If your Oculus—now branded Meta Quest—is malfunctioning, try Meta’s software update tool first, then hold the headset’s power button for 30 seconds to hard-reboot it. Factory reset is a last resort: it erases account information, downloaded games, and content stored on the headset. If you do need to reset, you can use the headset buttons, the paired Meta Horizon app, or remote device controls for a lost or stolen headset.
Try these steps before a factory reset
Meta describes a factory reset as a last-resort way to solve device issues. Start with its software update tool, which Meta says can update the headset even when it is unresponsive. If the problem remains, hold the headset’s power button for 30 seconds, until it turns back on.
What a factory reset erases—and what to check first
A factory reset is irreversible. Meta says it removes account information, downloaded games, and content from the headset, but purchased or downloaded content remains associated with your account. You will need to set up the headset again afterward.
- Check cloud backup: Meta says cloud backup can save app data and settings. Confirm it is enabled and current, but do not assume every app’s local save data is backed up.
- Charge the headset: Meta recommends at least 50% battery before starting a reset.
Choose the right reset method

How do I factory reset my Oculus Quest from the headset?
- Turn the headset off.
- Hold the power and volume-down buttons together until the boot screen loads.
- Use the volume buttons to highlight Factory Reset, then press the power button.
- Highlight Yes and press the power button to confirm.
How do I reset my Meta Quest with the Meta Horizon app?
This route works only if the headset is already paired with the app. On your phone, open Meta Horizon and follow this path:

- Tap Menu, then Devices, and select the headset.
- Tap Headset settings → Advanced settings → Factory reset → Reset.
If the headset is not paired, use the headset-button method instead. Interface labels may change; if yours differ, follow the support flow for your specific device.
How do I reset a lost or stolen Meta Quest without the app?
For a lost or stolen headset, use the device controls in your Meta Account rather than treating remote reset as routine troubleshooting:

- Select the headset in your account’s device settings.
- Choose Delete device data or Factory reset, then complete identity verification.
Meta says the headset resets the next time it comes online and disappears from your device list when the reset is complete. The remote option may not appear on some software versions.

Meta’s Help Center has a notice that it is aware of issues affecting Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest 3S and is working to resolve them. The notice does not describe the symptoms, so it is not enough to identify the cause or determine whether a reset will help. If you have one of these models, select that exact device in Meta Quest support and follow its current guidance.

A Meta developer issue record describes an older Quest 1 pairing and update issue after factory reset, with a fix reported as shipped on July 30, 2025. That historical record does not establish Quest 1’s current support status or explain other setup problems; consult the support flow for your device if setup fails.
A reset returns the headset to factory settings; Meta’s instructions do not establish that it generally improves performance. Use it to address a persistent device issue only after trying the update tool and hard reboot, or to protect data on hardware you have lost.
