Report a fake LinkedIn or X profile through that platform’s impersonation route; report a deceptive email with your email provider’s phishing control. If the message claims to be from LinkedIn, you can also forward it to LinkedIn’s phishing address. Reporting can prompt review, but no platform guarantees that every report will result in removal.

Report an impersonating LinkedIn profile

  1. Open the suspicious member’s profile.
  2. Select More or the More icon, then choose Report / Block.
  3. Choose the option to report the member or the entire account.
  4. Select This person is impersonating someone and submit the report.

LinkedIn says the reported member will not be told who filed the report, and that it takes action when a profile violates its policies. See LinkedIn’s profile reporting instructions.

Impersonation warning signs can include a duplicate profile, requests for money or sensitive information, or attempts to move the conversation off LinkedIn. An incomplete profile by itself is not proof of impersonation.

Report an impersonating account on X

If you are the person being impersonated, or are authorized to represent them, submit an impersonation report through the X Help Center. If you are reporting someone else’s account, use the report option on that account’s profile. X says you do not need an X account to report impersonation.

X investigates valid reports. If it determines an account violates its misleading and deceptive identities policy, it may suspend the account or ask the account holder to change it. An impersonation report is separate from a verification request.

Report a phishing or impersonation email

Gmail

  1. Open the suspicious message.
  2. Select More, then Report phishing.

Google says a message manually reported as phishing, or moved to Spam, is copied along with its attachments and may be analyzed to help protect users. Read Google’s phishing-reporting guidance.

Outlook.com

  1. Select the suspicious message.
  2. Choose Report, then Report phishing.

Reporting a sender does not block future messages in Outlook.com; blocking is a separate action. See Microsoft’s Outlook.com reporting instructions.

Email pretending to be from LinkedIn

Forward the suspicious email to phishing@linkedin.com. For a suspected scam message received inside LinkedIn, open its More menu, select Report/Block, and choose the spam or scam option.

LinkedIn says authentic messages include a security footer with the recipient’s name and professional headline, but that detail alone does not prove a message is legitimate. Avoid its links and go directly to LinkedIn instead. See LinkedIn’s guidance on suspicious emails and messages.

What to include and what to do next

Keep your report factual: identify the account or message, say whose identity it claims to represent, and provide relevant context requested by the reporting form. Do not assume there is a fixed review deadline; LinkedIn and X do not give a general response-time guarantee in the cited reporting instructions.

  • Do not click links, open attachments, or enter credentials in a suspicious message.
  • Reach the service through its known app or by typing its official address yourself.
  • If you sent money or sensitive information, or someone accessed your account, report the incident to the platform and the appropriate authority in your country.

U.S. routes for scams and identity theft

These government options are for U.S. consumers, not universal reporting channels. The Federal Trade Commission recommends forwarding phishing emails to reportphishing@apwg.org and reporting scams at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. If someone stole personal information such as a Social Security number, bank account, or card number, use IdentityTheft.gov for a recovery plan. The FTC also advises organizations affected by spoofed business email to notify customers and report the scam. See the FTC’s phishing guidance.
