Choose a passage from the transcript or timeline; if YouTube’s AI suggestions are available, use them to find candidates, then review and adjust the footage before creating a draft. AI can help you navigate the transcript, but it does not guarantee that a clip will perform well.
Choose a source video and a clip goal
Start with a video uploaded to your own channel. Before editing, decide whether you want a vertical Short, a standard video clip, or a teaser that gives viewers a reason to watch the full video. The best excerpt is usually a complete moment—one idea, demonstration, reaction, or story beat—with a clear beginning and payoff, rather than an arbitrary slice of the timeline.
YouTube recommends looking for hooks, exciting or informative segments, actionable tutorial steps, and visually appealing moments. Its creator guidance says, “Shorts can be a great way to preview your longer videos.” YouTube’s guidance on adapting long-form videos to Shorts also recommends making clips concise and understandable on their own.
Make a Short or clip in YouTube Studio
- Open the uploaded video. Sign in to YouTube Studio, go to your content, and open the video you want to repurpose.
- Choose Clips and Shorts. Use the option on the video’s editing or details page to start creating a Short or video clip.
- Select the passage. Highlight relevant transcript text or set the start and end points on the timeline. If AI suggestions and an outline of the transcript are available, use them to shortlist moments, not as a substitute for checking the actual footage.
- Refine the selection. Make sure the excerpt contains enough context to make sense without the full video. Adjust the boundaries so it starts promptly and reaches a satisfying payoff.
- Adapt the frame and pacing. For a Short, use a 9:16 vertical crop where it suits the footage. Keep the subject visible, remove dead time, and use text or captions to make the main point easy to follow.
- Review captions. Studio can generate captions from the transcript when available. Check names, technical terms, punctuation, timing, and placement; adjust the styling or position, or turn captions off if they do not help.
- Create a draft and finish the upload. Preview the clip, write a clear title, and add a call to action appropriate to the clip. YouTube’s Studio instructions recommend linking the source video in the description. Shorts made through this tool are automatically associated with their source video except when the Short is private, unlisted, or Made for Kids.
- Review and iterate. Check YouTube Analytics for performance and engagement, then test different moments or formats. Repurposing does not guarantee reach or traffic.

When YouTube’s AI suggestions are available
YouTube’s Studio tool can offer AI-powered suggestions and an AI-generated transcript outline to help navigate a video and locate possible excerpts. The documented availability is limited to Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Mexico, South Korea, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States, with English, French, German, Hindi, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish listed as supported languages. Availability can change. If you do not see AI suggestions, transcript and timeline selection are the documented alternatives.
Treat suggestions as a first pass. The official documentation describes a way to find and edit candidate moments; it does not promise the AI will identify the most compelling or best-performing clip. Watch the selected footage, check that the context is fair, and adjust the boundaries yourself.

Make a Short on mobile from your own upload
In the YouTube mobile app, open your eligible public long-form video and choose Remix → Edit into a Short. The documented flow lets you select up to 60 seconds, add text or filters, and upload. Edit on a phone with YouTube Create
YouTube for Artists describes YouTube Create as a free mobile editor for making Shorts and videos and uploading directly to YouTube. Its listed tools include audio cleanup, beat detection, cut out, effects, filters, transitions, and voiceover. Consider a third-party AI clipping service only if needed
If the native tools do not fit your workflow, compare services on practical criteria: supported inputs, transcript accuracy, vertical reframing, caption editing, export options, privacy terms, and cost. Product features, pricing, and availability vary, so check them directly before choosing. YouTube’s native workflow already offers transcript-based selection and, where available, AI suggestions; a separate service is not necessary for every creator.
Rights and eligibility: your upload versus someone else’s video
Editing a video on your channel is different from remixing another creator’s work. Whether another video can be remixed depends on its availability, creator settings, copyright ownership, and applicable music licenses. YouTube notes that protected material used in Shorts created outside YouTube’s creation tools may receive a Content ID claim or be removed after a valid copyright takedown. Review YouTube’s guidance on creating Shorts with remixed content and use only material you have permission to use.

Before publishing
- Check that the excerpt preserves the speaker’s meaning and does not remove context that changes it.
- Confirm that the music, footage, and other included material are cleared for the way you are using them.
- Check the Short’s visibility and audience settings, especially if you expect it to link back to its source video.
- Correct caption errors that could change names, instructions, or claims.
Troubleshooting common issues
“Clips and Shorts” or AI suggestions do not appear
Confirm that you opened an uploaded video in your own channel’s Studio. AI features have country and language availability limits; if suggestions or the outline are missing, select the passage manually from transcript text or the timeline.
The mobile “Edit into a Short” option is unavailable
Check that the source is your own public long-form upload. Private and unlisted videos, and videos with third-party copyright claims, are ineligible for that documented mobile route. Use the Studio workflow when appropriate, or resolve the eligibility issue before trying again.

The clip feels confusing without the original video
Choose a more self-contained passage or retain a short setup before the key moment. Add concise on-screen context if needed, and point viewers to the full video in the description.
Captions contain mistakes or cover the subject
Correct transcription errors in the available caption controls and reposition or restyle captions so they do not obscure faces, demonstrations, or essential text. If reliable captions are not possible for that clip, turn them off rather than leaving misleading text.
A Short does not link to the source video
Check whether the Short is private, unlisted, or Made for Kids; those are documented exceptions to automatic source association in the Studio workflow. Add the source link in the description as YouTube’s Studio instructions recommend.
