Google’s Indexing API is not a general-purpose way to submit any webpage. Google documents it only for pages containing JobPosting markup or BroadcastEvent embedded in a VideoObject. To request access, enable the API in a Google Cloud project, create a service account, verify ownership of the relevant Search Console property, authenticate with OAuth 2.0 using the https://www.googleapis.com/auth/indexing scope, and submit Google’s quota-and-approval form with honest project and URL details. Approval and higher quotas are discretionary, and a successful notification never guarantees that Google will crawl or index a page.
What the Google Indexing API is—and what it is not
The Indexing API lets an authorized application notify Google that an eligible URL has been updated or removed. Google can then decide whether to recrawl the URL or process the removal. The API is a notification channel, not an indexing command and not a substitute for normal crawling, sitemap submission, internal linking, or technical SEO.
Google’s documented eligibility is deliberately narrow:

A page that is an ordinary article, product page, company page, documentation page, or blog post is not listed as an eligible use case. A video page is not automatically eligible either; it must contain the qualifying BroadcastEvent markup inside a VideoObject. Before you spend time on authentication or quota forms, classify every URL you intend to send.

Prepare your URLs before requesting access
Confirm that every URL has a qualifying purpose
Make a list of the exact canonical URLs your application will notify. For each one, record whether it is a genuine job posting or a qualifying livestream/event page. Do not describe a general content library as an eligible use case simply because some pages contain video or employment-related words.
For job pages, confirm that the page is a real, available position and that its structured data describes the same job a visitor sees. For livestream pages, confirm that the event is represented with BroadcastEvent embedded in a VideoObject. If a URL does not fit either category, leave it out of the Indexing API workflow and use Google’s normal discovery methods instead.

- Googlebot must be able to fetch the URL.
- Do not block the page with
robots.txt. - Do not add a
noindexdirective to a URL you want indexed. - Do not require a login or private session for Googlebot to view the page.
- Ensure the canonical URL, visible content, and structured data agree.
- For
JobPostingpages, validate the markup with Google’s Rich Results Test before release.
These checks affect more than the outcome of a single notification. Google’s approval and continued access are tied to the quality and legitimacy of the documents and URLs you submit.
Set up the Google Cloud and Search Console prerequisites
1. Choose or create the Cloud project
Use one Google Cloud project as the owner of the integration and write down its project ID. The project is the unit Google uses for the quotas listed later. If you operate separate sites or environments, decide whether they genuinely require separate projects; creating multiple accounts or projects to evade limits is not an acceptable strategy.
2. Enable the Indexing API
In Google Cloud Console, open the project’s API library, locate the Indexing API, and enable it. Console labels can change, so verify that the enabled service is the Google Indexing API rather than a similarly named service. Keep a record of the project in which you enabled it, because the approval form must refer to the same project that will send requests.

3. Create a service account
Create a service account for the application that will send notifications. Treat its credentials as production secrets: store them in a secret manager or protected server configuration, restrict who can access them, and never place a private key in client-side JavaScript, a public repository, or a URL.
The service account is an identity, not proof that every URL is eligible. You still need Search Console ownership for the property and must use the identity in an OAuth 2.0 flow.
4. Verify ownership in Search Console
Verify ownership of the Search Console property that contains the URLs you will submit. Make the property scope match your URL set—for example, do not verify one host and then send URLs from an unrelated host. Keep the verification method active and document which property and Cloud project are connected to the integration.
5. Obtain an OAuth 2.0 access token
Every Indexing API request must carry an OAuth 2.0 access token with the exact read/write scope https://www.googleapis.com/auth/indexing. Your server-side authentication code should obtain and refresh tokens using the service account credentials, then send the current token in an HTTP authorization header. A token for another Google API, an API key by itself, or an omitted header does not satisfy this requirement.
Request approval and additional quota
Start with the default onboarding allowance
Google’s current quota documentation lists an initial allowance of 200 publish requests per project per day. This is a starting quota, not a promise that you will be approved for unrestricted production use. Build a small, legitimate implementation around eligible URLs first so you can describe real usage rather than a speculative bulk-submission plan.

- The Google Cloud project ID that enabled the API.
- The service or site that owns the URLs.
- The Search Console property you verified.
- The content type you will submit:
JobPostingor qualifyingBroadcastEventin aVideoObject. - Representative URL examples that are genuinely eligible and crawlable.
- Your expected update and deletion volume, including why that volume is necessary.
- How you will validate structured data, authenticate requests, respect quotas, and handle removals.
Google states that quota may increase or decrease based on document quality. Write the form as an operational description, not as a request to index an entire site. Do not claim eligibility for ordinary pages, and do not inflate the projected volume.
Understand what Google does not promise
Google’s documentation explains the form and eligibility rules but does not publish a guaranteed approval probability or an approval turnaround time. Plan your launch so that the site remains functional if approval takes time or a requested increase is declined. Keep normal XML sitemaps, internal links, and crawlable navigation in place.

