First check whether your Mac uses an Intel processor or Apple silicon. The Option-Command-P-R shortcut for resetting NVRAM/PRAM applies to Intel Macs, and an SMC reset is for Intel Macs only. Apple says an SMC reset is not needed on Apple silicon Macs.
Check whether your Mac is Intel or Apple silicon
Reset instructions depend on the processor generation. Apple’s Mac startup key combinations reference says a Mac that is not Apple silicon is Intel-based. If you can start the Mac, check the processor information in About This Mac. If you cannot, use the applicable startup behavior: on an Apple silicon Mac, shut down and hold the power button until startup options appear.
Reset NVRAM or PRAM on an Intel Mac
NVRAM (formerly called PRAM) stores certain settings the Mac can access quickly at startup. Apple documents the same startup shortcut for resetting NVRAM or PRAM on Intel-based Macs: Option (⌥)-Command (⌘)-P-R.
- Shut down your Mac.
- Turn it on and immediately press and hold Option-Command-P-R together.
- Keep holding the keys through startup. If the combination does not work, shut down and try again. Apple notes that a wireless keyboard may not be recognized early enough; use the built-in keyboard or connect a wired keyboard if possible.
This is a troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix. Apple’s startup key combination guidance applies the shortcut to Intel Macs; do not use it as an Apple silicon SMC-reset procedure.

Reset the SMC only on an Intel Mac
The System Management Controller (SMC) handles hardware-related functions. It is separate from NVRAM/PRAM, so an SMC reset is a different troubleshooting path. Apple’s Mac power troubleshooting identifies SMC reset guidance for Intel-based Macs and states: “You don’t need to do this on a Mac with Apple silicon.”
Intel SMC reset steps vary by Mac model and configuration. Use Apple’s current instructions for your exact Intel Mac rather than trying a single key sequence found for a different model. The relevant Apple support article provides the model-specific route; do not assume an SMC reset will resolve the problem.

If your Mac will not turn on
Try Apple’s basic power checks before moving to a reset. Its steps for a Mac that doesn’t turn on are:
- Check that the power cable is undamaged and firmly connected to a working outlet.
- Hold the power button for about 10 seconds, release it, then press it normally.
- Disconnect accessories from the Mac and try again.
If the Mac is Intel-based, Apple points to its SMC guidance after these checks. If it still will not turn on, Apple says it may need service.

Use Recovery for recovery tasks, not as an SMC reset
If you need macOS Recovery on an Apple silicon Mac, shut down, then press and hold the power button until startup options appear. Select Options to enter Recovery. Apple’s Apple silicon Recovery guide explains that Recovery includes tools such as disk repair and macOS reinstall. These are separate from resetting NVRAM/PRAM or the SMC; reinstalling macOS or erasing a disk has different consequences, so do not treat those actions as part of a reset.
