A blank Command Prompt window is expected; Microsoft says it closes after about ten seconds, then Microsoft Store opens automatically.
Reset the Microsoft Store cache with wsreset.exe
- Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
- Type
wsreset.exeand select OK. - Wait for the blank Command Prompt window to close. Microsoft says this usually takes about ten seconds, after which Microsoft Store opens automatically. See Microsoft’s cache-reset instructions.
- Try the Store action that was failing, such as opening the Store, finding the app, or starting its installation.
The blank window is part of the expected process; you do not need to type anything into it. This command resets the Microsoft Store cache. It is not the Windows Reset this PC recovery operation, and it does not guarantee a fix for every Store or app problem.
If Microsoft Store still will not open
First check that Windows is up to date, then verify that the device’s time and location settings are correct. Microsoft recommends these checks for Store launch problems; see Microsoft Store doesn’t open.
If you cannot find Microsoft Store, search for it from Start. Its availability can also depend on whether you use a local account or whether an administrator has applied a policy to a work device. Microsoft explains these possibilities in Can’t find Microsoft Store app.

If an app from the Store will not work
For a problem with an app you downloaded from Microsoft Store, Microsoft’s recommended sequence is to close and reopen the app, check for Windows updates, check whether the app is compatible with your device, and install available Store updates. To update Store apps, open Microsoft Store and go to Library > Get updates. If the issue continues, consider repairing or resetting the app, then reinstalling it if needed. Repair or reset the app in Settings
- Go to Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the app, open its menu, and select Advanced options.
- Select Repair if the option is available.
- If Repair is unavailable or does not resolve the problem, select Reset, if that option is available.
Windows does not provide these recovery controls for every app. The steps and availability are described in Microsoft’s guide to repairing apps and programs.

If an app is missing or cannot be installed
A cache reset cannot make an app available if another restriction or requirement is responsible. Microsoft lists possible causes such as country or region availability, family settings, an app having been removed from the Store, device incompatibility, a restart required after a recent Windows update, or device and account authorization. Check the relevant condition rather than treating every missing listing or blocked install as a cache fault; Microsoft outlines these causes in its app search and installation guidance.
