Start with the newest Form 10-K and Form 10-Q for each company, not with a trailer, a game announcement or a market-size headline. Read the business description, management’s discussion and analysis (MD&A), financial statements and notes, and risk factors. Then map how the publisher actually earns money, measure its dependence on franchises and platforms, check whether bookings become revenue and cash, and value the company under realistic delay and sales scenarios.
A gaming company can report strong growth while funding an expensive pipeline, paying platform fees, acquiring users or adding shares. Your watchlist should therefore record the durability and quality of earnings—not merely the next anticipated release.
Why game-stock research is different
Video-game publishers combine several businesses that behave differently. A new premium release may create a sharp sales peak, while downloadable content (DLC), subscriptions, advertising or recurring in-game purchases can produce revenue from an established player base. A mobile operator may spend heavily to acquire users; a console-focused publisher may depend on a small number of launches and on distributors it does not control.

The main questions your worksheet must answer
- What products and services generate revenue, and how launch-sensitive are they?
- Could one franchise, customer, platform or geography materially change the year?
- Do bookings, recognized revenue and operating cash flow reconcile over time?
- What development, marketing, user-acquisition and platform costs are required?
- Can the balance sheet fund delays and a large pipeline without damaging shareholders?
- What valuation remains reasonable if a release moves, sells less or costs more?
1. Pull the primary documents first
For each issuer, download the latest Form 10-K, latest Form 10-Q, earnings release, investor presentation and segment tables. Use the SEC filing as the controlling source for definitions and reported figures. Investor materials are useful for strategy and schedules, but check every important claim against the filing.
- Record the filing date and fiscal year end. Also note reporting currency, fiscal-period length and whether a later filing supersedes a number you copied.
- Read the 10-K in this order: Business; MD&A; Financial Statements and Notes; and Risk Factors. This sequence connects the business model to the numbers and then to the disclosed uncertainties.
- Use the newest 10-Q to update the picture. Look for changed release timing, impairments, restructuring, deferred revenue, debt, cash, share count and new legal or contractual commitments.
- Keep a source column in your notes. For every figure, write the filing, fiscal period, currency and whether it is GAAP, non-GAAP or management-defined.
Do not mix a calendar-year figure from one company with a 52-week or 53-week fiscal year from another. A peer comparison is only meaningful when the periods and definitions are aligned.
2. Map the revenue engine
Create a revenue map before comparing growth rates. Use the categories the issuer discloses; do not force every publisher into identical buckets when the accounting does not support that level of detail.

Add three additional dimensions to the map: platform (console, PC or mobile), geography and channel (digital, retail, first-party store or third-party store). Mark each line as launch-sensitive or dependent on a continuing player base. This exposes whether a seemingly diversified company is actually reliant on one platform or a few products.
Separate bookings, revenue and cash
Bookings are a management-defined measure of orders or digital items sold during a period; net revenue is the amount recognized under accounting rules; deferred revenue represents consideration for obligations that have not yet been delivered. Operating cash flow also reflects working-capital timing and the cash costs of development, marketing and user acquisition. None of these measures is interchangeable.
Copy each issuer’s definition from its notes or earnings release. Check whether bookings include items that will be recognized later, whether they are gross or net of platform fees, and whether the period and scope match the revenue figure. Then ask three questions:

- Do bookings convert into recognized revenue in a pattern consistent with the company’s explanation?
- How much future content, online hosting or service access must be delivered against deferred revenue?
- What development, marketing and player-acquisition spending is needed to generate the reported bookings?
3. Test franchise and release concentration
List the largest franchises, the titles scheduled for the next several fiscal periods, their announced platforms and the company’s development and marketing commitments. Record whether a release is complete, delayed, in testing or only planned. A planned game is a possible future sale, not guaranteed revenue.

Take-Two Interactive’s 2019 Form 10-K said Grand Theft Auto and certain other hit products had historically accounted for a substantial portion of revenue. That is an issuer-specific disclosure, not a universal industry ratio. The company’s more recent filing also identifies products such as Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption and NBA 2K as historically important contributors.
Build a concentration test
- Enter the percentage of revenue represented by each disclosed title, franchise or product group. If the issuer gives only qualitative language, record “qualitative concentration disclosed” rather than inventing a percentage.
- Compare the release calendar with the fiscal year. A launch in the first quarter and one in the fourth quarter have different recognition and cash-flow timing.
- Check capitalized development costs, impairment charges, marketing commitments and post-launch support obligations in the notes.
- Model a delay of one quarter and a weaker-than-planned launch. Follow the effect on revenue, gross margin, operating expenses, cash flow and the timing of development-cost recovery.
- Ask whether recurring spending from older games can cover fixed costs while the pipeline resets.
4. Examine platform and channel exposure
Publishers often reach customers through companies that control storefronts, network access, approval processes, payment rules and discoverability. Identify dependence on Sony PlayStation, Microsoft Xbox, Nintendo, Apple, Google, PC storefronts and other distributors disclosed by the issuer. Review platform fees, policy changes, approval requirements, network outages and changes to ranking or recommendation systems.
Take-Two reported that products for third-party video-game platforms represented 40.5% of net revenue for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2024. That is Take-Two’s company figure for that fiscal year, not an industry benchmark. Its filing also states: “We derive a significant portion of our revenue from the sale of products made for video game platforms manufactured by third parties.” Treat this type of disclosure as a measurable financial dependency.

