If you bought the game directly from Microsoft or Xbox, open Microsoft’s Xbox digital-game refund page, sign in with the purchasing Microsoft account, select the transaction, choose Request a refund, explain the reason, select Next, check the details and select Submit. Microsoft says it can take up to 72 hours to process the request; after an approved refund is issued, the credit normally reaches the original payment method within 3–5 business days.
The result depends on where you bought the game, whether digital delivery has started, whether it is a standalone item or part of a bundle, and whether you are relying on ordinary cancellation or a defect/non-conformity remedy. A 14-day period is not an automatic Xbox-game return guarantee in Italy: Microsoft’s terms say digital-content cancellation can end when downloading begins, unless applicable law or the offer provides otherwise.
First, identify who took your payment
Use Microsoft’s online process only when the purchase appears in the Microsoft account that paid for it. Check the order confirmation, bank or card statement and the account’s order history before starting. A console can be used by several accounts, so being signed in on the Xbox is not enough; the refund request must be made from the account associated with the transaction.

Games, downloadable add-ons and other digital items bought through Microsoft Store or Xbox are handled through Microsoft’s refund system. The transaction should appear after you sign in to the official support page. If the order is absent, try the account used at checkout rather than creating a new request under a different account.

Another retailer or marketplace
If a retailer, console marketplace, mobile store or other seller processed the payment, Microsoft does not accept the return for that transaction. Contact the seller shown on your receipt. Microsoft cannot reverse a payment it did not collect, even when the game is played on an Xbox console.
What Microsoft says about digital-game eligibility
Microsoft’s support guidance states: “Digital goods like apps, games, add-on content, subscriptions, movies, TV shows, and books aren’t refundable unless the offer or applicable law states that you’re eligible for a refund.” That means submitting the form starts a review; it does not promise approval.
The review can consider the purchase source, the item type, delivery or download status, the reason supplied and any rights created by the law that applies to your transaction. Microsoft does not publish a guaranteed Italy-specific play-time threshold in the official material used for this guide. Community claims such as a fixed number of hours or days should not be presented as Microsoft policy.

Microsoft’s current Services Agreement says: “You will be entitled to a cancellation period (a ‘Cooling-Off Period’) of fourteen (14) days from the day of purchase, with or without cause.” The same agreement qualifies digital content: “When you purchase digital content from us, you will cease to have the right to cancel from the moment when you begin the download.” The agreement was accessed on 19 October 2026 and does not turn every downloaded Xbox game into an unconditional 14-day return.
In practical terms, do not assume that an Italian or EU customer can always cancel a digital game for any reason during 14 days. The right can depend on whether the offer and checkout clearly obtained consent to immediate digital supply and acknowledgement that the withdrawal right would be lost. Microsoft’s Services Agreement and the Xbox Game Studios Shop EU/UK return policy describe that distinction. A defect, damage, misleading description or other non-conformity is a separate issue from changing your mind after downloading.

Check these factors before submitting
These questions help you choose the correct path and explain the request accurately:
- Seller: Was the charge made by Microsoft/Xbox or by another retailer?
- Product: Is it a complete game, add-on, subscription, film, book or another digital good?
- Delivery: Has the game been downloaded, activated, installed or otherwise consumed?
- Timing: Are you within a cooling-off period that actually applies to this digital transaction?
- Structure: Is the game a standalone purchase or one component of a bundle?
- Reason: Are you asking because of an accidental purchase, ordinary dissatisfaction, a duplicate charge, or a defect/non-conformity?
Answering these points consistently with your receipt and account history avoids a request being routed to the wrong seller or based on a right that may have ended when digital delivery began.

- Open the official page. Go to Get a refund for apps and games purchased from Microsoft Store. The page may display a locale-specific version or redirect while retaining Microsoft’s support domain.
- Sign in. Use the Microsoft account that bought the game. If two accounts are used on the console, sign out and retry with the account shown on the order confirmation.
- Select the transaction. Find the relevant game or order in the list. Compare the title, date and amount with your receipt so you do not select a different edition or add-on.
- Choose Request a refund. This option appears only where Microsoft’s online return flow is available for that transaction and market.
- Give the reason. Select the closest reason or write a concise explanation. State the material fact—such as an accidental purchase, duplicate transaction or a reproducible defect—without claiming a legal entitlement you cannot establish.
- Select Next. Review the item, account and explanation shown on the form. Correct an incorrect selection before continuing.
- Submit. Send the completed request and keep the confirmation screen or message. It is useful if you later need to identify the request to support.
Processing and payment timing
Microsoft says a refund request may take up to 72 hours to process. Check the refund-status area associated with your account and watch for Microsoft follow-up messages during that period. A submitted request is not the same as an issued refund; wait for the decision or an explicit issuance notice.
When Microsoft approves and issues the refund, it generally sends the money to the original payment method. Microsoft gives an expected posting time of 3–5 business days after issuance. The bank, card issuer or payment provider controls the final posting date, so weekends, local holidays and its own statement cycle can affect when the credit becomes visible. The 3–5-day estimate starts after issuance, not when you first open the request.

