There is no single reset procedure for every laptop mouse. First identify how yours connects: a Bluetooth mouse needs to be paired again in the laptop’s Bluetooth settings, while a wireless mouse with a USB receiver needs that receiver reconnected. Use a model-specific reset button or sequence only if the manufacturer’s instructions specify one.
First identify how the mouse connects
Look for a small USB receiver plugged into the laptop, check the mouse’s manual, or inspect the mouse for its connection type. A mouse that uses a USB receiver is not a Bluetooth device, so it will not appear in the laptop’s Bluetooth device list.
- Bluetooth: The mouse pairs directly with the laptop over Bluetooth.
- USB receiver: The mouse communicates through a small receiver plugged into a USB port.
Check the mouse’s power and pairing state
Recharge the mouse or replace its battery if needed, switch it off and back on, and keep it within range of the laptop. A low battery can prevent some Bluetooth devices from entering pairing mode or maintaining a connection, according to Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance.
If it is a Bluetooth mouse, put it into pairing mode using the method in its manual. The exact control varies by model; do not assume every mouse uses the same button or hold duration.

Reset a Bluetooth mouse connection in Windows
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices and confirm Bluetooth is on.
- Find the mouse, select More options (…), then choose Remove device.
- Put the mouse into pairing mode. In Settings, select Add device, choose Bluetooth, and select the mouse when it appears.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices and confirm Bluetooth is on.
- Select the mouse and choose Remove device.
- Put the mouse into pairing mode, select Add Bluetooth or other device, and choose the mouse when it appears.
These Windows steps are documented by Microsoft Support. If pairing still fails, Microsoft also recommends toggling Bluetooth, checking Windows Update, and restarting the laptop.
Reconnect a mouse that uses a USB receiver
- Unplug the receiver from the laptop, wait briefly, then reconnect it.
- If the mouse still does not work, try a different USB port.
- Check the mouse manual for a model-specific reset procedure. Some wireless devices have a reset button on the mouse or the USB receiver, but this is not universal.
Microsoft’s mouse troubleshooting guidance describes resetting a wireless device as disconnecting and reconnecting its wireless connection and notes that some receivers may have a reset button. Follow the instructions for your specific model rather than guessing at a button sequence.

If the mouse still will not connect
- Try the mouse with another computer, if available. If it fails there too, consult the manufacturer’s support for that model.
- If using a receiver, test another device in the laptop’s USB port to help determine whether the port is the problem.
- For Bluetooth, check that the laptop’s Bluetooth is enabled and that the mouse remains in pairing mode while you add it.
- Consider replacement only after checking power, connection type, and whether the problem follows the mouse to another computer.
When replacing a mouse, check that its connection method works with the laptop, that the laptop has a compatible port if a receiver is required, and that its power needs and operating-system compatibility fit your setup.