5. Reconcile operating metrics with accounting
Non-GAAP metrics can reveal useful operating trends, but only after you understand their construction. Make a glossary for bookings, net bookings, net revenue, deferred revenue, daily or monthly active users, bookings per user, retention and any company-specific engagement measure.

For every metric, record its numerator, denominator, period, geography, platform coverage and exclusions. “Active users” may count an account once during a period, while “paying users” and “bookings per user” answer different questions. A rising user count with falling spending per user is not equivalent to profitable growth.

Questions that expose weak conversion
- Are bookings recognized as revenue immediately, or deferred until an update, service period or other obligation is delivered?
- Does revenue growth require proportionally higher marketing or user-acquisition expense?
- Are development costs capitalized and amortized later, making current profit look stronger than current cash generation?
- Do operating cash flow and free cash flow improve with revenue, or does the pipeline consume more cash?
- Are management’s adjustments removing recurring stock compensation, restructuring, impairment or acquisition costs?
6. Review financial quality and capital needs
Use at least three years of comparable filings where available, then update with the newest quarter. The objective is to see how earnings behave across launches, delays and investment cycles.

A publisher can grow revenue while cash conversion deteriorates because it is funding a large pipeline or buying users for mobile titles. Read the notes rather than treating free cash flow as automatically superior to earnings: development capitalization, working-capital swings and acquisitions can change the comparison.
7. Compare peers on a consistent scorecard
Choose companies with similar economics before comparing multiples. A platform operator, a mobile-heavy developer and a launch-driven console publisher should not be ranked on revenue growth alone.

Use identical fiscal periods and definitions wherever possible. If a value is not disclosed on a comparable basis, label it “not stated” and explain the limitation instead of estimating it from a different metric.
8. Stress-test the valuation
Build a base case, a downside case and—only when supported by evidence—an upside case. The purpose is not to predict a title precisely; it is to discover which assumptions control the share price.
Change the assumptions that actually move results
- Release timing: move a game by one quarter or one fiscal year.
- Sales volume and price: reduce units, average selling price or launch-week conversion.
- Recurring spending: lower retention, spending per user or update frequency.
- Acquisition economics: raise the cost of acquiring a player and lower the share that remains active.
- Platform fees: increase distribution costs or model a less favorable channel mix.
- Margins and marketing: reduce gross margin and increase launch support spending.
- Pipeline investment: extend development time and delay recovery of capitalized costs.
Match the valuation method to the company’s economics. Normalized earnings can help when launch timing creates temporary volatility; free-cash-flow valuation is useful when cash generation is representative; enterprise value to sales can be a cross-check when earnings are temporarily depressed, but it ignores differences in margin and reinvestment needs. Do not value an announced game as guaranteed revenue.

Write the result as a range, not a single target
For each case, show revenue, operating margin, operating cash flow or free cash flow, net cash or debt, diluted shares and the resulting per-share value. Identify the assumption that causes the largest change. A watchlist candidate should remain financially survivable in the downside case; a company that requires every major release to arrive on time and outperform may belong on a “monitor” list rather than an active idea.

Turn the work into a watchlist record
Use one page per issuer and update it after every 10-Q, 10-K and material release announcement. Keep reported facts separate from your assumptions.
- Filing date, fiscal year end, reporting currency and latest share count
- Revenue mix by product type, platform, geography and channel
- Largest franchises and concentration evidence
- Pipeline titles, expected timing and disclosed development or marketing commitments
- Bookings, net revenue, deferred revenue and active-user definitions
- Gross margin, operating margin, operating cash flow and free cash flow
- Cash, debt, maturities, acquisitions, impairments and contingencies
- Platform fees, policy exposure and customer or distributor concentration
- Base, downside and upside valuation assumptions
- The specific event that would change your thesis and the filing or metric that will confirm it
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Anchoring on a trailer or release date
Problem: Announcements describe possible demand, not recognized revenue or cash flow.
Fix: Verify timing, platform availability, accounting treatment, marketing cost and development commitments in filings.
Comparing bookings as if they were revenue
Problem: Companies define bookings differently and may defer recognition.
Fix: Copy each definition, align periods and trace bookings through deferred revenue, recognized revenue and cash.

Ignoring the platform owner
Problem: A publisher may appear diversified by title while remaining concentrated by storefront.
Fix: Calculate platform mix where disclosed and review fees, approval, discoverability and policy risks.
Using one launch year as “normal”
Problem: A blockbuster or a delay can distort a single year’s margins and multiple.
Fix: Use several comparable periods and value normalized earnings or cash generation under multiple release schedules.
Treating every adjusted item as harmless
Problem: Repeated restructuring, stock compensation, impairment or acquisition costs may be part of the business model.
Fix: Track each adjustment over time and decide whether it is genuinely nonrecurring before relying on adjusted profit.
When a stock earns a place on the watchlist
Add a company when you can explain its revenue engine, identify the risks that could change a fiscal year, reconcile its operating metrics with accounting, and produce a downside valuation that does not depend on flawless execution. Record the evidence and the next confirmation point—such as a filing, launch, retention update or cash-flow result—so the watchlist is a monitoring tool rather than a collection of hoped-for hits.