If the “Request a refund” option is missing
Microsoft states that online returns are not available in every market. A missing button therefore does not prove that your claim is rejected, and it does not create an automatic approval. First confirm that you are signed in to the paying account and that the order is a Microsoft transaction. If both checks pass, contact Microsoft Sales/Support and provide the order number, purchase date, game title, amount, payment method and a short explanation.

Do not open a request against an unrelated transaction just to make the button appear. That can delay identification of the correct order. If support asks for proof, provide the original receipt or account record and redact unrelated financial details before uploading anything.
Bundles, add-ons and subscriptions
Bundles
The stated online process does not allow a single item inside a bundle to be returned. Treat the bundle as the purchased unit when you describe the order. If the form does not offer the required option, use Microsoft Sales/Support and ask how that specific bundle is handled; do not represent one component as a separate purchase.
Add-on content
Add-ons are digital goods covered by Microsoft’s general statement that they are not refundable unless the offer or applicable law makes you eligible. Identify the base game and the add-on separately in your explanation, because an add-on may have its own order line, download status and non-conformity symptoms.
Subscriptions
Subscriptions appear in the same broad digital-goods guidance, but a subscription charge is not the same transaction as a game purchase. Select the exact subscription order if it appears in the refund list and follow the terms shown for that order.
Accidental purchases and ordinary dissatisfaction
If you bought the wrong edition, selected the wrong title or completed checkout unintentionally, say so plainly in the reason field. Include the order date and identify whether downloading started. Microsoft will assess the request under its policy and any applicable legal or offer-based rights; the form itself does not guarantee that an accidental purchase will be reversed.

Disliking a game after trying it is also not an automatic ground for a refund under Microsoft’s published wording. Avoid relying on an alleged fixed play-time rule: no guaranteed Italy-specific threshold is stated in the official sources for this guide. A truthful explanation is more useful than an unsupported number.
Defective or non-conforming digital content
A game that crashes, fails to deliver advertised functionality, is materially different from its description or is otherwise non-conforming raises a different question from a simple change of mind. Record the title and edition, the order number, the device or platform, the error text, when the problem began and the troubleshooting already attempted. Attach only the evidence requested by Microsoft.
The EU/UK policy for the Xbox Game Studios Shop distinguishes the loss of withdrawal rights after immediate digital supply from statutory rights for defective or non-conforming content. That distinction matters in Italy: the end of an ordinary cooling-off cancellation right does not by itself answer a claim that the digital content was defective. State the fault specifically and ask support to assess the applicable remedy rather than describing a defect as mere dissatisfaction.
What to keep for your records
- The Microsoft account email or account identifier used at checkout.
- The order number, title, edition, add-ons and purchase date.
- The amount and currency shown on the receipt.
- The payment method, without sharing full card or bank credentials.
- Whether downloading, installing, activating or streaming began.
- Your submitted explanation and the confirmation or case number.
- For a defect: screenshots, error messages, video or reproduction steps, if requested.
Keep these details together until the request is decided and the credit appears. If the charge came from another seller, retain that seller’s receipt instead; Microsoft support cannot substitute for the merchant that processed the payment.
Troubleshooting the process
The order is not listed
Sign out and try every Microsoft account used by the household, then compare the account’s order history with the receipt. Check whether the transaction was made through a different retailer. If the purchase was made by another seller, stop using Microsoft’s form and contact that seller.

The page loops back to sign-in
Complete sign-in in the same browser session, then reopen the official support link. If the account is managed by a family group, make sure you are using the account that actually paid, not only the account that played the game.
The form rejects a bundle or another item
Do not split the bundle into invented transactions. Contact Microsoft Sales/Support with the complete order details and explain which component is affected.
No decision after 72 hours
Microsoft’s stated processing window is up to 72 hours. Once that period has passed without a decision or status update, contact Microsoft support with the existing request information rather than filing duplicate requests. If Microsoft marks the refund as issued but the credit is absent after the stated 3–5 business-day posting estimate, ask the payment provider to trace the original transaction and provide Microsoft’s issuance reference if available.

How to describe the request clearly
A useful explanation is short, factual and tied to the selected order. For example: “I purchased the Italian edition by mistake; the order number is [shown in the account], and the download has not started.” If the issue is technical, identify the reproducible failure instead: “The game closes at launch on my console; error code and steps are attached.” Replace the bracketed description with the actual order information in the form; do not paste sensitive payment credentials.
Do not claim that Italian law guarantees a refund simply because 14 days have not elapsed. Explain whether immediate digital supply began and let Microsoft or its support team assess the legal basis. This keeps an ordinary cancellation request separate from a non-conformity complaint.
Official wording and reference pages
Microsoft’s current support page contains the digital-goods eligibility statement and the 72-hour processing and 3–5-business-day payment estimates: Get a refund for apps and games purchased from Microsoft Store. The page’s publication date is not stated.
The current Microsoft Services Agreement contains the 14-day cooling-off wording and the qualification that cancellation for digital content ends when downloading begins, unless applicable law or the offer says otherwise. The agreement was accessed on 19 October 2026.
