip the browser setup
If your “source screenshot” is a web page, you can capture it directly with ScreenshotNeo instead of configuring a browser or simulator. It is a website screenshot API, so it does not replace a native iOS-device capture; use it for web-based app previews, documentation pages or marketing pages that you then resize for an App Store composition.

FAQ
Can I upload one screenshot for every iPhone model?
Usually you work by Apple’s display groups rather than by marketing model name. Select the group shown in the current specification table and satisfy its required dimensions.
Should I use PNG or JPEG?
Both are supported. Choose the format that preserves your UI cleanly, and ensure the exported file has no alpha channel or transparency.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How many screenshots can one App Store listing contain?
Apple’s current allowance is one to ten screenshots per set; the required sizes still depend on the platform and asset configuration.
Best Value
- The large 6.9-inch display combines ProMotion 120Hz technology with advanced color calibration, giving movies, games, and productivity apps a spacious, crisp, and fluid visual experience that’s ideal for multitasking or immersive media consumption.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I resize a screenshot by changing only its file extension?
No. The pixel dimensions and encoded format must be valid; renaming a file does not convert it or change its dimensions.
Does automatic downscaling create screenshots for different localizations?
Only use it when the interface is consistent across the relevant sizes and localizations. Otherwise upload localized or device-specific files in Media Manager.
The Bottom Line
Match the exact Apple display group and orientation, crop instead of stretching, export an opaque JPEG/JPG or PNG, and validate the final pixels in App Store Connect. Recheck Apple’s live specifications whenever you prepare a new release.
