If a new WordPress user says they did not receive a welcome email, first check whether WordPress or the account-creation plugin generated it. If it appears in an email log with its content stored, you can replay it using that logger’s resend feature. If it is absent, use the registration or membership plugin’s own fresh-send option; WordPress core does not document a general resend control for existing users.

First identify how the account was created

Before sending anything, determine whether the recipient is a newly registered user or an existing account, and whether the site is a standard single-site installation or WordPress Multisite. Also identify the tool that created the account: a membership, commerce, social-login, import, or custom registration plugin may generate its own welcome message and expose its own resend controls.

WordPress documents wp_new_user_notification() for notifications associated with new user registration. Its notification choices cover the administrator, the user, or both; this reference does not document a built-in button to resend the message later for an existing account.

Resend a message already recorded in WP Mail SMTP

If your site uses WP Mail SMTP and the welcome email is present in its Email Log, the documented resend flow replays that logged email. Email logging must be enabled, and the Log Email Content option must have stored the message content. The WP Mail SMTP guide was updated January 12, 2024; menu labels or feature availability may vary with the installed version.

  1. In WordPress admin, open WP Mail SMTP » Email Log.
  2. Find the message for the recipient by subject or date, then open it by selecting its subject.
  3. Choose Resend, confirm the recipient, and submit the resend.

These steps replay a recorded message; they do not create a welcome email that was never generated or logged. If the resend control is unavailable, check the installed WP Mail SMTP version and its logging settings.

If the welcome email is not in the log

A log cannot replay a message it did not record. Check the account-creation plugin’s user profile, registration settings, or email tools for an action that sends a fresh welcome message. The precise control depends on the plugin or custom workflow that created the account; the WordPress core reference does not establish a universal procedure for resending an existing user’s welcome email.

Do not recreate the user just to trigger a notification. The documented log-resend workflow does not require creating another account, and creating a duplicate or changing the account may cause avoidable problems.

Check the logging plugin’s edition

Resend availability depends on the logger as well as its settings. The Email Log plugin listing on WordPress.org describes resend as a Pro feature. Check the edition installed on your site and its current feature list before relying on a resend button.

Troubleshoot mail delivery separately

If welcome messages generally fail to arrive, check the configured sending route and send a test message. WP Mail SMTP’s Resend mailer setup guide, updated March 26, 2026, says to verify the sending domain before using the plugin’s email test tool.

A successful test indicates that the configured route can send that test; it does not prove the missing welcome email was generated, delivered, or placed in the recipient’s inbox. Check the recipient address and spam folder as well, and use the email log to investigate the specific message when available.

For WordPress Multisite activation emails

Multisite has a separate welcome-notification path for users whose account activation has succeeded. WordPress documents wpmu_welcome_user_notification() for this event, with filters for the email content and subject. Confirm the account’s activation state and use the network’s applicable account workflow rather than assuming single-site registration steps apply.