The following figures come from Google’s official quota documentation as retrieved in 2026. They are per Google Cloud project unless stated otherwise.

Quota is counted per URL in a batch. A batch can contain up to 100 individual requests, but putting 100 URLs into one HTTP operation does not turn them into one quota unit. Design your queue and retry logic around URL-level accounting.

Submit a removal
Use URL_DELETED only after the URL actually meets Google’s removal conditions. Google’s documentation says the URL must return HTTP 404 or 410, or contain a noindex meta tag, before you submit the deletion notification. If the page still returns its normal content, a deletion notification does not make that content disappear from search.
Interpret the response correctly
An HTTP 200 response means Google accepted the notification. It means the request passed the API’s acceptance step and Google may try to recrawl or remove the URL. It does not confirm that Googlebot fetched the page, that the structured data passed, that the page entered the index, or that a search result will appear.
Record the request time, URL, notification type, project, response code, and retry history. Use Google’s metadata endpoint to monitor notification status, while treating that status as confirmation of notification receipt rather than proof of indexing.
Build a compliant implementation
Use event-driven notifications
Connect notifications to the events that matter: a qualifying job is published or materially changed, a livestream event is updated, or an eligible page is removed. A queue prevents a traffic spike from exhausting the daily allowance and gives you a place to apply deduplication before sending.
Deduplicate and prioritize
- Coalesce repeated edits to the same URL into one pending
URL_UPDATEDnotification. - Prioritize currently live jobs and events over stale records.
- Reserve capacity for deletions so expired pages can be handled promptly.
- Track daily and per-minute usage by Cloud project.
- Retry only transient failures, with backoff that respects the quota window.
Keep an audit trail
For each notification, retain the source event, URL, type, token-generation result, HTTP response, and final metadata check. This lets you explain your usage in a quota review and identify whether a problem came from authentication, eligibility, crawlability, or rate limiting.
Approval and access pitfalls
Applying for ordinary URLs
The most fundamental mistake is requesting access to accelerate indexing for a normal article or other general webpage. Google’s published eligibility statement does not include those pages. Reframe the workflow around eligible job or qualifying event URLs, and use ordinary discovery mechanisms for everything else.

Confusing a successful request with indexing
A successful API response is not an indexing guarantee. Google still evaluates crawl access, page quality, structured-data validity, duplication, spam signals, and its own indexing systems. Avoid promising stakeholders that a 200 response means a page will rank or appear immediately.
Sending blocked or private pages
If robots.txt blocks Googlebot, a login is required, or a noindex directive is present, the API cannot turn the page into a crawlable document. Fix the page’s access controls before sending another notification.
Using the wrong authentication scope
Every request needs OAuth 2.0 and the exact https://www.googleapis.com/auth/indexing scope. Check the token’s scopes and expiration when requests fail authentication. Do not substitute an API key or a token issued only for unrelated Google services.

Trying to bypass limits
Google says all submissions undergo rigorous spam detection and warns that attempts to bypass limits, including the use of multiple accounts, can lead to access being revoked. A second account, project, or service identity is not a legitimate quota strategy. Request the volume you can justify and implement throttling.
Assuming a quota increase is permanent
Google may increase or decrease quota based on document quality. Treat any granted amount as conditional. Continue validating URLs, maintaining ownership, and following structured-data and spam policies after approval.

Direct integration versus an outside connector
Google’s official workflow supports a direct integration. An external connector or consultant can be useful operationally, but it does not remove your responsibility for eligibility, ownership, authentication, or policy compliance.

A practical pre-submission checklist
- Classify every URL as a genuine
JobPostingpage or a qualifyingBroadcastEventin aVideoObject. - Confirm Googlebot access: no blocking robots.txt rule, login wall, or unintended
noindex. - Validate job structured data with Google’s Rich Results Test before publishing.
- Record the canonical URL and verify it belongs to the Search Console property you control.
- Choose the Google Cloud project, enable the Indexing API, and record the project ID.
- Create and secure the service account used by the application.
- Obtain OAuth 2.0 tokens with
https://www.googleapis.com/auth/indexing. - Design queueing, deduplication, quota tracking, retries, and audit logging.
- Complete Google’s quota-and-approval form with truthful URLs and volume estimates.
- Start within the 200-publish-request daily allowance and request more only when your documented need and page quality justify it.
The correct expectation after approval
Approval gives your application permission to submit notifications under Google’s terms; it does not guarantee approval for every future URL, a specific crawl time, or inclusion in search results. Continue to publish accessible pages, maintain valid structured data, monitor notification responses, and use normal Google discovery mechanisms alongside the API. The safest implementation is narrow, transparent, quota-aware, and limited to the two content types Google documents.
