Before buying an unfamiliar crypto token, verify its exact network and contract address, test the project’s claims against primary evidence, inspect who can control the contract, and assess token distribution and realistic exit liquidity. A checklist can help you find warning signs and unresolved questions; it cannot prove a token is safe or predict its price.

How do you confirm which token you are researching?

Start with the token’s identity, not its name or ticker. Different tokens can use the same name or symbol, and a search result, social post, or exchange listing can point to an imitation.

  1. Find the project’s official website or documentation independently. Do not rely on a link in an unsolicited message, search advertisement, or social post. Check that the site and its communication channels are consistent with one another.
  2. Record the network and full contract address. A token on one blockchain is not automatically the same asset as a token with the same name on another. Copy the address rather than relying on a ticker.
  3. Cross-check the address. Compare the address published by the project with the address shown for the same network by a blockchain explorer and a token information service. If they do not match, stop until you can explain the discrepancy using a reliable source.
  4. Keep the details together. Note the chain or network, contract address, token name and symbol, and the official project site. This makes it harder to confuse the asset with a similarly named token later.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends searching for the company or person and the cryptocurrency name together with terms such as “review,” “scam,” or “complaint.” That search is useful for discovering concerns, but it does not establish that an asset is legitimate.

What should you verify in the project’s claims?

Read the project’s white paper, technical documentation, and token disclosures as claims made by the issuer—not as independent confirmation. Look for specific, testable answers rather than broad promises about a future product or market.

  • Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
  • Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
  • Purpose: What problem is the project trying to solve, and what can a user do with the token today?
  • Need for the token: Is the token necessary to the stated product, or is its role unclear or mostly promotional?
  • Holder rights: What, if anything, does holding the token entitle someone to? Do not assume a token gives ownership, revenue, voting rights, or a claim on a project unless the documentation clearly says so and the claim can be corroborated.
  • Supply: How many tokens exist, how can more be created, and can tokens be burned? Check whether the stated supply matches information available on-chain.
  • Allocation and unlocks: Who received tokens, what portion is held by the team, investors, or treasury, and when can locked or vested tokens enter circulation?
  • Dependencies: Does the project rely on a company, a particular platform, outside services, or future development? Consider what happens if those dependencies fail or the promised product is delayed.

Look for independent corroboration of named founders, organizations, partnerships, product milestones, and other important claims. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) warns that celebrity endorsements alone are not a sound basis for an investment decision and describes risks including impersonation, bogus offerings, and unclear ownership. A polished website, large social following, celebrity mention, or exchange listing is not proof that a project’s claims are true.

How do you assess the contract and its control powers?

On the relevant network’s blockchain explorer, check whether the contract’s source code is published and what verification status is shown. Ethereum.org explains that source verification compares published source and compilation settings with deployed bytecode. This helps show whether the published code corresponds to the deployed contract; it is not the same as proving that the code is correct or safe. Ethereum.org also notes that partial verification may not compare the metadata hash, so it does not establish an exact source match.

Find out what privileged accounts can do

For the specific contract, investigate whether an owner, administrator, or other privileged address can:

  • Mint additional tokens or change supply-related settings.
  • Pause transfers, blacklist addresses, or restrict who can trade.
  • Change transaction fees or other trading rules.
  • Upgrade the contract or replace its implementation code.
  • Change other settings that could affect transfers, ownership, or access.

These powers vary by contract; do not assume that one token’s controls apply to another. Ethereum.org cautions that access controls can create centralization and single points of failure, and that deployed code usually cannot simply be patched after a flaw is found. If a contract uses a proxy or another upgradeable design, identify who can change the implementation and what process governs that change. If you cannot determine who has these powers or how they work, record that as an unresolved risk.

Read audit claims narrowly

An audit claim is useful only if you can inspect the report and determine what it covered. Check the contract addresses and versions reviewed, the date, the findings that remained unresolved, and whether the deployed code corresponds to the reviewed version. An audit does not guarantee that a contract is safe or that a project is trustworthy.

How do you evaluate distribution, liquidity, and trading?

