Report the specific Xbox item or in-game user-created asset that causes the problem—such as a message, gamertag, image, video, voice activity, listing or scam—not the game in general. Open that item’s Report control (or the game’s own UGC report control), choose the category describing the harm, explain what is misleading or abusive, and attach limited evidence such as the game, creator, approximate UTC time and a contextual screenshot or clip.
“AI-generated” is not a universal Xbox report category in the cited policies. Describe the actual violation—impersonation, fraud, harassment, sexual or violent material, privacy abuse, spam, misleading advertising or another Community Standards problem—and mention AI provenance only as supporting context.
What you can report—and what “AI content” means
Xbox’s published rules focus on the conduct and harm caused by content, not on whether a person used an AI tool to make it. A synthetic image that is merely unattractive, a procedurally generated texture, or a low-quality character voice is not automatically a safety violation. A generated image used to impersonate another player, trick people into sending money, expose private information, spread hateful abuse or depict prohibited sexual or violent material is a different matter.
Xbox Community Standards, last updated in May 2024, encourage players to “mute, block, report the player(s) acting inappropriately, and file a complaint” when they experience or witness inappropriate content or behavior. Your report is strongest when it identifies the exact item and the rule-relevant harm.

Examples of reportable harm
- Impersonation: an account, avatar, voice message or listing presents itself as another player, a game developer or a Microsoft/Xbox representative.
- Fraud and scams: a generated offer, giveaway, trade, code or payment request is designed to steal money, credentials or an account.
- Misleading advertising: an image or description falsely promises an item, reward, feature or affiliation.
- Harassment, hate or threats: generated text, audio, images or videos target a person or protected group.
- Sexual or violent abuse: synthetic or edited material depicts prohibited sexual content, exploitation or graphic violence.
- Privacy violations: content exposes personal information or uses someone’s likeness or voice without permission in a harmful way.
- Spam and manipulation: automated messages, listings or repeated uploads flood a game or try to manipulate players.
If the only problem is quality, repetition or an unwanted style with no standards violation, send ordinary feedback to the game developer instead of labeling it a safety report.
Choose the reporting route that owns the item
Use the control closest to the content. A platform report is appropriate for Xbox account activity and platform-hosted items; the game’s own workflow is generally the right owner for player-created assets inside a game.

Do not submit a vague complaint about an entire game when one asset or account is the problem. Xbox warns that it reviews the item selected in a report; for example, reporting a gamertag initiates a gamertag review. Select the message, image, video, voice activity or listing itself whenever the interface allows it.

1. Preserve the exact context before it disappears
Note the game and mode, creator or gamertag, the asset’s name or identifier, and the approximate date and time in UTC. Record where you saw it—such as a lobby, marketplace, shared world, profile or direct message. If the item has a share URL or an in-game ID, copy it exactly. Capture a screenshot or short clip that shows enough surrounding context to establish who posted it and what it claims.
Do not download, edit, or redistribute harmful material merely to document it. If the content includes personal data, capture the minimum needed and crop unrelated names, addresses, codes or conversations.

2. Open the report control for that item
Use the on-screen Report, Report player or equivalent control attached to the selected item. Labels and placement vary by Xbox surface, game and software version. In a game, open the asset’s details or contextual menu and use its UGC report option when present. If you cannot find a control, check the game’s help or support menu for its published reporting route rather than reporting an unrelated profile.
3. Select the category that describes the violation
Choose the closest available category—such as impersonation, fraud or scam, harassment, hateful conduct, sexual content, violent content, privacy, spam or another prohibited behavior. The category tells reviewers what to examine. Do not choose a generic option simply because an AI model produced the material.
4. Explain the harm in plain, factual language
State what the item says or shows, who created it, where it appeared and why it violates the applicable rule. If you know that an AI generator or synthetic voice was used, identify that as context (“the creator labels this as AI-generated” or “the image appears synthetically altered”), but connect it to the concrete deception or harm. Explain the requested action without exaggeration—for example, that a listing impersonates a developer and asks players for payment, or that a voice message uses another player’s likeness to solicit account credentials.
5. Add concise, non-sensitive evidence
Attach the contextual screenshot or clip, asset ID, creator name, game mode and approximate UTC time if the interface permits attachments. Keep the evidence in its original form, avoid public reposting, and redact information that reviewers do not need. A short description of what is visible in each attachment helps reviewers locate the relevant frame or message.
6. Submit once, then limit further contact
Submit the report through the selected item’s workflow. Repeated duplicate reports do not add context and can make a case harder to interpret. Use mute and block on the account if contact is continuing, and leave the harmful asset unshared. If there is an immediate threat to personal safety or a crime, preserve the evidence and contact appropriate local emergency or law-enforcement services; an Xbox report is not an emergency response channel.

7. Review any enforcement or case-review notice
If Xbox takes action against an account or item, check the enforcement history and any linked case-review or appeal resource shown with that action. Public Xbox materials do not promise an appeal for every content report, and they do not specify a fixed response time for an individual report. Avoid opening new reports solely to ask for a status update unless the service directs you to do so.

