To let an iOS custom keyboard use the network, add the Boolean RequestsOpenAccess key to the keyboard extension’s Info.plist, then have the user enable Allow Full Access for that keyboard in Settings. At runtime, check hasFullAccess before making network requests: the plist entry requests the capability but does not grant it. Keep basic text entry usable when access is off or the device is offline, and send keystrokes only for a disclosed text-input feature, securely and for no longer than needed.
What Full Access enables—and what it does not
A custom keyboard runs in an isolated extension process. By default, it cannot access the network and cannot write to the containing app’s shared group container, although it can read from that container. Requesting open access can enable network activity and shared-container writes, among other capabilities. Apple describes these capabilities in its custom keyboard documentation.
There are two separate decisions: the extension declares that it requests open access, and the user chooses whether to allow it. A declaration in Info.plist is not proof of permission at runtime. Apple explains the configuration and user choice in its open access guide.
Request open access in the keyboard extension
- Open the keyboard extension target’s
Info.plist. Make this change in the extension’s configuration, not just the containing app’s plist. - Under
NSExtension→NSExtensionAttributes, addRequestsOpenAccess. Set its type to Boolean and its value totrue. Apple documents this key in theRequestsOpenAccessreference. - Tell users why the keyboard needs the capability. Explain the specific network feature, such as an input feature that sends text for processing, before asking them to enable the setting.
- Have the user enable it in Settings. In iOS Settings, open the keyboard settings, select the installed keyboard, and turn on Allow Full Access. The exact navigation labels can vary by iOS version; Apple’s configuration guide describes the user-facing switch.
- Check permission before network-dependent work. In the keyboard’s
UIInputViewController, checkhasFullAccessat the point the feature needs open access. If it is false, do not attempt the network-dependent feature; keep the available local keyboard behavior working.
Make network features optional
Design ordinary input to work without network access. Apple’s archived custom-keyboard programming guide says keyboards must be capable of operating independently of network access. Treat connectivity as an enhancement, not a prerequisite for typing.

When Full Access is unavailable or the connection fails, provide a useful reduced mode: for example, continue local text entry while disabling only the feature that genuinely requires a server. Avoid blocking the keyboard or implying that enabling Full Access guarantees connectivity.
Send keystrokes securely and limit their use
Apple’s guidance for developers who send keystrokes to a server is direct: “Transmit data securely, and use only for the purpose of text input.” Its open access documentation also says not to store received keystroke or voice data beyond the time needed to return text or provide a feature explained to the user. Apple gives examples such as server-side touch-event processing and input prediction.

- CABLE LENGTH — 1 meter (3 feet).
- Explain the feature and its data flow. Identify what keyboard feature sends data and what the service does with it; a generic privacy statement alone does not explain that interaction.
- Minimize what leaves the device. Send only the information needed for the described text-input feature.
- Protect data in transit. Apple requires secure transmission but the cited keyboard-extension guidance does not specify a transport protocol, TLS version, server architecture, or certificate-pinning scheme. Do not present one as a keyboard-specific Apple requirement on the basis of that guidance.
- Keep data only as long as the feature needs it. Remove received keystroke or voice data when it is no longer needed to return text or provide the feature explained to the user.
Know where the custom keyboard cannot appear
Apple’s Virtual keyboards Human Interface Guidelines say custom keyboards are unavailable in secure text fields and phone-number fields. Apple’s archived guide likewise explains that the system temporarily replaces a custom keyboard for secure text input. Do not promise that the extension can capture or process text entered in those fields.