Use the relevant chain explorer and token information pages to examine holders, transfers, transactions, trading pools, and available market metrics. For example, Uniswap documents token graph views and metrics such as pool total value locked, market capitalization, fully diluted valuation, volume, transactions, and pools. Its interface may also show warnings about potentially malicious activity or concentrated ownership. These indicators are not proof of wrongdoing or a prediction of future performance; they apply to the interface and supported networks, and the absence of a warning is not a safety finding.

Measure What it can tell you What it does not establish
Holder concentration Whether a small number of addresses control a large share of the visible token supply. It does not show by itself who controls every address or whether holders will sell. A few large holders could sell and rapidly affect the price.
Pool liquidity How much liquidity is available in a particular trading pool at the time you check. A displayed pool balance does not guarantee you can sell at the quoted price, especially for a large trade.
Trading volume Reported trading activity over a stated period and on the venues included in the metric. Volume alone does not prove that activity is sustainable, broadly distributed, or easy to exit.
Market capitalization A current market-price measure applied to the circulating supply used by the source. It is not the same as the value of all tokens that may eventually circulate, nor does it measure available exit liquidity.
Fully diluted valuation (FDV) A valuation measure based on the market price and a larger or total supply measure used by the source. It does not show that future tokens will retain the current price or that there is enough liquidity to sell them.

Compare market capitalization with FDV and examine the project’s unlock schedule: a substantial gap or upcoming unlocks may make future supply especially relevant. There is no universal “safe” threshold for holder concentration or liquidity in the cited guidance. Consider whether the available pool depth could support a sale of the size you might contemplate, whether trading is spread across credible venues, and whether apparent activity is concentrated in a few wallets or a short period. Market observations can change quickly, so note the source and time when comparing tokens.

How can you look for contrary evidence and pressure tactics?

Search independently for the token name, contract address, issuer, founders, and promoters alongside terms such as “review,” “scam,” “complaint,” “lawsuit,” or “hack.” Give more weight to regulator notices, court records, named audit reports, project disclosures, and on-chain records than to anonymous testimonials. Investigate claims and warnings rather than treating a search result as a verdict.

Keep a close eye on the market. Compare service providers. Track performance. Get timely alerts. Build your portfolio with confidence.

Be especially cautious if someone promises guaranteed or unusually high returns, creates urgency, impersonates a known person or organization, or contacts you privately to direct an investment. The SEC describes online relationship approaches, impersonation, fraudulent offerings, and difficulties recovering crypto-related losses. The FTC says guaranteed-profit claims are not credible and recommends checking claims independently. Requests to pay an extra fee to release supposed proceeds are a serious warning sign; do not send more money simply because someone says it will unlock a withdrawal.

What should you write down before deciding?

Make a short record that separates what you verified from what the project claims and what remains unknown. For a comparison between two tokens, use the same sources and observation time where possible.

  • The token’s purpose and any clearly documented holder rights.
  • The network, contract address, supply, allocations, and future unlocks.
  • What you confirmed directly about source verification, upgradeability, and privileged controls.
  • Holder concentration, pool depth, volume, trading venues, and any limits on a realistic exit.
  • Independent warnings or contrary evidence, along with unresolved questions.
  • Which statements are issuer claims rather than independently verified facts.

If an important claim cannot be verified, write that down rather than filling the gap with an assumption. SEC investor education materials describe crypto asset securities as exceptionally risky and volatile and warn that they may be illiquid, become untradable, or lack protections an investor expects from other financial accounts. Those materials do not determine whether a particular token is a security or what protections apply; that depends on the facts and jurisdiction.

What wallet and custody risks remain after the research?

Researching a token does not remove the risks of holding or trading it. The SEC custody bulletin explains that a wallet holds private keys, not the assets themselves. If you use a custodian, research its practices and fees; protect your seed phrase, use strong account security, and understand how access could be lost. Consider whether a total loss is affordable and consistent with your own plan and risk tolerance. The SEC’s 2023 investor guidance says that money put at risk in a speculative investment should be money an investor can afford to lose entirely.