For a generated map, skin, image, text, audio clip, video, marketplace listing or other asset made by players, start with the in-game UGC report control. Microsoft’s Game Development Kit requirement XR-018 says games that support UGC must provide an in-product report route and publish content guidelines. Those guidelines explain what creators may upload and give moderators a basis for action.
When a game uses an external mod service
XR-018 also says third-party mod integrations should use the report or complaint API when one is available. The game should show a disclaimer, dialog or visual indicator when content is not sourced from the developer. That signal helps you distinguish an official asset from a community upload and gives you the correct place to complain. Report the asset through the game first, and include the external item’s identifier if the game exposes one.
If the in-game report control is missing
Record the game version, platform, mode, creator and asset ID, then use the developer’s support channel to report the missing moderation path and the content itself. You can also use an Xbox platform report when the offending behavior is tied to an Xbox account or platform message. Explain that the item is player-created and that the expected UGC report control was unavailable; do not select an unrelated category just to force submission.
How to describe AI involvement without weakening your report
AI provenance can be uncertain. A creator may disclose that an image, voice or message is generated, while an observer may only see artifacts that look synthetic. Use qualified wording when you cannot verify the tool: “the creator labels this AI-generated,” “the account appears to use a cloned voice,” or “the image is presented as an official developer announcement but appears altered.” Do not make an unverified accusation about a person’s identity or intent.

Then describe the policy issue independently of the technology. A persuasive report answers four questions:
- What is the item? Identify the message, asset, listing, video, image, voice activity or account.
- What does it claim or do? Quote only the necessary words and describe the action requested from players.
- Who could be harmed and how? Explain deception, financial loss, harassment, privacy exposure, sexual or violent abuse, or another concrete risk.
- Where is the evidence? Give the creator, location, identifier and time, and point to the relevant part of each attachment.
“It was made by AI” alone does not establish a Community Standards violation. Conversely, you do not need to prove which model or tool produced an item when the harmful conduct is clear.

Xbox combines automated systems with human moderation. Its description of AI safety work says that its approach to categorizing and identifying harmful content is guided by Microsoft’s Responsible AI Standard, allowing human moderators to focus on complex and nuanced harms while aiming for accurate, consistent and fair enforcement.
The 2024 Xbox transparency report states that, globally, Xbox scanned 17.2 billion pieces of content from February 17 through December 31, 2024. It identified 2.4% as harmful or policy-violating. Xbox Automod handled 4.4 million reported pieces of content and enabled action on unwanted content 93% faster, according to that report. These are platform-wide figures for that reporting period, not a prediction that your individual case will receive a particular decision or response time.

- Auto Labeling classifies reported conversational text.
- Image Pattern Matching helps identify known harmful content and emerging toxic imagery.
- Human moderators review complex or nuanced cases and make or support enforcement decisions.
Automation can help surface patterns, but it does not remove the need to select the correct item and category. A report attached to the wrong gamertag, profile or asset may send reviewers to material that does not contain the problem you intended to report.

Common situations and the best route

Evidence, privacy and personal safety checklist
- Keep the original: Save the unedited screenshot or clip privately so its timestamp and context remain clear.
- Capture surroundings: Include the game name, mode, creator and the navigation context that shows where the item came from.
- Use UTC for time: Give an approximate UTC date and time, especially when players or moderators may be in different regions.
- Minimize sensitive data: Crop unrelated private messages, email addresses, payment details, redemption codes and children’s information.
- Do not engage: Avoid arguing with the creator, threatening retaliation or reposting abusive material to collect reactions.
- Protect your account: Never provide passwords, multifactor codes or payment details in response to a message, even when it appears to come from an official account.
- Use mute and block: These controls reduce contact while Xbox or the developer reviews the report.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Reporting the game instead of the item
A report about “AI everywhere in this game” gives reviewers no specific target. Open the message, listing, asset, player or account that contains the problem and submit that item.
Choosing “AI” as the entire explanation
Because the cited Xbox policies do not establish a universal AI-generated category, explain the deception, abuse, privacy issue, scam or other prohibited conduct. Add AI provenance as context only when it is disclosed or materially relevant.
Using a safety report for a quality complaint
Unwanted style, poor art direction, repetitive generated dialogue and performance problems belong in developer feedback unless they also involve a standards violation. Mislabeling ordinary criticism as abuse can obscure genuine safety cases.
Submitting evidence that exposes more people
Do not circulate intimate, hateful or personal material to prove that it exists. Provide the smallest contextual attachment the reporting interface accepts, redact unrelated information and describe the rest in text.
Assuming a report guarantees removal or a reply
Xbox’s aggregate automation statistics describe platform operations, not an individual promise. Enforcement depends on the item, evidence, applicable rule and review. Check any enforcement or case-review notice you receive, but do not assume every report will produce a direct response or appeal option.
